Did You Know? Get a sharper
memory in 20 minutes! Scientists at
the Georgia Institute of Technology
have great news for anyone studying
for a test, attending a job orientation or
preparing a big presentation. Their
study found that simply performing
toning moves for 20 minutes after
trying to memorize new information
instantly and significantly improves
recall. The likely explanation: The
same hormones released to help build
muscle after exercise also boost brainpower! (Source: Woman’s World 2/16/15)

THIS WEEK’S “BRAIN-BUSTER” (a/k/a You Think You’re So Smart…)
PERSON, PLACE OR THING? Can you guess what I am ? (Answer is on page three.)
I was popular with the ancient Aztecs . . . but didn’t become a hit in America until the 1800s.
I am a member of the Food Pyramid’s biggest family. I can be sweet or savory.
I am a top use for microwave ovens. I am named for a sound.
Americans consume about 15 billion quarts of me each year.
I come in a box, a bag, or a bucket. You could say I am in the movie biz, more or less.
I am the snack food that made Orville Redenbacher famous.

POETRY CORNER . . .
Winter Sunrise Outside a Café
Near Butte, Montana
A crazed sizzle of blazing bees
in the word EAT. Beyond it,
thousands of stars have faded
like deserted flowers in the thin
light washing up in the distance,
flooding the snowy mountains
bluff by bluff. Moments later,
the sign blinks, winks dark,
and a white-aproned cook—
surfacing in the murky sheen
of the window—leans awhile
like a cut lily . . . staring out
into the famished blankness
he knows he must go home to.

Week 4
The Answer is Fact ~
Singing usually is a more melodious
sound, while calling often is sharper
and more direct. Calls are used either
as a loud alarm note to communicate
danger, or as quiet chatter to locate
mates and other birds of their species.
For example, a northern cardinal’s loud
“chirp” call is very different from its
musical “what-cheer, what-cheer, birdie, birdie, birdie” song. Bird songs
aren’t always sweet music. Male ringnecked pheasants crow like chickens,
mourning doves coo somberly, kingfishers rattle and owls hoot. Woodpeckers
peck on a sounding board, such as the
siding of a house. This springtime hammering is not an effort to find food—it’s
a communication with other woodpeckers of their kind.
