What’s Your Source of Strength?
Who do you turn to when you are under pressure or stress? Do you find strength in
your family? Mentors? Positive friends? Spirituality? Northwestern along with our
cluster schools is implementing a project called “Sources of Strength.” One of the
primary goals is to increase connectedness between student to student peers and
caring, trusted adults. All of our staff participated in an interactive training this week
about the purpose and goals of this project. For more information about the program, please go to: www.sourcesofstrength.org. We are looking for any parents
who are willing to be adult advisors for our Sources of Strength project. The time
commitment would be about once a month. Please e-mail Janette Hinton at hintonj@fultonschools.org if you would like to be a part of this much needed project!

“Stranger Danger”
Our middle school students are still young enough that they need those conversations to continue at home about strangers. Please remind your children about what
they should do if a stranger approaches them. The websites below may provide
some helpful information as you have those talks.

Recess During PRIDE
Our PRIDE/Recess committee has unanimously decided to incorporate recess during PRIDE for the 2015/2016 school year. We are currently working on revising our
bell schedule to reflect this change. Once our staff votes on the bell schedule, the
final version will be shared with our community. Our next few meetings will now
discuss the actual PRIDE curriculum, in addition to whether or not our PRIDE classes should be gender based. Admin has shared the potential benefits of having
PRIDE classes be either all girls or all boys to allow for more open and honest discussion to take place during those advisement classes. Feel free to provide your
feedback at northwesternms@fultonschools.org and write PRIDE Gender Classes
in the subject line.

The Chorus Cluster Concert
This week your children received results from report cards, ITBS scores for 8th graders, and Georgia Student Growth Model Reports. If your child
did not receive a Georgia Student Growth Model
Report, it may be due not testing on CRCT consistently in the past 2-3 years as there would not
be enough information to show accurate
growth. If you have any questions regarding the
Georgia Student Growth Model Reports, please
contact Janette Hinton
at hintonj@fultonschools.org
with Northwestern MS, Elkins Pointe
MS, Milton HS, Crabapple Crossing
ES, Birmingham Falls ES, Alpharetta
ES and Summit Hill ES will take place
Tuesday evening, January 20 at
6:30pm. You will get to hear each
group perform including our own 8th
grade chorus.
Come on out and support the cluster
as we demonstrate what fine singers
we have!
Committed to challenging our students to strive to their full potential for academic excellence and personal growth.

News from Fulton County Schools
FCS Choice Options
During the last week of January and in conjunction with National School Choice Week, Fulton County
Schools (FCS) will host forums to gather input on what families’ value most in educational options for their
children.
Currently, FCS offers limited educational choice options to families through magnet programs, charter
schools, open enrollment, and family and employee hardship considerations. Additionally, over the past two
years, elected parents, teachers and community members on School Governance Councils (SGC) have
been customizing certain aspects of individual school programming to meet students’ needs.
FCS recently launched the Choice Options initiative to thoughtfully expand educational choices for parents
as part of the Building Our Future 2017 Strategic Plan. This work is the natural evolution of the charter system and is focused on improving student achievement by providing an educational experience customized
to the unique needs of our students and communities. The initiative will also provide equitable access to
educational options across FCS while efficiently using the district’s facilities and resources. The first phase
of this initiative is focused on identifying and understanding our communities’ needs for expanded education options.
FCS will gather input regarding education choice options during the following forums:
January 26, 2015, 7:00pm at Westlake HS
January 27, 2015, 7:00pm at Lake Forest ES
January 28, 2015, 7:00pm at Centennial HS
January 29, 2015, 7:00pm at Tri-Cities HS
February 2, 2015, 7:00pm at Milton Center
The information gathered during these forums will be used to help create the building blocks for expanded
choice options which will be implemented over the coming years. We will ensure any new options will not
replace the good work of the SGCs, but will supplement it.
For those parents unable to attend, there will be opportunities to provide input via the Choice Options Website.
