Our super sexualized society has seen 100 million copies of E L James’ erotic novel sold worldwide—the movie trailer immediately became the most -viewed of the year. To put it starkly, what this book means to women roughly equates to what pornography on the internet has meant for men. There is nothing good about it. Women are devouring this story of hero Christian Grey “conquering” virgin Anastasia Steele. It exploits themes of bondage, dominance, sadism, masochism, controlling, punishing passion and explores in depth fantasies of erotica many have never dreamed of. But this is about violent sex, and when you connect physiological sexual arousal with violent experiences or even images, psychologists say that we establish neural pathways that want to be repeated. And this lays the foundation for sexual violence. It is frightening to observe how millions of women seem desirous of leaning into this. What has happened in our culture that a “sado-masochistic, non-committal, control freak,” who delights in physically abusing, demeaning, and emotionally abusing a naïve college girl, could become a literary figure so popular with so many women? This movie, these books represent a false and tarnished concept of love which reduces human beings to objects of fantasy simply to provide pleasure. When we buy into these notions we are ultimately left disillusioned, unhappy, lonely, confused, and denigrated. In a day when we are frantic over the safety of young college women, this book and movie are reckless, alarming. We entered into a holy time with the Holy Spirit and I experienced healing prayer. What joy it has been to be delivered from that which is not from God so that I can be under the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ. As a child, I was told I was perfect. That didn’t leave much room for error. In addition, I was falsely empowered to be responsible for the emotional well being of my family. This has been a heavy burden most of my life. As a result, I pursued counterfeit gods, including a performance-based life, workaholism and relationships that weren't life giving. I frequently felt like a dead woman walking. As a result of prayer and healing through this session, I continue to marvel at our Lord's goodness, love and grace and my new found freedom under His authority. I'm learning to become more dependent on Him. I’m eternally grateful to our Lord, as well as The Falls Church Anglican Healing Prayer Ministry which has been such a blessing to me. Others in my life have also begun to notice a difference as my fragmented self becomes more and more integrated. I'm noticing a difference too. Thank you! Thank you! Dan Marotta, Young Timothy, 8 am, Columbia Baptist Chapel The Rev. Bill Haley, 9 & 11 am, Bishop O’Connell High School SERMON SERIES: Whole Life Stewardship, Part II “Stewards of Our Story and Sin” ” Scripture Readings: 1 Timothy 1:12-17; John 4:16-30; Psalm 50:1-6 Saul was not a nice man…of his own witness throughout Acts and in his letters. 1 Tim 1:13-16: “...formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief,14 and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. “ But Paul was “grounded in gratitude for God’s grace.” 1 Tim 1:12,17: “I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service... 17 To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” Some stewardship lessons from the life of Paul: 1. It is never too late for God’s grace to change us, radically! 2. Don’t focus on your sin, but don’t forget it. 3. Our sin has a part to play in our life, our story, our spiritual formation, and our witness. 4. We can tell our conversion story with it being about God and not about us. 5. We can sing “Amazing Grace” like we mean it! Questions for Discussion: 1) What has God saved you from? Where would you be if God didn’t reach out to you? 2) How has your own sin taught you about grace? 3) What aspects of your story about God’s grace in your own life do you need to be a good steward of?
