Dear Parent/Guardian: Ohio House Bill 487 updated Ohio’s graduation requirements to ensure that all students are ready for success in college
and at work. As a result, the Class of 2017 (10th graders in the 2014-15 school year) will be the last students to take the
current Ohio Graduation Tests, and new test requirements take effect for students entering ninth grade in the 2014-15
school year (Class of 2018). A key component of the new graduation requirements is that students are required to take
Ohio’s new state tests which are computer based and will be given to students beginning February 17, 2015.
The Spring 2015 administration of the PARCC and AIR assessments includes two separate test administration windows:
the Performance-Based Assessment (PBA) and the End-of-Year (EOY). Beginning February 17, all 9th grade students
enrolled in English 9, Algebra I, or Geometry will be scheduled to take the PARCC assessment. Beginning March 2, all
9th and 12th grade students enrolled in Government will take the AIR assessment. All 10th grade students enrolled in U.S.
History will take the AIR assessment and all 9th grade students enrolled in physical science will take the AIR Assessment.
All 10th graders will take the Ohio Graduation Tests during the week of March 16 with OGT make-ups scheduled for the
week of March 23rd.
PARCC and AIR End-of-Year (EOY) assessments will begin the week of April 13 and will end on May 15, 2015.
Ohio’s new state testing windows are long and continuous during the months of February, March, April and May. We ask
that you familiarize yourself with your child’s testing schedule and make sure he/she is well prepared to take each
assessment. It is critical that our students report to school on time and are well rested for each day of testing. Our doors
open at 7:00 am, and breakfast is offered to all students. We also ask that all medical appointments be made after school
hours if at all possible. Following the requests listed above will assist in the reduction of stress and anxiety in preparation
for these new assessments.

REMINDER – TESTING BEGINS ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 17
VANGUARD/TECH CENTER
The Vanguard Tech Center is an excellent opportunity for students to explore careers. Sophomores can choose from
13 vocational laboratories and 5 technology focused laboratories at Vanguard Tech Center. Students at the Vanguard
Tech Center will spend half of their day in their lab and can choose to take their academic courses at the Vanguard
Tech Center or come back to Ross for those classes. Students in the 5 technology focused laboratories will also take at
least one Terra State Community College class each semester. Applications for the Vanguard Tech Center are due in
Ms. Blanton’s office by February 13. Students can pick up applications in the guidance office. Contact Ms. Blanton at

Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, February 12 from 3:15-6:45 pm and conferences will last
no longer than 20 minutes. Special invitations will be mailed to homes of select freshmen, encouraging parents to

conference. If you do not receive an invitation or a phone call and would like to make an appointment to meet with

WELCOME ACTING TRANSPORTATION MANAGER MARK ISAACS
Mark Isaacs will serve as the district’s Acting Transportation Manager and began working with the district
on January 1st. Mr. Isaacs will remain with the district until a permanent Transportation Manager has been
selected. Bill Burkett, the district’s former Transportation Manager, recently retired after twelve years in the
district. Fremont City Schools wishes Bill Burkett the best in his retirement and thanks him for his service to
the district!

You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown
Plan an evening or afternoon of fun with the Peanuts Gang! Ross High School students are now in rehearsal for the
musical production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown which will be staged March 20 and 21 at 7:00 p.m. and
March 22 at 2:30 p.m.
Though considered a "good man" by his friends, Charlie Brown can't seem to win the heart of the Little RedHaired Girl, nor can his friend Lucy win her crush, the piano-playing Schroeder. Meanwhile, Snoopy and Linus
daydream, and the rest of the friends battle with kites, school, baseball and misunderstandings before finally
coming to realize what makes them truly happy. Musical numbers include My Blanket and Me, The Kite, The
Baseball Game, Suppertime and Happiness. Join your favorite Peanuts characters in this fast-paced, lighthearted
musical that will please audiences of all ages!

“The Fremont City Board of Education has adopted policies and procedures permitting students to attend a school,
within our school district, other than the school in which the students and parents reside.
Applications for the 2015-16 school year will be taken beginning March 1st and continue through March 31st .
Applications and copies of policies and procedures may be obtained by contacting the principal of your school of
choice beginning March 1, 2015, or downloaded from the district website at www.fremontschools.net, click on
Student Registration.
Inter-district applications are for students who do not reside in the Fremont City Schools District but would like to
attend Fremont City Schools.
Intra-district applications (elementary only) are for students who reside within Fremont City Schools District and
would like to attend an elementary school of their choosing.

On February 17th, the Ross and FMS Orchestras will perform their Orchestra Night #2 concert in the Ross Little Theatre at 7:00
pm. The snow date for this event is February 19th, same time, same place. This is the Ross Orchestra's pre Northwest Ohio State
Orchestra Adjudicated Event to be held on February 20th/21st at Bowling Green Middle School. The Fremont community and
Ross/FMS staff are invited to attend both of these events. See you at the concert!

