Church Regulations Regarding Fast and Abstinence
Abstinence from meat (beast or fowl) is to be observed by all Catholics fourteen years
old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. This obligation prohibits
the eating of meat, but not eggs, milk products, or condiments of any kind, even though
made from animal fat.
Fasting means limiting oneself to one full meal on a given fast day. Catholics who are
eighteen years of age but not yet fifty-nine are obligated to fast on Ash Wednesday and
Good Friday. On fast days, two additional smaller meals are permitted if necessary to
maintain strength. However, the two smaller meals together may not equal one full meal.
Moreover, eating solid foods between meals on fast days is not permitted.

SENIOR GATHERING
Come and join in our monthly meeting: bring your
lunch at 12:00 and enjoy time together with your
friends. At 12:30 Barbara Maran, our parishioner will
be speaking about her ministry at Saint John’s in
Newark. Our parish assists Barbara with many
material items during the year, some of our members
assist at Saint John’s directly, and we provide the
meatloaves once a month. That is just a piece of
Barbara’s ministry. So many more services have been
added to assist men, women and children. Come and
hear about what your contributions mean to Saint
John’s and how Barbara uses every available resource:
A worthwhile program!
February 15, 2015
Dear Parishioners,
Believe it or not this coming week is Ash
Wednesday—February 18, 2015! It seems
that the Christmas Season was just coming to an end.
Of course Ash Wednesday means Lent 2015 will be
upon us. In Lent much is said about fasting, giving up,
and abstaining from certain foods. But Lent can also
be about fasting from certain attitudes and
characteristics that creep into our hearts and minds.
Perhaps the reflection listed below might help us to see
our Lenten practices in a new light:
FAST from self-concern and FEAST on
compassion for others.
FAST from discouragement and FEAST on hope.
FAST from lethargy and FEAST on enthusiasm.
FAST from suspicion and FEAST on truth.
FAST from thoughts that weaken and FEAST on
promises that inspire.
FAST from shadows of sorrow and FEAST on the
sunlight of serenity.
FAST from idle gossip and FEAST on purposeful
silence.
FAST from problems that overwhelm and FEAST
on prayer that sustains.
FAST from criticism and FEAST on praise.
FAST from self-pity and FEAST on joy.
FAST from ill-temper and FEAST on peace.
FAST from resentment and FEAST on
contentment.
FAST from jealousy and FEAST on love.
FAST from pride and FEAST on humility.
and finally,
FAST from selfishness and FEAST on service.
Let us pray for each other during this coming
Lenten Season.
Peace,
Sister Alice
Saint Aloysius Parish Lenten Soup Suppers
During the season of Lent you
are invited to enjoy a Soup
Supper on February 27, March 6
& March 13. It is an evening for
the whole family to share a
Lenten meal with other
parishioners and families. We
will begin with prayer at 5:45 (right after the 5:15
Lenten Mass). Soup will be served immediately
following the opening prayer. Our meal is shared in
the parish gym/auditorium. A free willing offering/
donations will be sent to various organizations.
The menu will include three kinds of homemade
meatless soups, fresh bread and crackers, beverages
and cookies. In order to prepare for the event we will
need to know the number of persons attending.
Please complete and return the tear off below to the
Rectory or Parish Center and indicate the evenings
you will attend and the number of children and adults.
Please put Lenten Soup Suppers on the return
envelope.
