Donkey Basketball Feb. 20 Spring means lots of things and locally it means FFA Donkey Basketball. This year the FFA fundraiser will be held on Friday, Feb. 20 at the high school gym. It’s always a lot of family fun and is one of the fundraisers of the local Future Farmers of American chapter. Money raised helps fund members to go to leadership events, other FFA activities during the year and helps with the students fair projects. Ag Instructor Becky Carollo explained that teams will consist of five players, where four ride the donkeys and one stays on the floor. There are lots of rules, some not followed too well, like having to be seated on your…donkey to shoot a basket. Doors will open at 6:30 with game time at 7 pm. Ticket prices now are: Adults: $8, Student (7-12) $6, Child (K-6) $4. At the door all tickets are one dollar more. The FFA is still looking for businesses that would like to provide a team of 8-10 people. If you want to form a team, contact Becky at (509)521-0208 or email at rcarollo@wsd73.wednet.edu. Soccer Spaghetti Feb. 21 The boys soccer team is holding a fundraiser to earn money for their annual trip to the West side on March 13 to visit Seattle University and play soccer against Seattle Academy and University Prep colleges. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students with ASB cards and $5 for kids 12 and under. If you can’t make the dinner, donations are also accepted. Contact Coach Arthur de Victoria or Malisa Fox for more information. And details on the trip will be given out at the dinner. The dinner will be served by the boys soccer team. And it really doesn’t matter one whit. Here’s the short version of what happened. Keith, one of the few times in his life, decided to surprise me with a romantic VD getaway. It fell apart royally. He made reservations at a nice hotel in Richland and had dinner reservations all setup for Anthony’s. He had even researched and made a file of antique shops, art galleries, second hand stores, museums and walking trails. He brought the multi-page file folder with him and was going to then take me to some of these spots. He told me to pack a bag and we headed out, me having no idea what was in store. I had noticed that he was kind of quiet and kind of snuffling. We got to the hotel. It was under construction, which he didn’t know. Seriously. There was a construction paper pathway (not a yellow brick road) leading to our room, we visited with the sheet rockers in the lobby while they worked and we dodged large stacks of tile. Nice. We get to the room, he fell asleep. I woke him up after I watched some TV. He fell asleep. We went for a short walk, he fell asleep. He had come down with a whopping cold. We cancelled dinner reservations, ordered in Thai food, and fell asleep. I packed up the next morning, Saturday, and drove him home where he slept the rest of the weekend. My present was a small bag of Tim’s Jalapeno Chips and some Jelly Bellies. I went for a walk at the river and ate them by myself. He was still asleep. The whole thing was anything but romantic and I spent the weekend checking on him, working outside and being alone. The moral here: So what? We’ve been married 40-plus years and it sure ain’t happily ever after. Sometimes it’s happy and sometimes you wish you were in the hereafter, not here. Love isn’t about some goofy day. It’s thinking more about them than yourself. It’s shutting your mouth when you want to mouth off. It’s picking up the dirty socks for the hundredth time and being happy you have someone’s socks to pick up. It’s making a commitment to everyday life with the same person and praying it will last forever and ever. Warrior Do you have fluorescent lights that you need to recycle? And why is teacher Irene Longmire adding another one? Denise, right, had to get a quick repair from teacher Irene Longmire before a 100-school-day photo was taken on Feb. 4. Denise had to have a few more Bandaids applied to her face as some of her 100 items had fallen off. Irene’s second graders at Saddle Mountain Elementary were just one of the classes who celebrated the 100th day of school. Students and staff often dress up with 100 objects or dress up like they are 100 and teachers take advantage of time to teach all things 100. The second grade students were very enthusiastic when this reporter came to take their photo as they celebrated the 100th day of school at Saddle Mountain Elementary. To be fair, the students gathered for this photo, but having their photo taken wasn’t what they were so happy about. It was because they spotted one of their favorite people, Mrs. Longmire’s husband, Victor, as he came into the room. joyce edie photos City of Mattawa looking for scholarship applicants City of Mattawa is now accepting applications for the Association of Washington Cities Center for Quality Communities Scholarship fund. Submit information to theman@ smwireless.net Begin early for healthy teeth for a lifetime Submitted by CBHA The American Dental Association sponsors National Children’s Dental Month every February to raise awareness about the importance of oral health in children. Dr. Alvin Thien, director of Columbia Basin Health Association’s dental clinics, agrees. “Children sometimes end up in hospital emergency rooms with bad tooth aches,” he said. “Regular dental care prevents this type of serious problem.” Dr. Thien said dental visits usually start after a baby has received a tooth or two – usually between six and 12 months. Regular dental appointments should occur after the first visit. “If you suspect your child has dental problems, take the child to see a dentist as soon as possible,” he concluded. “We always leave room in our schedules for emergencies.” Tooth decay often starts in infancy if babies are put to bed for a nap or a night’s sleep with a bottle of milk, formula or sweetened liquid. Babies should not be put to bed with a bottle. Dr. Thien said the sugars in these liquids are used as an energy source by the bacteria in plaque, the thin film of bacteria and byproducts that constantly forms on the teeth. “The bacteria produce acids that attack tooth enamel.” This condition is called baby bottle tooth decay which occurs when a child’s teeth is frequently exposed for long periods of time to liquids containing sugars – most notably milk. wa S a h t t a M 932-4327 ell We have hot food, cold drinks and friendly service!
