March – April 2015
Spring is almost here and we are getting ready for the small pool to open
on April 1st, 2015. We are looking forward to seeing our young
members having fun again swimming and playing with their family and
friends. We always keep the small pool covered this time of year until
we have small pool swimmers. Do not hesitate to ask our staff once the
pool is open to remove the cover for you. We are also in the process of
installing a shuffle board area. We hope you enjoy and have fun using
this new feature at the Club.
Tennis Mixer
Come and join us on March 17th for our St Patrick’s Day Tennis Mixer
Potluck. This tennis event will start at 6:30pm and end at 8:30pm. You
will have the opportunity to play with people at your own level. Tennis
activities will start promptly at 6:30pm. There will be a potluck
following the tennis play. We will award the person who brings the best
tasting Irish dish a prize of ONE MONTH FREE dues. Registration for
this event is required in advance. We have received great feedback on
our mixers and they have grown to become quite a popular event at our
club. Look for the sign up flyer in this Newsletter, just fill it out and turn
it into the front desk by March 13th to sign up for this event. The flyer is
also available on our website, We hope to see you there!
Easter Egg Hunt 2015
The Annual Easter Egg Hunt will be on March 28th 2015 at 10am sharp.
This is a free event for our little members . We will be giving out prizes
to the little ones who find the golden eggs. The gates open at 10am
sharp. Please arrive a little early so that you are on time, because once
the gates are open the eggs are picked up very quickly by the children. If
you would like to attend this event we ask that you fill out the Easter
Egg Hunt flyer and return it to the front desk at least one week before
the event. The flyers are available at the club or on the website
bovswim.com.

*All classes are 55 minutes except for noon classes which are 45 minutes*
Aqua Fit
Join us year round for a vigorous water workout that
includes cardio and strength conditioning. Utilizing
buoyancy and natural resistance, this class is fun and ideal
for those with joint-related issues such as arthritis and
fibromyalgia. Noodles and foam weights are used for upper
and lower body strengthening. Keep warm in winter by
wearing an aqua shirt or vest available online or at sports
stores.
Back Care
This therapeutic style class for those who suffer chronic
back issues, but who also realize the importance of
“keeping moving”. One of the goals is to correct muscle
imbalances while strengthening and stretching muscles
which are common culprits. Working within pain-free range
of motion, individual limitations, moving with ease and
proper body mechanics are the goals of this ongoing class.
Barre Fusion
This class is non-impact, fat burning, interval training with
muscle shaping isometrics. It will target all major muscle
groups to improve posture, strength, and stamina. We will
be using the ballet barre, light weights, and fitness bands.
Cardio Interval
This is an intense fat-burning class for those wanting to see
great results in a shorter time. High intensity interval
training or (H.I.I.T.) uses intervals of near maximum
exertion (boot camp drills), followed by periods of low
intensity (weights and power moves). This sweat-drenched
workout is designed to ramp up your fitness level.
Modifications are offered for all skill levels.
Cycle Core
This non-impact, individually-paced, heart-pumping
workout is suited to men and women of all ages. Cycle core
will teach you basic skills and conditioning which you can
incorporate into your personal fitness regimen and outdoor
cycling experience. You will also learn more about your
target heart zone and how to burn fat more efficiently.
Instructor motivation and great music will energize your
indoor ride!
Gentle Fit
This total body workout includes segments of low-impact
(no jumping), functional movement, strength, balance and
stretch. Using various equipment including the stability ball,
mini-ball, weights and therabands, you will ensure a
stronger frame with improved balance and range of motion.
Fall prevention and quick recovery is an on-going goal in
this class especially designed for active older adults and
beginners alike.
Zumba®
Experience this fun and easy-to-follow Latin style class. You
will dance to slow and fast rhythms for a heart-pounding
workout. Zumba® is all the rage in latest fitness trends!
Kidfit
Kidfit Jr (ages 7-11), Kidfit Tots and Kidfit Tot Yoga (ages 4 –
7) are registered programs that run three sessions per year.
Kidfit is designed to introduce kids to the world of fitness in a
fun and safe way. Basics of cardio, strength, and flexibility are
taught through various formats and games. Kids will be
introduced to light weights, balls, tubing, geo-mats, and bosu
as they increase core strength and body awareness. Kidfit Tot
Yoga (new) will teach yoga basics in a fun and appropriate
level for young bodies. Active kids are healthy kids!
Pilates Fusion
This essential class is designed to strengthen the core
muscles surrounding your spine whether you are performing
standing 3-dimensional movement or mat exercises. Pilates
principals are applied using stability balls, bosu, mini-balls,
gliding disks, therabands or foam rollers. All classes taught by
our experienced instructors will challenge your core and
create the well-balanced body you’ve been looking for!
Roll and Release
This class is designed to hydrate the tissues surrounding the
muscles using your own body weight to roll on foam rollers,
massaging away tightness and soreness associated with
muscle adhesions. This technique can improve flexibility,
function, performance and reduce injuries. The goal is to
improve joint mobility and to restore the body’s energy and
efficiency to work more freely throughout the day.
Step and Sculpt
A great 30-40 minutes of cardio on a step bench
with risers, followed by core strengthening, weights, and
stretch. This high energy class includes fun and challenging
choreography. Let the instructor know if you are new to this
class.
Tai Chi
Tai Chi is a Gung Fu or martial art system that requires
discipline and concentration to achieve maximum benefits.
Each Tai Chi movement follows the yin and yang theory to
obtain a high level of internal art, resulting in better health
and self defense. The art of body movement techniques may
improve arthritis, immune system, circulatory, stamina,
balance, and mental well being.
Weight Works
This popular workout will sculpt, tone and burn calories while
you gain lean muscle mass and increase strength by targeting
the major muscle groups. Benefits include boosting
metabolism and increasing bone density to combat
osteoporosis! Modifications are offered for all skill levels.
Yoga
Yoga postures known as asanas are dynamically put together
to strengthen, stretch, and relax the body and mind. As
there are several practices and styles of yoga, please check
with the instructor for specific information on the style and
format of her class. Yoga classes offered daily except
Saturdays.

