About Us
Background
New Zealand Institute of Sport
Be part of the growing Sports Industry
Welcome, Kia ora, Talofa lava, Malo e le lei,
Bula vanaka!
The New Zealand Institute of Sport (NZIS) was
established in 1996 to provide tertiary level
education for those interested in a career in the
sport, fitness, recreation, health and hospitality
industries.
NZIS strives to provide an environment where
students are challenged to meet industry
requirements and learn the skills that employers
are looking for through its high quality academic
programmes.
The educational and academic focus at NZIS is
centered around its popular first and second year
tertiary programmes at Level 5 and 6 on the
New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)
framework.
NZIS has also been active in developing niche
programmes that complement the main tertiary
sport qualifications on offer.
These include foundation sport programmes and
industry-based programmes such as Personal
Training and Pre Police Proficiency.
These programmes can also act as a pathway
to higher level qualifications. Students are
supported with the necessary tools to enhance
their own sporting performance.

Why New Zealand?
New Zealand, famous for its amazing
scenery, is a great country - a fun place
to visit and a superb study destination.
New Zealand’s landmass has approximately
the same area as Japan or Great Britain. The
countryside is unique and quite spectacular, with
rolling green hills, golden sand beaches and lush
rainforests, all within a few hours drive of each
other. New Zealand has just over four million
people, known affectionately as ‘Kiwis’, who
are easy-going, warm and welcoming to their
neighbours and to those who travel to experience
all that is New Zealand. Kiwis travel overseas a
lot and this means they are well versed in a range
of cultures. New Zealand itself is a multi-cultural
nation, with a fusion of Maori, Pacific Island,
European and Asian people combining to make
a vibrant and colourful society.
The climate in New Zealand is temperate, with
relatively mild, wet winters with temperatures
between 10 and 15ºC, and warm, dry summers
where temperatures range from 20 to 30ºC.
The summer months are December, January and
February, and the winter months are June, July
and August.
New Zealand also has an international
reputation as a provider of quality
education.
New Zealand offers a safe learning environment
which provides excellent study opportunities
and support services for international students.
Programmes are available for academic,
professional and vocational studies at universities,
polytechnics, private training establishments and
schools. Campuses are highly international, with
students from all corners of the globe studying
and socialising together. Students come from
Europe, South East Asia, the UK, North Asia,
North and South America, India, and Australia,
amongst many other countries. New Zealand
offers a progressive education to help students
take a leading place in the exciting global
environment.

Camp Week
During first term, camp week is a highlight, where
students are taken out of their comfort zone in a
challenging outdoor environment. Team cohesion
needs to be developed and this sets the scene for
the year.
Sports Exchange
Each year, students compete between campuses
in a variety of sports, including rugby, netball,
volleyball, indoor cricket, soccer, golf and
athletics. Students from all three campuses go
to Wellington for a week to participate in this
exciting competition. The Sports Exchange is
all about fun, social interaction and healthy
competition and the Sports Exchange is fiercely
contested. The games are played over three days
and include a function for staff and students.
There is a prize-giving for The Most Valuable
Players on the last day and the winning NZIS
campus is announced.
Sporting Academies
The NZIS Sporting Academies and Sports Teams
With a view to providing more opportunities and pathways for its students, NZIS has developed
sporting academies and sports teams at all three sites in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch. The
NZIS Sporting Academies are high-performance, targeted centres of excellence that help outstanding
athletes to reach their full potential. Attendance and completion of NZIS educational requirements are
paramount for selection into the Academies.
NZIS Rugby Academy - Auckland and Wellington
The NZIS Rugby Academy is designed to maximise success for students looking to continue to higher
levels in rugby and education. NZIS has identified the need for potential professional players to have
another pathway to achieve success, if they have not already been identified by provincial unions
for development. This academy will provide a vehicle for young talent to upskill themselves in rugby
specifics that he or she has not yet experienced.
NZIS Volleyball Academy - Wellington
The NZIS Volleyball Academy has been extremely successful over the past 15 years, competing in local
and regional volleyball league competitions. The NZIS Volleyball Academy held the title of national
champions in 2007. The academy allows young players from NZIS to play alongside experienced NZIS
and national team players.
NZIS Basketball Academy - Wellington
NZIS has successfully launched its high performance basketball academy in Wellington, run by head
coach and academy manager Natu Taufale. Natu won numerous NBL titles as a player, as well as
coaching with great success at the highest level in NZ basketball. Since the inception of the academy,
both the mens’ and womens’ teams have made the play-offs every year.
