2015 Issue 1 - Department of Education Schools Websites

20th February 2015

Dear Community,
Welcome to Queechy High School, 2015! Whether you are a first-time, or a returning parent, I expect you have a
sense of the words, the thinking, the vision that guides our every decision and action....
Quality, Harmony, Success...they greet you on the gate, on our flags and are enacted in all we do. Last year we spent
much time focussing particularly on Quality as in quality teaching and learning and Harmony, that is
collaborative, attuned, respectful relationships. This year we are sharpening our idea of Success - what do we
have to do to ensure every student is successful in exceeding their potential, achieving more than anyone would
expect? We are determined that SUCCESS will be the word that best describes 2015 - together, students,
parents and teachers, will clarify what this means, what it will require and how we'll know when we've achieved it.
On Wednesday we held the annual Student Leadership Board and Peer Support Induction Assembly. This is always
a highlight of the beginning of the year, and 2015 was no different.
Nathan Woodland,
Co-President 2011, was our guest speaker, helping all make connections between opportunities and
aspirations in secondary school to a successful life beyond. Students recognised at the assembly were:
Our Student Leadership Board is:
Eliza Behlau, Samuel Belbin, Jackson Bowen, Sophie Broadhurst, Kelsey De Ruyter, Brad Dodds, Olivia Freeman,
Lochie Geard, Maddison Harris, Justin Heazlewood, Brooke Hibbs, Jalen King, Rebekah Lanham, Sophie McEwen,
George Preece, Alex Pugh-Harris, Charles Russell, Lukas Souter, Keisha Thomas, Sam Tiffin, Karlton Wadley,
Dahlia Westergreen, Madeline Whitney, Amelia Williams and Darcy Wilson.
Our Peer Support students are:
Summer Aust, Bradley Bale, Alec Bowditch, Emily Burr, Ryan Cawthorn, Tyler De Ruyter, Cameron Duffy,
Ciarra Dundas, Ebony Faulkner, Ebony Flood, Chloe Fraser, Madeline Gardiner-Taylor, Amanda Gentle,
Jessica Griggs, Megan Hancock, Adam Harvey, Paige Harvey, Joshua Hedley Williams, Loclin Hemsley, Liana House,
Lara Howard, Perri Martin-Doolan, Paige Ockerby, Caitlin Quinn, Popi Tamblyn, Georgie Vodak, Danielle Walters,
Rhianna White and John (Phil) Williams.
At Queechy we are ever vigilant for learning that will stretch and satisfy our students and, where
possible, provide a point of difference to other schools.
This year we have introduced a few new
courses and ways of working - a notable addition is the girls' football class, we believe a first in any
Australian school. Planned and taught by the highly skilled Adam Davey we are excited about the
opportunities it provides now and the pathway it potentially delivers, recreationally and/or professionally for a few
students who continue playing in the future.
Thank you all those parents who were able to join us for our “meet and greet” last week. The School Association,
an energetic and committed group, provided the barbecue, the weather was much better than in 2014 and all
teaching staff stayed to foster working partnerships with their students and families. Queechy High School is not
just a set of classrooms, a diverse timetable or a number of lessons – it is a community, and we are happy to have
you join us. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, issues or concerns.

First Aid and Medical
Information
First aid and medical conditions are a huge task and responsibility given the number of
students enrolled at Queechy High School. We have three first aid officers:
Michelle Kremerskothen, Shirley Robottom and Maxine Doran they are based in the Central
Administration Block.
We have received medical information from some families. Please contact the school if you wish to
update your child’s records with any medical information. If you wish your child to receive
medication at school a form MUST be signed by your doctor for both prescription and
non-prescription medication, e.g. hay fever medication, paracetamol etc. Forms are available from
the school.
The school does not have on hand, or supply, paracetamol/analgesics or over-the-counter
medication.
Non-prescribed Medication
Non-prescribed oral medication (such as analgesics and over-the-counter medication) should not be
administered by teachers or other members of the school staff or be in student’s school bags or
lockers.
Headache, fever, earache, toothache are considered symptoms of conditions that require further
investigation by the appropriate health practitioner. It is not recommended that school staff
administer paracetamol or analgesics to students experiencing these symptoms. (taken from the
Department of Education Administration of Medication guidelines)
MAILING OF INVOICES/STATEMENTS
All statements/invoices are mailed out from our central office. This also applies
to families who have set up an instalment plan with the school earlier in the year.
Receipts will be posted to those families who have opted to have payments
made by credit card. Credit card payments are deducted from your account on
the 20th of each month or the first business day after the 20th.

