Ways to develop independence in kids
If you are anxious about your child’s safety and tend to be more protective than
you want, start creating easy versions of independent living skills, so that kids can
learn to stand on their own two feet rather than be dependent on you.
A major challenge for parents is to find ways of safely moving children from being reliant
on adults to a position of independence. This can be tough because your natural instincts
are to nurture them.
Training for independence starts at a young age and continues into adolescence and
beyond. Developing independence is one of the best ways to promote self-confidence.
When you teach children to do jobs for themselves, you send a powerful message that you
believe that they are capable. Your actions speak louder than words.
One way of making it easier for children to learn the skills of independence is to create a
junior version of whatever skills you are trying to teach. So as effective parents, create
experiences that help your children to develop the skills of self-sufficiency and
independence from an early age.
Here are some examples:
Encourage your junior primary child to make a snack, prepare breakfast or perhaps
help prepare a meal. This is a junior version of cooking an evening meal.
Walk your child to the door of the classroom and let them take their bag into class
and unpack their belongings.
Drive your children to school most of the way and then let them walk the rest.
That is a junior version of walking to school.
Let an early teen go to a local cinema with friends. This is a junior version of going
out without adult supervision.
If you are anxious about your child’s safety and tend to be more protective than you want,
start creating junior versions of independent living, so that children can learn to stand on
their own two feet rather than be dependent on you. Remember, REDUNDANCY is your
aim as a parent!
Similarly, one way for kids to develop self-help skills is to create junior versions of what you
already do, so they can develop the skill-sets needed to look after themselves and help out
the rest of the family.

The reception to year 3 teachers are trying this on Thursday of this week. They are
celebrating Independence Day and creating the situation that encourages the children to
develop and display the skills they have as independent learners. We thank parents for
their support of this day and we are confident that you will see your child succeed at
organising themselves and preparing for the start of the new school day.
Kind regards, Rae, Paul, Anthony, Mike and Bobbie

hub of learning in the school and also to the ongoing
maintenance of programs across the school.

MATERIALS & SERVICES
CHARGES FOR 2015
A reminder that cash payment for your child’s fees
can be paid at the payment window between the
hours of 8.30am & 9.30am each morning. Thank
you to all of the parents who have already paid their
School Fees.
Payments can be made by cash, cheque or card,
however the time frame for paying by cash is limited
to this time so that the banking is ready by 10.30am.
Arrangements can be made to pay your fees in
instalments. There is an agreement form available
which you will need to fill in and sign. These
instalment payments are due in March, June and
September. Alternatively you may wish make the
payments over a different timeframe and this can
also be negotiated.
A direct debit facility is available to parents as per
DECD recommendations for parents who are
unable to get into the school to pay. To do this
parents will need to complete an agreement for the
school to deduct from their debit/credit card an
agreed amount each week, fortnight or month until
the fees are paid. This can be done for all forms of
payments providing that the total is over $20.00.
This form is found on the school’s web page or it
can be emailed to you on request. The form can
then be completed and returned to the school via
email.
Payments can also be made by phone using a
debit/credit card at any time during the day. Please
just call the school on 8295 3943.
EXCURSIONS AND OTHER PAYMENTS
All cash payments including excursions, camps,
OSHC and uniforms can be made at the same time,
8.30am – 9.30am. We accept cheque, cash or
card. Due to the high cost of bank charges for
each transaction we ask that all card payments
made are over $20. To do this you may wish to
incorporate more than one invoice for payments, ie
OSHC and excursions or School Fees and
excursions. These payments can also be made by
phone or via email as described above.
We are also fortunate that we have several money
machines located in close vicinity to the school for
parents to access cash from their accounts. These
are located at the BP service station, the Glenelg
Club and the Holdfast Hotel.

A thought from Joanne,
Your Pastoral Care Worker.
Wow… the start of a new school year with so many
exciting and challenging times ahead. How will this
year be different from last year and how will it be the
same? What goals are you aiming for this year?
Some handy hints to goal setting can be found here:
http://au.reachout.com/how-to-set-goals ...including
start with things you enjoy, don’t get too caught up
in “big’ things and think about what you don’t want
and turn them around into goals. Eg. “I don’t want to
be stuck at home” into “I want to travel”.
Achieving goals is such a great feeling. When you
have a plan on how to get there you are so much
more likely to be successful. So, identify the goal,
make a plan, see if it is working and take action.
Good Luck with goal setting and achieving this year.

Year 7 Leadership Day
Last Friday all the Year 7’s spent the day at the
Glenelg Cricket Club for a leadership conference. It
taught us lots of leadership skills which will help us
all in leading the school to success. We all
participated in group activities which helped
improved our skills as a team. We also learnt about
leaders in and around the community who have
shown good leaderships skills. During this day we
learnt lots of skills and shared ideas. As Year 7s we
now feel more confident in leading the school after
this amazing day. We would like to thank all of the
Leadership Team and Staff for making this day
possible.
