During these dark winter days, our God calls us here to
witness the example set by Jesus. Gathered as we are in
the warmth and light of this building, what do we do to
bring that warmth and light outside with us? Let us pray
today that we move beyond our daily drudgery
to mission, inspired by the energy of Jesus.

Dear Friends,
I am writing this after having participated in the celebration of First
Penance for our second grade students. They are so very precious
and were very well prepared to
meet Jesus in this great Sacrament of
mercy and healing. Thank you to
all those who help prepare them both through our
PREP program and Holy Cross Regional School.
Thank you to their parents who are sharing the gift
of Faith with them and helping them to respond to
the graces of the Holy Spirit at this time in their
lives. The celebration was originally scheduled for
January 24 but Mother Nature had other ideas.
The celebration on January 31 was very touching
and grace filled.
Our Scriptures this weekend help us to understand the great mystery of salvation which God
offers to us. We can easily relate to Job’s feelings
that life on earth can be a drudgery. We know
times of misery as well as troubled nights. But for
us who are disciples of Christ, our weakness is a
place for God’s grace. Jesus is the antidote to the
misery of life, to the weaknesses of human nature.
Without Him, we can do nothing. With Him,
nothing is impossible.
Jesus forgives, heals, drives out demons,
raises the dead to life! And He continues to do so,
for you and for me. He does this most frequently
in the Sacraments of Confession and Holy Communion. These two “building blocks” of the spiritual life are reassuring and infallible encounters
with the power of Christ and the mystery of redemption.
Who do we turn to when we are in need?
We can turn to a lot of different places and people.
But the only one who can truly set us free, answer
our questions, lift us from misery, fill us with hope,
enliven our lives with joy, satisfy our deepest longings and desires is Jesus of Nazareth, Son of God
and Son of Mary ~ the Christ, the Savior of the
world!
Let us turn to Him today and every day. Let
us search for Him because He searches for us. Let
us surrender to Him because He will give us everything we need and even more. But let us not forget
that He asks us to pick up the Cross behind Him
and with His help to carry it forward into the resurrection which is His and which He willingly
shares with us.
God bless you, God love you,
Our Lady of Lourdes
This week we will
commemorate the feast of Our
Lady of Lourdes. Our Lady’s
messages always seek to bring
us to her Son. Take time this
week to honor Our Lady by introducing
someone in your life to Jesus. The CDs,
books, and booklets in our display in the
narthex make it easy...just pick one, then
pass it on! Thank you for your generous
donations that help to
support the mission of

On behalf of Archbishop Chaput, we are sharing with
you a request from Bishop Francis Kalabat of the
Chaldean Diocese of Saint Thomas the Apostle to
broadly encourage prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary
for her intercession on behalf of persecuted Christians in the Middle East. We kindly ask that you consider sharing information about this initiative with
others, along with the prayer below. Individuals are
asked to say this prayer in conjunction with the
recitation of the Holy Rosary for the intention of the
persecuted.
Mother of God, Virgin Mary, be for us a safeguard from
all illnesses and hardships.
Through the great love you have for Christ, ask and
beseech Him to be merciful to us, to give healing to our
ailments,
to console the downtrodden, and to reunite those who
are scattered and to forgive us.

In order to help us prepare for the World Meeting of
Families and the anticipated visit from Pope Francis,
a catechism on family life entitled, Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive, has been prepared.
Each month, our parish will reflect on one chapter
from this catechism. You can order a copy of this
beautifully illustrated catechism and learn about the
World Meeting of Families at WorldMeeting2015.org.
Chapter 4: Two Become One Our first three
chapters reviewed basic Christian faith. We saw
how confidence in Jesus opens the door to faith,
enabling us to know God and what God has done
in history. God creates male and female in his
image, and makes a covenant with Israel and the
Church. God is faithful to his promises, even when
we sin. Because God loved us in this way, we
spend our lives trying to return our love to God and
share it with our neighbor. In this month’s chapter
and in the chapters to come, we will study the implications of these doctrines for marriage and the
family. When husband and wife promise to love
each other as God loves us all, they make a commitment to love not only romantically, but also with
mercy and forgiveness. Our culture sometimes
teaches us to think of marriage as a negotiable
contract between two individuals who happen to
feel sexual chemistry. This view of love is a recipe
for instability, since it is still premised on individualism and the waxing and waning of romantic feelings. The Church’s alternative account of love
enables us to transcend the culture of individualism
and become who we were created to be. Founded
on Christ, sustained in the sacraments, Catholic
marriage builds humility and self-sacrifice into the
dynamic between male and female. As this month’s
chapter explains in more detail, sacramental
marriage creates intimate communion even in
times of suffering and hardship. “Love is our
mission,” as our catechism’s title declares, because
Christ’s love frees us from false, shrunken
accounts of love and makes us fully alive.
Christopher C. Roberts, catechism editor Did you

everyone, whether you are married, single,
celibate, or consecrated! Talk topics include
marriage, parenting, grandparenting, celibacy,
dating, fostering vocations, family life and much
more. Visit the website for the list of speakers and

Consultation of the Clergy and Faithful for the
2015 Synod of Bishops in Rome
Pope Francis has called for an Ordinary Synod of
Bishops in October 2015 on the theme, The Vocation
and Mission of the Family in the Church and
Contemporary World. The General Secretary of the
Synod of Bishops, following a practice that typically
anticipates every Synod, invites consultation on this topic
to assist with its preparations. A Preparatory Document
has been issued by the Holy See to initiate this
consultation along with a series of questions. Archbishop
Chaput, in an effort to provide an opportunity for the clergy and faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to engage in this consultation in as wide a manner as
possible has authorized the use of this instrument for local
participation. The clergy and faithful are asked to read the
complete Preparatory Document, or its
summary, on
the archdiocesan website and then answer any or all of the
questions that follow by visiting www.archphila.org.