2015 is shaping as an exciting year for the Health and Physical Education Department. We are thrilled to welcome back
Adam Davey and Brendan Poke back from their extended holidays, we were excited to learn Luke Tepper has
returned and we welcome Ben Van Est and Nigel Bent to our department. We are delighted that our Grade 9 and 10
students will now join our Grade 7 and 8 students in having two lessons a week as we implement the Australian
Curriculum for HPE here at Queechy. We have enjoyed welcoming an energetic Grade 7 group along with our returning
grades who have made a fantastic start to the year.
We are delighted to have many new option subjects linked to our department, including:
 Girls AFL Football Athlete Development Program with Premiership coach Mr Davey
 Two Sport Science classes (Grade 9 and Grade 10) with Mr Smith and Mr Turale
 Mr Bent is running an exciting new option in Adventure Education
 First Aid and Bronze Medallion with the guru Mr Poke
 Sports Competitions with Mrs Otley
This week we are lucky to welcome Sam Cotton from Cricket Tasmania who along with Mr Lee's and Mrs Farrell's Sports
Leaders will be running a cricket afternoon for our Grade 8 girls. We are busy preparing for upcoming NHSSA sports
rosters including Grade 10 Thursday Afternoon Basketball and Wednesday Afternoon 20/20 Cricket. Students who are
interested in any of these activities should see a staff member in the Gym during a break time.
We have a fantastic group of House Captains this year who are on duty for students to borrow sports gear at the start of
lunch breaks and they will also be running lunch time activities, including the famous staff vs. students matches across
various sports.
Our Swimming Carnival is to held on Tuesday the 17th of March at the Launceston Aquatic Centre, where parents are
more than welcome to attend. The key focus for the carnival is participation and enjoyment with a wide range of
activities to offer something for everyone. From many competitive swimming events, novelty events, the water slide
and time as a grade in the outdoor pool, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Parents, students and members of the Queechy community are invited to contact our Head of Subject Mr Clint Bolton
(Famous for once captaining Ricky Ponting!) or any member of the HPE team if you have any questions at all.

GIRLS AFL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
The popularity and ability of Queechy High School’s girls ability to play footy has never been
questioned, especially on the back of our four year unbeaten run which includes back to back
premierships in the first two Northern High School Girls Footy Gala days.
This success, along with a desire to improve and explore future AFL pathways has culminated
into Australia’s first ever Girls Footy Athlete Development class, right here at Queechy! Our
program has the full support of the AFL and they are excited that our program could produce
some of the players drafted into the Female AFL league that is planned to launch alongside the
men’s league in 2020.
As we have a diverse range of experience, the girls have varying short term goals, with our
more experienced players setting their sights on the upcoming state selections, using our
trainings to hone skills and build leadership, both key components required to be eligible for
selection.
As we are considered a “feeder” program to the state side, we have past students such as
Newstead College student Maggie Cuthbertson still involved in the program, giving her the best
chance to continue her football journey, as well as some Waverley Primary girls who have been
identified as having the potential and desire to reach the elite level.
Although this all sounds super serious, at the end of the day we are having a great time, which is
the main thing.
We are currently seeking sponsorship to assist with purchasing team polos and jumpers with
sponsors recognised on the merchandise, if you know of any businesses that may be interested,
please contact me here at school or via email: adam.davey@education.tas.gov.au
