During Mother Martha’s vacation and time away, we were happy to welcome the Rev.
Wayne Runner and his wife Karen. Fr. Runner is from NJ, lived in Rhode Island and is
now retired. This was his first time celebrating the Eucharist since his retirement. He and
his wife purchased a motor home and plan to travel throughout the United States. It was
a pleasure having them with us for two Sundays.
Did you receive your new church directory? Many thanks to the people who put so
much time into this booklet. It is a convenient way to contact our parishioners of Church
of the Holy Spirit.
The 2015 Lenten Series “What’s God Up To - And How Can I Join In?” continues each Wed at Noon with a soup lunch and Thursday evening at 6:00pm. Come for a
soup supper and join us as we prepare our hearts and minds for the coming Easter.
Lent Madness 2015 is in its sixth year running. People worldwide are
gearing up for Lent Madness in which 32 saints do battle to win the coveted Golden Halo. Calling itself the world’s most popular online Lenten
devotion, it brings together cut-throat competition, the lives of the saints,
humor, and the chance to see how God works in the lives of women and
men across all walks of life. The Rev. Tim Schenck says, “The saints aren’t
just remote images in stained glass windows or pious-looking statues.
They were real people God just happened to use in marvelous ways.” If
you are looking for a Lenten discipline that is fun, educational, occasionally goofy, and joyful, consider this your invitation to join in the Lent
Madness journey. Here’s how it works: on the weekdays of Lent, information is posted at http://www.lentmadness.org about two different saints.
Each pairing remains open for 24 hours as participants read about and then vote to see
which saint moves on to the next round. Sixteen saints make it to the Round of the
Saintly Sixteen; 8 advance to the Elite Eight; 4 make it to the Faithful Four; 2 to the Championship; and the winner is awarded the Golden Halo. This year Lent Madness features an
intriguing slate of saints ancient and modern, Biblical and ecclesiastical. Who is your favorite? Participate to see!
The next Vestry Meeting is scheduled for March 10th at 2:00pm or as Mother Martha
puts it: “Weather Permitting”.
Spring arrives on the 20th of this month. After this past winter, we will all be rejoicing
and looking forward to heat from the sun and the budding of flowers and trees and the
arrival of Robins and birds and new life. We welcome Easter on April 5th, thanks be to
God.

AN ARTIST AMONG US
Did you know that we have an artist among us? Many of our parishioners are talented and
may be artistic but Ken Poppele takes pride and enjoyment in painting as a hobby. Not only is
Ken an active member of our church and a devout Christian, he paints as he see’s God’s
treasures on earth. His paintings spark conversations and I was inspired to see some of his
work. Ken said that he has always been interested in painting, but he never had enough time
until he retired in 2000. I asked him several questions regarding his paintings. He told me
that he studied art at Raritan Valley Community College and took private lessons as well. He
uses oils, water soluble oils, acrylics and water color. Ken prefers the water soluble oils and
acrylics because they don’t require any harsh solvents. Oil painting is his favorite as he feels
he can achieve better results . He enjoys all styles of painting depending on how he approaches a specific subject such as realism, impressionism and painterly. His works have been
on display in libraries, the Emporium in Tuckerton, at various art shows where the paintings
are sold and at Pineshores Art Association
in Manahawkin. I was
privileged to see Ken
working on his latest
painting in Florida: the
White Snowy or
Heron Egret.

GIVE THANKS WITH A GREATFUL HEART TO:
Bill Matlack and Steven Stackhouse for repairing the gutter on our church in very
cold weather.
 The Vestry who had to reschedule their meeting twice due to Mother Martha’s absence
and the weather.
 Deacon Rich, The Wardens and Dorita who kept everything moving along while I
was gone!
 Dan Schneider, Deacon Rich and Rita Lanorith who organized and executed Ashes
to Go, a wonderful sacramental outreach for our parish!
 All who helped with the shoveling and salting help over the snowy month, especially on
the morning of the baptism on the 15th when we had many guests.
 Rick Mellerup who led the choir in preparing and serving a fine lasagna dinner in Feb.
So you think you know Lasagna? Well, Rick offered four different delicious flavors. It was
a true epicurean delight! Rick cooked for two days on the dinner. We served a full house
of people thanks to Lynn Robbins for the salad, Elaine for the breads, Paula for the dessert, Evie and a few other ladies for setting tables and making coffee; Kathie LaRocca, Tom
and Elaine Paul, Lynn Robbins, Marlene Johnson, Jesse Peterson for cleanup and serving,
Linda Carmona, Nick Suhr, Marilyn Hartt, and other non choir members to help serve. As
always, we thank Ernie Tews for leading our community dinner ministry.
Mother Martha thanks everyone.

St Joseph’s Day is celebrated as a feast day on March 19th on the Episcopal calendar. St Joseph was the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and step-father of Jesus. For Catholics, St
Joseph’s Day is celebrated differently in many states: In New Orleans, LA, with parades and
food, In New York, NJ, MO, IL, MA,, RI, it is expressed by wearing red., In the mid-Atlantic
area, this day is associated with the return of striped bass to the Delaware River, and it is
also the day when the swallows are traditionally believed to return to Mission San Juan Capistrano after having flown South for the winter.
Lent encompasses the entire month of March this year, right up until Holy Saturday in Holy
Week. Early Christians observed “ a season of penitence and fasting” in preparation for
Easter or the Paschal feast also referred to as Pascha. The season is now known as Lent
(from an old English word meaning “spring”. In the third century this fast was lengthened
from two days to six days. Eventually this fast became attached to or overlapped, another fast
of forty days, to correspond to Christ’s fasting in the wilderness. The forty-day fast was especially important for converts to the faith who were preparing for baptism, and for those
guilty of sins. The last three days of Lent are the sacred Triduum of Maundy Thursday, Good
Friday, and Holy Saturday. Today Lent has reacquired its significance as the final preparation of
adult candidates for baptism. Joining with them, all Christians are invited “to the observance
of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, ;and self-denial; and by
reading and meditating on God’s holy Word” (BCP, p265). The ashes received are to remind
us of our mortality and penitence . We are to remember that God made us from dust of the
Earth and to dust we shall return. (Taken from the archives of the Episcopal church).
We celebrate Girl Scout Sunday every March. It starts with Girl Scout Sunday and ends
with Girl Scout Sabbath on a Saturday, and it includes the Girl Scout Birthday. On March 12,
the Girl Scouts commemorated the day in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low officially registered the organization. This year, 2015 represents their103rd birthday. The Girl Scouts at our
church will demonstrate their understanding of the first part of The Promise… duty to God.
They take part in a religious service, wear the Girl Scout uniform, and earn their My Faith
badge. We have invited the Cub Scouts that meet at our church also to come at the same
time. We are happy to have them join us at Holy Spirit.

DID YOU MISS IT?
Ashes To Go
February 18, Ash Wednesday
Deacon Rich, Rita Lanorith and
Dan Schneider braved the cold to offer
ashes and blessings to over 40 passer bys
and those on the go. This year the Episcopal
Diocese of NJ offered an online directory
and maps of Ashes to Go of over 30 locations throughout NJ. What a great way to
reach busy believers and some who wanted
to know more about Ash Wednesday and
our Lord Jesus.