Paul and Karen Quinn
“Typical Foster Parents”
Working through Catholic Social Services (CSS) for
26 years, Paul and Karen Quinn have provided a
safe and loving home to more than 30 foster
children. They say “more than 30,” because the
truth is they’ve lost count.
Though most people would consider what they
do beyond extraordinary, Paul and Karen just
consider themselves typical foster parents. When
asked why they became foster parents, Paul
unselfconsciously responded, “The Holy Spirit.”
Their story is one of how God works his wonders in
mysterious ways. After repeated, unsuccessful
efforts to start their own family, Paul and Karen
came to terms with the fact that they were unable
to conceive. So they decided to adopt. But that
proved more difficult than they thought.
Then one Sunday, their church bulletin
changed their lives. They each saw the same CSS
item about foster care, but neither mentioned it for
a few days. Eventually, they started talking about
what a blessing it would be to have a child in the
house. They welcomed Jamie, four years old, into
foster care and, in time, were able to permanently
adopt her. Jamie is now 30, married, and a
graduate of the University of Scranton with a Master’s Degree in Medical Sciences from Arcadia
University.
Raising Jamie was such a wonderful experience, they opened their home up to more and more

foster children — again, more than 30 in all. They adopted four more of those and gained legal
custody of a sixth. So that now, in addition to Jamie, their extraordinary family includes Monika, 21, a
student at Delaware County Community College, Kristine, 21, a Junior at Neumann University,
Gregory, 20, a graduate of the Mapleton School and currently working, Teresa, 17, a senior at
Cardinal O’Hara High School, and Denzel, 13, a 7th-grader at St. Francis de Sales School. And the
foster children keep coming. The Quinns currently share their home with a tiny, six-week-old preemie,
who lights up their lives.
Tragically, there are many, many more children who need safe, loving homes. Your gift to the
2015 Catholic Charities Appeal can help provide the staff to supervise the visitations, help the
biological or soon-to-be adoptive parents and track each child’s well-being. And, maybe most
important, give them the resources to conduct the necessary background checks to find other, loving
foster families like the Quinns.

At the request of Archbishop Chaput, we are sharing information regarding the launch of a website
centered around the "Faith in the Public Square" colloquium held in Toronto this past August. The
series explored many of the challenging questions that pervade our society and included addresses on
the topic of how faith and society are understood today as well as a panel discussion on the future of
faith in the public square. In addition to Archbishop Chaput, keynote speakers included Cardinal
Thomas Collins, Archbishop of Toronto, and Dale Ahlquist, President of the American Chesterton Society. The

Lansdale, PA. The presentation begins at
7:30 PM in the lobby meeting room of
the parish meeting center.
This is an opportunity for individuals
to learn about the annulment process in
the Catholic Church and will include
time for questions and answers. In
addition, information pamphlets about
the annulment process, divorce, children
and Tribunal costs will be available at
the presentation. While open to everyone,
the presentation will be particularly
helpful for Catholics who are divorced,
and perhaps remarried, and for divorced
individuals beginning the RCIA.
Join Archbishop Charles Chaput, Jeff Cavins, Sarah
Christmyer and other Catholics from the Philadelphia
Community for REACH|philly, a New Evangelization
Prayer Breakfast. Gather in prayer and fellowship,
encounter Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, hear the
words of inspiration speakers, and learn how you can
live out the evangelical mission of the Church. Held
at Drexelbrook on Thursday, February 19, 2015 from
6:30–9:30am by FOCUS, the Fellowship of Catholic
University Students. For more information and to
register, please visit focus.org/reach.
IHM Discernment Retreat
February 13-15, 2015
Friday 6PM - Sunday 1PM
Villa Maria House of Studies
Young women (18-35) are invited to join us for this
retreat which focuses on the IHM Charism and the
importance of listening to God's call and
discovering the many ways that God speaks to
us. Time will be included for personal and
communal prayer as well as the opportunity to
interact with the sisters in formation. (Contact:
ihmvoc@aol.com or 610-889-1553)
Have you read Pope Francis’ Apostolic
Exhortation “The Joy of the Gospel”? Are
you inspired by the Pope’s dream for a
missionary transformation of the Church?
Come and meet others who share this
dream and want to implement the Pope’s vision.
Join us for five consecutive Saturday evenings
starting January 17th through February 14th, at the
Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, 1723
Race Street in Philadelphia after the 5:15 PM Mass.
We will present excerpts from Pope Francis’ “The Joy
of the Gospel.” The excerpts will be followed by a
panel discussion to explain the “New Evangelization”
and how families can put Pope Francis’ words into
action.
Hear priests, deacons, sisters and local educators
discuss how you can be part of the New Evangelization! See the poster in church for more details. Register today by e-mail at JoyoftheGospel@comcast.net
or call Michael Campbell at 215-407-7402.
Tweeted by Pope Francis on January 24:
Practicing charity is the best way to evangelize.
