Good guilt, bad guilt Parish Collections Second Collection Today: Friars & Sisters Stipends Did you know that the salaries for the Friars and Sisters are paid for through your donations? Thank you for your generosity. How can guilt be good? When we have done something bad or hurtful, we ought to feel guilty because we are guilty. Our guilty feelings mean that we recognize what we have done. Next comes repentance and making amends. We hope we have learned a lesson and have changed our behavior. Guilt like this is actually a gift, part of the flow of God’s grace. Even mistakes can bring us closer to God. I think of this as the bright side of sin. There is another kind of guilt that needs grace and healing, but not actual repentance. People sometimes feel guilty about something for which they are not responsible. These people are wounded. They use the word guilt because it is hard to express what they feel. They know that something is not right. They may feel ashamed or unclean or in some way diminished as a person. This could be the experience of someone who has been abused or of someone who has been involved in a situation that had unintended and unforeseen negative consequences. Even when there was no possible way of knowing an outcome, the words “I should have” are often spoken by people burdened like this. How do we deal with this second “guilt”? Time helps, of course. More helpful is speaking with someone who is well grounded and can offer a realistic perspective, the big picture. A counselor might be appropriate. I also think that, even when no sin is involved, the sacramental forum (going to confession) can help. Reconciliation/Penance is a medicinal sacrament. It is about healing the wounds of a sinner, but I think that it can also help to heal other wounds. Part of the word spoken by the priest is “May God give you… peace.” That is what we want: to be at peace with God, with each other and within ourselves. Saint Francis used to like the greeting, “The Lord give you peace.” Good words. The JPIC Corner: Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation FAIR TRADE or FREE TRADE Fair Trade is a just and sustainable economic system… “just” in that it is honest and moral… “sustainable” in that it is nourishing and continuous, to help people lift themselves financially out of poverty. Fair Trade organizations work directly with the makers of the products to remove the middleman (keeping the price down) and to pass more of the price back to the makers. The makers of the products gain respect by being paid fair wages and by using “green” criterion. This system of commerce endeavors to insure greater equality and to build relationships in the global trading organizations. It is long term efficiency and uplifting! Free Trade is an unrestricted system between countries based on short term efficiency of reducing wages, costs, environmental standards and safety…the downward spiral. Which system best honors JPIC (Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation)? Which system do you support? Vocational discernment groups meet to assist young men who are discerning the possibility that God may be calling them to a life of priestly ministry. These groups are designed to explore a priestly vocation with other like-minded men through prayer and sharing vocation stories and experiences. The group meetings aren’t meant to convince anyone that the priesthood is their vocation. They are designed to assist you in discovering if the priesthood is your true vocation and build your relationship with Christ along the way. If you are a faithful, single, Roman Catholic man, between the ages of 18 and 40, and are asking yourself whether God is calling you to be a priest, you are cordially invited to attend this month’s discernment meeting on November 23rd, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Saint Charles Borromeo Parish, 2226 Riverton Road, Cinnaminson, NJ. Join Very Rev. Peter James Alindogan and Rev. Chris Picollo, as they share their experiences of the priesthood, followed by prayer and conclude with conversation and a meal.
