Can we, like Abraham, trust in God’s love and care? Do we, like Peter, want to stay in our “good place” rather than answer the call to journey with Jesus toward our own unknown future? Daylight Savings Time Begins Sunday, March 8, 2015 at 2:00 AM EST Turn Your Clocks AHEAD One Hour Soup and Stations—Fridays February 20 - March 20 St. Francis of Assisi, Brant Beach Soup - 6:00 PM Stations of the Cross - 7:00 PM All are invited to attend our annual Lenten Soup and Stations on Fridays through March 20. Please join us for a free meal consisting of a delicious variety of meatless homemade soups served with bread and butter beginning at 6:00 PM in the Brant Beach Church Hall. At 7:00 PM we will move into the church to journey along the Way of the Cross. Each week we will listen to readings, sing hymns, and ponder a reflection on three of the Stations of the Cross on Jesus’ way to Calvary. All are cordially invited to share one or all of these evenings with us. Please feel free to bring along a friend or neighbor! Please feel free to bring a favorite homemade meatless soup in a crock pot for all to share. Pastoral Visitations: Please notify the Parish Office if you or any of your loved ones are ill, homebound, in SOMC, nursing homes or rehabilitation centers. A Letter From The Pastoral Staff... “Transfigure us, O Lord, transfigure us, O Lord. Break the chains that bind us; speak your healing word, And where you lead we’ll follow. Transfigure us, O Lord.” -Transfigure Us, O Lord (Bob Hurd) In our Gospel, Peter, James and John were witnesses to the transfiguration of Jesus on the mountain. Today, the transfiguration continues in all of us as we grow in our faith through prayer, fasting and works of love. Just as Jesus died for us, we too must die to self. It is our mission to move out of the mode of selfishness and toward the goal of selflessness. Lent is the perfect opportunity to ask ourselves if we hear the needs of others before our own. Are we generous with our time and talents? Do we find good in others and let them know before we jump to criticize and look for the negative? Do we love and accept everyone, regardless of whether they are ‘different’ from who we are? Jesus gave us very clear instructions. He said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Parish Collections May we use this season to grow closer and deeper in love with our God who loves us and wants us to share in eternal glory. May we dedicate our lives in service to God by serving one another. Basil Valente, OFM 129 West 31st Street, 2nd Fl., New York, NY 10001-3403 The Global Catholic Climate Movement During Lent there will be a global rolling fast for climate justice. March 16 is the date for U.S. participation. You are invited to make that a day of prayer and fasting as a response to our present climate crisis. “The need to resolve the structural causes of poverty cannot be delayed.” Pope Francis, JOY IN THE GOSPEL. During Lent we are called, as was Abraham, to sacrifice, to give up, not only things, but also our secret attitudes and prejudices toward the structures that keep people poor. To what extent can we own our societal role in attacking the structural causes of inequality as suggested by Pope Francis in the following: 1. The market needs to be regulated to ensure that the 100% benefit from our economy. 2. Safety net projects, such as unemployment benefits and SNAP should be only temporary solutions for the greater good of fair compensation for hard work and fair tax rates. 3. Each of us is called to change this system of inequality. Are we willing to listen to the needs of those around us and to risk changing our current system of inequality through prayer, service, charity, and advocacy?
