Snippets 26TH FEBRUARY 2016 Our Values Respect Responsibility Resilience Compassion Principal’s Column Yesterday saw Donvale PS, a ’KidsMatter’ School hold its official launch of the initiative in our school with a ‘Wellbeing Day’ culminating in a wonderful community ‘Welcome BBQ’ during the evening. Throughout the day, the children were engaged in a plethora of activities that supported their physical, emotional and social wellbeing. As I wandered through the school during the day, I saw the children very much engaged in their activities, quietly chatting, smiling and enjoying each other’s company. It was wonderful to see. We welcomed St Kilda football legend, Lenny Hayes, who officially launched the day. We were indeed very fortunate to have the support of such a wonderful sporting role model. It was great to hear how he has focused his life on being positive with his outlook on all he does and of how he sets himself small achievable goals rather than one large goal which often can be too difficult to achieve. We are very grateful to Lenny for taking the time to visit us and share in our very special day. During the day, our children enjoyed participating in activities such as team building games, making stress balls and calm bottles, loom bands, newspaper pots, gardening, parachute games, just to name a few… We even indulged in some hand and head massage, yoga exercise, yummy fruit skewers and ‘free hugs’ from our SRC. Brian from Ignite Health and Fitness came along and conducted some fitness games with our level 1 / 2 students; Ruby and Flump, therapy dogs visited every classroom to bring some more joy to our day. The staff was also treated to an amazing morning tea presented to us by members of our parent community. Thankyou soooooooooo much for thinking of us! Elata Street, Donvale Phone: 03-9842 3373 Fax: 03-9841 7033 Email: Donvale.ps@edumail.vic. gov.au Website: www.donvaleps.vic.edu.au While we enjoyed the activities and had a day of fun and excitement, we remember that the message through Kids Matter is that we seek to instil in our children the skills and strategies needed to cope when faced with different levels of adversity. At some stage in our lives, we all face some degree of pain, hardship, sadness and anxiety. It is important that our children learn to cope with such conditions and to become strong and resilient young citizens of our world. We finished off our great day with a family Welcome BBQ where the entertainment for the evening was presented by our parent / staff band, ‘The Write Staff’ – and what an excellent band they are! Thank you, in particular, to our parent members Phil Vasiliadis on bass, Richard Van Gramberg on lead 1 guitar and George Jaeggi on harmonica. Staff members, Rick Gordon, Meagan Wilson, Ian McKinlay, Anthea Keep, Peter Reiter and Ethan O’Connor – thank you for sharing your talent with us. Also many thanks to Peter Gray who always supports us with his sound and lighting expertise - making everything look so professional. Thank you to the many families who joined us last night helping make our Wellbeing Day even more special. It was a terrific way for us all to get together, relax and take the time to get to know each other a little more. Donvale PS is such a great community and its days like yesterday that we really get to see just how great we are together! A day like yesterday doesn’t just happen. Many hours of hard work and preparation by many people went into the planning of the day. Firstly, I would like to thank the very hardworking staff of Donvale PS who always pulls together with such positivity and enthusiasm to have a go at providing new and different learning opportunities for our students. A big thank you to our Kids Matter Action team, in particular Lashay Cartledge, Bec Signorini and Meagan Wilson for their strong leadership and passion in delivering this initiative to our school. Donvale PS is known for its very supportive community and without them, the Wellbeing Day would not have been as brilliant as it was. The staff of Donvale PS would sincerely like to thank all our parent helpers in particular, Lawrie and Karl Spooner, Jaqui Frigo and Jenni Raftopoulos. Big thanks also to Liz Brown, Liang and Martin Dimitroff, Kim Merton, Loula Tarenidis, Donna Moulton, Janine Negri, Janene Innes and Marina Younger. Also a huge thank you to the members of our Parents Association, particularly Jo Wood, who always manage to organise the best BBQ’s. My apologies if I have left any one out – I know it was such team effort with so many more parents involved in the day - You are all wonderful! A big congratulations to Oliver M for getting his first 2 points from the free throw line! The Daisies lost 52 to 4 against a very strong OLOP team. The Under 11 Girls played the Donvale Derby this week. Daffodils had a strong win, with the girls showing their experience and skills, especially when shooting and on a fast break. Thanks to Scarlett for filling in this week. Diamonds played a great game despite the scoreline, with significant improvement in their team play and reading of the game after just three weeks of the season. A hard game for the supporters....go Donvale! Please remember to pay your Team Manager the game fees or your child will be ineligible to play. A reminder that sport shoes must also be worn by players when training at the DISC and food and drink is to be kept off the court area.
