Second Sunday of Lent
March 1, 2015
This is My Beloved Son, listen to Him.
2015 A NNUAL C ATHOLIC A PPEAL
C ALLED TO BE M ERCIFUL
We wish to express
sincere gratitude to all
those who have already
made their pledge to the
2015 Annual Appeal. We
thank you for
participating in the
merciful outreach
towards the least among
us in the Diocese.
“There is no limit
to the Divine
Mercy which is
offered to everyone.”
~~ Pope Francis
This past week 26
families pledged $8,230
bringing our total to
$64,330. We are
obligated to raise
$33,670 more to reach our fair-share
assessment of $98,000. Thus far, 198 families
have participated in the Called to Be Merciful
appeal. If you have not already done so, please
prayerfully consider what your pledge will be and
turn in your response card to the Parish Office,
or place it in the collection basket on Sunday.
Any monies collected over $98,000 will be
returned to the Parish to purchase tables and
chairs for the expanded Hall.
Our contribution to the ACA collection provides
tangible evidence of our solidarity and unity as
One Local Church called to Mercy.
Fridays in Lent: Masses will be @ 8 A.M. & 12P.M.
First Friday, March 6, the Mass at Noon
will be an anointing Mass.
Mt 17:5
The Way of the Cross
. . . And carrying the cross by Himself, He went out to what is called the
Place of the Skull . . . (John 19:17)
It was a hot day outside
— even hotter inside the
rackety old bus, stuffed with
people heading home for
Holy Week. We made a stop on the side of the highway to pick up a
few more passengers — and more dust — which swirled around the
inside of the bus until it found sweaty brows upon which to settle.
I was pressed against the window, my backpack at my feet,
sharing the two-passenger seat with a mother and son. We were
intimately stuck together by sweat. All I wanted was for the bus to get
rolling so that I could breathe again.
I glanced outside the window and noticed a woman walking
alongside the highway, balancing a large load of firewood on her
shoulders and head. She was bent over, her face staring down at the
hot pavement, waling to a place that seemed very far away.
For a split second the woman glanced toward the bus, just as it
jerked forward and began to move again. Ah! Air to breathe. I went
back to reflecting on the week’s gospel texts and liturgical
celebrations . . . imagining the faces of the people with whom I would
have the privilege of sharing another Holy Week in the mountain
villages of Honduras.
Suddenly I sat up in my seat, and turned to look out the window.
Where did she go? Where is the woman with the firewood?
It was as though I had just glimpsed the entire passion, death, and
resurrection of Jesus for the first time — embodied in the woman on
the side of the road. Yes, of course! Jesus! The wood of the cross on
her shoulders, the sweat dripping down her face like blood, walking —
faithfully — to a place very far away. I could see her face — His Face.
Like every mother in rural Honduras, she was collecting firewood
for cooking, to make the corn tortillas for her family to eat. For her
every supper is a last supper: Who knows if there will be wood and
corn tomorrow? ‘Take and eat. This is My Body — broken for you.
This is My Blood — poured out in love. I have come that you might
have life — life in abundance.’
There is only one Via Crucis, and Jesus walks it with us. Like a
mother, He feeds us with His Death, His Resurrection, His Bread, His
Love. ‘Do not be afraid; I am with you always.’
~ Brian Pierce, OP, Peru, No. 134, as quoted in Just One Year,
Edited by Timothy Radcliffe, Pg. 142-3.

As we continue along our Lenten Journey, we are called to focus
on prayer (“lifting up”), fasting (“giving up”) and almsgiving (“helping
up”). Christopher J. Hale, senior fellow at Catholics in Alliance for the
Common Good, commented recently: “Describing this phenomenon he
calls the globalization of indifference, Pope Francis writes that
“whenever our interior life becomes caught up in its own interests and
concerns, there is no longer room for others, no place for the poor.
God’s voice is no longer heard, the quiet joy of his love is no longer felt,
and the desire to do good fades. Pope Francis suggests that when
we fast from indifference, we can begin to feast on love.”
So, this Lent, our conversations with children turn to the idea of fasting/
feasting, not from candy or cookies, but shifting the focus to growing
better relationships with others- fast from selfishness, feast on
generosity; fast from discontent, feast on gratitude; fast from
frustration, feast on patience.
Guest Speakers Enhance the Curriculum! Our 2nd Graders had
a wonderful opportunity to experience what a court case involved when
Mr. Wishchuk visited the classroom and presented a mock trial.
Our 3rd Graders had a memorable experience when a Guide Dog
& its trainer came to visit. Boon (the dog) was a spry 18 month old
puppy who was preparing to go to Guide Dog “college” in April, where
he will be taught all the skills necessary for him to successfully guide a
blind person.
At St. Gregory the Great Catholic School, we are proud to offer an
education that is distinctive among educational institutions in our
community. Our students learn in a culture of faith, academics, and
service inspired by a focus on learning and living our Catholic faith;
supporting students to meet high academic standards; and reaching
out in a spirit of service to those in need. We pray for God’s blessing on
our ministry of Catholic education.
St. Gregory Exterior Paint Project
This last summer and fall, the church campus building exteriors and arbors were completely painted, with the exception of the exterior walls involved in the planned renovation of the Hall. The project included prepping all exterior wood
surfaces including arbors, siding, roof eves, beams, doors, and windows. Once the prep was complete, staining and
clear coat was applied. The work was extensive and included wood repairs as necessary. The last time the church
complex was painted was seven years ago. We anticipate this work to last a similar time period.
~ Tim Meisner
On behalf of parishioners and myself as Pastor, I extend sincere gratitude to Tim Meisner who generously shared so
many hours of his expertise to work with the contractor, monitor the quality and progress of the work, and ensure the
Parish received a first-class product. We are in your debt for an entire summer’s work!

Will you do a spiritual work of mercy
this Lent? One possibility might be
to participate in 40 Days for Life to

only human love they may encounter
in their short lives. No one wants to
face death alone.