Helping Kids Eat Healthfully
Childhood is the time when kids establish eating patterns that can last a lifetime. Teach your children how to make informed
nutritious food choices with these suggestions from Jennie McCary, MS, RD, LD, community nutritionist for the Albuquerque
Public Schools and chair of the New Mexico Action for Healthy Kids.
Kids Need 5 A Day
Help children get at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day with these strategies.
• Keep fruits and veggies readily available where kids can see them (e.g., on the counter or table) and leave washed, cut,
ready-to-eat produce on the top shelf in the fridge.
• Involve kids in meal planning and preparation. Let younger children wash spinach, tear up lettuce or peel carrots. Teach
older kids how to use a knife safely by cutting veggies to toss into a stir-fry.
• Make fruit beverages. Fruit smoothies are popular with kids and when made with yogurt or milk can also be a great way
to add more calcium.
• Freeze fruits. Frozen grapes and melon are a fun, refreshing treat for kids, especially on hot summer days.
• Play hide-and-seek with fruits and veggies. Blend cooked cauliflower or sweet potatoes into traditional mashed potatoes,
or shred carrots and zucchini into spaghetti sauce.
• Start a small garden. Most kids will eat vegetables they helped grow.
The Importance of Breakfast
A basic breakfast should be a balance of carbo-hydrate, protein and fat from two to three food groups: for example, try
serving a whole grain, low-fat milk and fruit. But don’t get overwhelmed by the task of making a traditional breakfast.
Leftovers or grab-and-go items, such as squeezable yogurt and a granola bar, work as well as more conventional fare. Foods
that can be eaten on the go include a mini bagel with cream cheese; a peanut butter and jelly sandwich; or a piece of fruit
and a bag of dry, unsweetened cereal.
Get kids to buy into breakfast by involving them in the planning and preparation. For young kids, this can be as simple as
having them set the table or pour the cereal or milk. Empower your children by letting them decide what to eat, but give
them a choice between two nutritious foods.
Feeding Overweight Kids
If your child is overweight, what can you do? Diets are not recommended for growing kids and teens. Instead of weight loss,
emphasize positive eating and physical activity changes. Try these suggestions:
• Eat dinner together as a family so you can monitor what your kids are eating daily.
• Sit down at the table, where you can teach kids how to eat more slowly, pay attention to their hunger and avoid the
mindless eating that may occur when watching television.
• Involve kids in planning menus, shopping for food and preparing meals.
• Make high-fiber fruits and vegetables a part of every meal.
• Focus on offering lower-calorie, nutrient-rich meals and snacks without severely restricting food intake.
• Buy healthier foods and keep them easily accessible in the fridge and cupboards and on the counter. Keep sweets, chips
and soda out of sight or out of the house.
• Limit sweetened beverages, including soda and fruit drinks, to an occasional treat.
• Reduce television watching and computer/video time to less than 2 hours a day.
• Promote physical activity as a family by taking walks, playing outdoor games and riding bikes together.
quick & healthy after-school snacks
Nutritious snacking is an important part of every kid’s diet. Here are some winning combos to try:
• peanut butter and jelly sandwich topped with sliced bananas or apples
• carrot and cucumber sticks drizzled with low-fat dressing
• apple slices dipped in peanut butter
• grapes and pear slices with cheese cubes
• fruit skewers dipped in yogurt
• whole-grain crackers with low-fat cheese slices
• pita bread with hummus
• air-popped popcorn
• yogurt with granola and banana slices
• homemade trail mix (raisins, peanuts, whole-grain cereal)
• bean burrito