TEST STRESS?
STUDENT WELLNESS GOALS:
Stressing out about upcoming tests? Here are some tips to help calm your nerves!
Show up on time and ready to go. Students may be more stressed if they are
running late and feeling rushed. It is helpful to set your alarm, get moving in the morning and get
to school on time. This will help students be ready when the test administrator says, “BEGIN”.
Stay focused and relaxed. Once the testing session starts, take a deep breath and relax! Some
testing sessions will feel long and never ending but it is important to stay focused during the test.
It may be helpful to have an anchor that refocuses you during the testing, like every test item that
ends in a zero. When you come to item #10, #20, #30 etc., stop and take a breath, relax and
refocus.

Understand the time constraints placed on tests, but use the time allotted. It is important that students balance between taking their time
on the test and using all the time available to complete the test. To reduce stress during testing, know ahead of time how long your testing
session will last.
Get physical! A great way to de-stress before and after the testing session is to get physical. Go outside and take a walk, stop in the gym and
shoot some baskets or enjoy some good old fashioned fun like jumping rope.
WHAT IS INFLUENZA?
Influenza (commonly known as the flu) is a serious
respiratory infection that is caused by the influenza virus. The
flu is spread easily through coughing, sneezing or through
touching contaminated surfaces or objects like unwashed
hands, toys and eating utensils.
Flu activity is high across most of the country with elevated
flu illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths. Flu season will
probably continue for several weeks. While the flu vaccine is
not working as well as usual against some H3N2 viruses,
vaccinations can still provide some protection and reduce
hospitalizations and deaths, and will protect against other flu
viruses. Influenza antiviral drugs can treat flu illness. CDC
recommends these drugs be used to treat people who are very
sick or who have flu symptoms and are at high risk of serious
flu complications. Early antiviral treatment works best.

Keep your child home from school until their temperature has been normal for 24 hours. Remind your child to cover
their mouth when coughing or sneezing to protect others and to wash their hands frequently to protect themselves!

KNOW ! TO BE P ART OF THE SOLUTION-RX DRUG ABUSE PREVENTION
With ONE in FOUR youth having misused or abused prescription drugs, the need for parents, teachers and community leaders to take
immediate preventative action is without question. There are several key steps that can be taken in your home and with your children to
make a community-wide impact.
Monitor, Secure and Dispose - Vital steps in preventing prescription drug abuse among youth.
• Make note of how many pills are in each medicine bottle; keep track of refills and be sure you control any
medication that has been prescribed to your child.
• Lock up your medications in a safe or locked cabinet or drawer.
• Take advantage of community drop boxes or drug take-back days for your unused, expired or unwanted
prescription medications.
• To properly discard prescription drugs in household trash, remove medicine from original container, mix
with undesirable substance such as coffee grounds or kitty litter and place in a disposal plastic bag or other sealed container. Before
placing in the trash, be sure to conceal or remove any personal information on the medicine bottle.
Talk with your children regularly about the dangers of prescription drug abuse.
Dispel the myth that prescription drugs are safer than illicit drugs – they’re not! Help children understand that even when taken as
prescribed, there are health risks associated with prescription medications. When taken in an unintended manner, by an unintended user,
that risk increases even further – with potentially fatal consequences.
Advocate for the lowest dosage of a drug, to relieve pain for example, when being prescribed a medication for yourself or your child.
Role model appropriate behavioral choices by using your prescribed medications only as directed and not sharing them with family or
friends for any reason.
Help spread the word - This is when sharing is caring! Share this information with family and friends and consider making a brief
presentation to your local PTA, civic association or other group to bring about awareness on this issue. You can visit

word.
Teen drug abuse is an epidemic; one that needs to be stopped in its tracks. As parents, teachers and other caring adults, we must do what
we can to be a part of the solution. We must reduce access and availability of prescription drugs in our homes and educate ourselves, our
children and our community about the potentially dangerous and deadly consequences of prescription misuse and abuse. We also need to
help our children understand how appropriate use of medications can be beneficial in helping people live longer, healthier lives. The best
way to teach that is by our own example.
FEBRUARY LOVES PANCAKES
February is National Pancake Month! Celebrate with pancakes for
breakfast, lunch or dinner. It’s as easy as 1-2-3 when you whip up this
homemade pancake mix.
Whisk together 2 cups whole-wheat flour, 3 cups all-purpose flour, 1
1/4 cup powdered milk, 1/4 cup sugar, 2 tbsp. baking powder and 1
tbsp. salt. Store in an air-tight container for up to 3 months.
When you’re ready to make pancakes, combine 1 1/2 cups of the mix
with 1 cup water, 2 tbsp. canola oil and 1 egg. If desired, add a mashed
banana or a handful of fresh or frozen blueberries. Drop by large
spoonfuls onto a hot pan, flip when bubbles form and cook until
browned on both sides. Top with sliced fruit or berries, jam or a little
syrup. Serve warm or place cooked pancakes in a freezer bag and reheat
in a toaster oven or microwave. Pancakes freeze beautifully!
Students can anonymously report incidents of other
students participating in risky/dangerous behaviors or
illegal activities, such as bullying, child abuse, assaults,
cutting, dating violence, eating disorders, suicidal threats,
fights, weapons, underage drinking, planned parties,
alcohol/drug/tobacco use, etc.