We experienced an unusually warm and dry beginning to the New Year 2015. So as Fitness Director I
encourage you all to keep doing those rain dances in hopes of easing the drought. We are very fortunate to
live in a climate where it’s so easy to get outdoors and exercise. We have also enjoyed very busy classes in
the fitness pavilion and we are thrilled to have brand new flooring! The floor makes the pavilion brighter and
creates a spacious feeling which is wonderful. If you haven’t had a chance to peek in the door, please drop
by for a visit! This winter we added two new Bootcamp classes to jumpstart your New Year! Many members
requested these classes since they were so popular last summer. It is not too late to participate in these
classes geared toward the 9-5 working folks. Bootcamp is now offered on Mondays@ 7:15pm as well as
Thursdays@6am. We will continue to offer these classes as long as they are well-attended.
I am excited to announce that we will be offering another new class beginning midMarch called “Stay Strong!” This class is intended to be a stepping stone from our
Back Care class to Gentle Fit. Back Care participants have been interested in adding

a third class to their weekly routine, and this class will move slightly quicker than the

therapeutic pace of our Back Care class. Stay Strong will include simple low-tempo

cardio to build bone density as well as light weights to enhance upper body strength.
Our focus is to keep moving and keep our independence! If you have any questions

Strong” will be offered on Wednesdays at 1:00pm beginning March 18, 2015.
Current fitness trends (according to ASCM) still include body-weight training, highintensity interval training (HIIT), personal and small group training, yoga, functional
fitness training and programs geared towards the baby boomers and kids’ fitness.
The bottom line is that there are classes for absolutely everyone! Dance classes such
as Zumba are now perfect with our new flooring and so much fun if you like world
music or latin beats. We have a dedicated “Walk Fit” group who likes to walk at Lake
Chabot every Wednesday@9am with Kathy. We also offer a therapeutic class called
“Roll and Release” every Tuesday @ noon for those interested in addressing “stuck
stress” in the body, easing sore muscles and hydrating the fascia. As a side-note, due
to Jodie’s busy schedule, we have a change of teachers on Sundays. Cynthia will
teach the 9am Cycle class and Megan will be our interim Yoga teacher at 4:15pm
until further notice. Yoga teacher Marlene Schoefer-Wulf has taken a leave of
absence to study in India. We will miss her, and will be finding a replacement for the
7:45am Sunday class.
Our last Kidfit session of the school year entitled “Spring Kidfit” will commence
registration on Monday, March 16th@6pm at the front office. This ten-week session
will begin the week of April 6th and end the week of June 8th, 2015. We need to
remind all members that parents/legal guardians must stay on the premises of
BOV during Kidfit class time (45 minutes). Under no circumstances is it acceptable
to drop off your child and return to pick them up later. Parents are encouraged to
workout or do any other activity on-site as long as you can be reached. Since this is
a free program and the ratio for student to teacher is 12:1, we rely on your
cooperation. Thank you in advance for adhering to the B.O.V. Kidfit rules.

In closing, I would like to mention how happy it makes me to see our class members gather together for coffee and
conversation after classes. Our social time to bond and visit, laugh and share stories is a prescription for wellness
along with our commitment to good nutrition and exercise. We will be closed for Easter Sunday on April 5th, other
than that, we are ready to help you keep fit this year!
