These very busy weeks of term 1 have so much excitement, a sense of the new and a real energy about them. In this newsletter
you will read so much about that life and energy here at OLSH Bentleigh.
Our landscape courtyard will now be known as Hartzer Place – a wonderful way to recognise the great woman Marie Louise Hartzer
with the heart of our school. An outstanding achievement by our SCSA Swim Team, 2nd Place overall in the championship, 1st Place
in Intermediate Division and so many records and individual achievements. Well done and thank you to our swim team and their
excellent coaching staff.
We rejoice in the gifts of so many and we are grateful for the blessings that are ours as OLSH College.

Year 12 retreat saw our whole year level come together and
bond over several experiences we are bound to face in the
upcoming year. It was an enjoyable, reflective time with
plenty of activities that brought us laughter and sometimes
tears. Moira Kelly's presentation was definitely a highlight

Year 12 retreat was such a good time to reflect and
prepare us for the hard year which is ahead of us. It
was such an incredible opportunity for Moira Kelly to
come and tell us her story, which inspired so many of
us to make a change in the world. It is always fun and
enjoyable spending time with our whole year level.

A competition was run throughout the College for a name to suit our new courtyard. Being landscaped so beautifully, it is a space
in the centre of the College where many students can be found, both at recess and lunch times, as they enjoy being outdoors in
the garden with Our Lady of the Sacred Heart sitting watching over all.

and develop income streams for life.

Curriculum Matters

Parent Teacher Student interviews are an opportunity to touch base with your daughter’s subject teachers – to meet them, to
receive some feedback and to discuss opportunities for further development or support for your daughter. As the interviews are
brief it is sometimes helpful to prepare beforehand a couple of questions to ask.
As a response to feedback from a number of parents and staff in 2014, the following will be implemented for the 2015 Parent
Teacher Student Interviews:
Semester 1


VCE/VET/VCAL Interviews will be conducted on Thursday 12 March from 4.15pm – 7.00pm for all students studying a
VCE/VET/VCAL subject in 2015.
(PTO will remain open for bookings until 5pm on 11 March)
Year 7 – 10 Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Wednesday 22 April and Monday 27 April from 3.15pm – 7.00pm.
Semester 2



Year 12 Interviews in conjunction with a parent evening will be held on Monday 20 July with the interviews being held
between 5.30pm and 7.00pm, followed by an information session from 7.15pm – 8.15pm.
Year 7, 8, 10 & 11 Interviews on Wednesday 29 July from 3.15pm – 7.00pm.
Issoudun Interviews on Wednesday 2 September (times to be confirmed).
Prior to each set of interviews parents will receive an email with instructions for
logging into Parent Teacher Online (PTO). PTO is the online booking system used by
the College for parents to make appointments with teachers. PTO will close 24 hours
prior to each evening.
Please remember that parents can also book a meeting with a teacher any time by
contacting the College and requesting an appointment.

Recently the OLSH Geography class hit the road on their first field trip. The aim of the day
was to understand, first hand, both the natural and human impact on coastal areas. Our first
stop was Cape Schanck. We were accompanied by Ms Malone and Mr Wanless. Although it
was slightly overcast, the views were still spectacular. We saw some wonderful examples of
erosion and some of the strategies used to help protect the area. We made it to the car just
before it began raining.
After lunch we made our way to Sandringham Harbour (entertained with stories of Charles
the Rabbit) and although it was still raining, we were still able to see the coast line from the
car with excellent commentary from Ms Malone. Once at the Harbour we had discussions
about the area’s natural environment and what influence humans have had on the area.
We then moved on to Brighton Beach, to see the famous bathing boxes, where we talked
about the debates they have caused amongst environmentalists. Unfortunately the weather
got the better of us and we headed home with much more knowledge of coastal
environments.

Student Wellbeing News
Parents and students are reminded that whole school events are compulsory for all students. It is an expectation that all students
will be in attendance. These events include but are not limited to Camps, Retreats, House Carnivals, Feast Days etc. These events
help to build community and College spirit and are integral to who we are.
The Athletics Carnival will be held on 13 March - absence on this day will require a medical certificate.
All students must present at the Carnival with a hat and their own sunscreen.

Our student leaders successfully launched their theme for this year
“House Your Spirit”
This year’s focus will be on creating a great sense of House spirit throughout the entire
College community. To recognise our commitment to this great theme, all students were
presented with a house badge at the school assembly. The student leaders have a number
of house activities planned for this year that will all contribute to the Regnet Christus Cup
that is presented at the end of the year. So get into the spirit and ask yourself “House Your
Spirit”?
Congratulations to our Issoudun students who were recognised at our Assembly on Wednesday.
We wish them well as they embark on this journey.

The Foundation for Youth Excellence program recognises young people aged 10 to 25 who have achieved excellence in the fields
of creative and performing arts; education; leadership; or sport. If you are a young person living in the City of Glen Eira and are
currently competing or performing on a state, national or international level, then you could be eligible to apply for a Foundation
for Youth Excellence grant. Grants of up to $1200 are given out quarterly and are awarded to young people to help them achieve
further success in their chosen field.
To apply for a grant, you need to complete an application form and include a letter of selection. References and letters of support

Each year outstanding photo media work from VCE Art, Studio Arts and Media
students is selected for an Exhibition at the Monash Gallery of Art, 860 Ferntree
Gully Road. This exhibition runs from 4 March until 29 March 2015.
Zoe Kostopoulos’ (Year 12 2014) work was chosen for exhibition. This exhibition
celebrates the best of the graduating students of 2014 so it is an enormous honour
for Zoe’s work to be selected and exhibited. Congratulations Zoe. I have included a
picture of Zoe’s work. She actually made the mask of her own face and then chose
to photograph it producing this stunning result.
Although Zoe submitted this work as a VCE art student it should also be mentioned
that the strong work done from Year 9 onwards in photography gives students a
solid grounding in the production of such beautiful works. Our darkroom also
provides a unique photographic experience for our students.

Exciting, wonderful, astonishing, adventurous. These are just a few
of the words I would describe my adventure at Lake Dewar. It was
a jammed packed camp with so much to do. A basketball court,
four water activities, a disco, four land activities, a talent quest,
chess and so much more. My favourite activity was the stand-up

Thanks to Emily from the Academy of Swimming, Mr Nick Wanless, Mr Mark Santospirito, Ms Dianne Byers and Ms Robyn Rayment
who trained, selected and fed the team!
On Wednesday 4 March, Junior, Intermediate and Senior teams travelled to the Division 1 Tennis competition at Geelong Tennis
Club. The girls enjoyed the beautiful weather and the opportunity to play on grass courts. All team members showed excellent
sportsmanship and determination throughout the day. Despite tough competition, the Junior and Senior teams both reached the
semi finals. Thanks to Mrs Linda Naylor, Ms Dominique Lewis and Ms Megan Supple for coaching the teams.
The OLSH Diving team will display their skills on the diving board at MSAC on Thursday 19 March. It promises to be an exciting
night.

Grease, OLSH’s first foray into musical co-productions with De La Salle College Malvern, has really revved up in the last couple of
weeks. Of course things have been well underway since Term 4 2014 when we were approached by De La who were looking for a
partner school to join in a musical for 2015. Now, besides the weekly acting, singing and dance rehearsals that commenced last
year, publicity, photo shoots, band rehearsals as well as costumes and set design have swung into action. On Friday afternoon
(27/02) Andrew Murrell (Director), along with Gina Coetzee (Choreographer) and Bryan Smith (Admin) visited the Alexander
Theatre for a site inspection of the stage, orchestra pit and dressing rooms and to discuss possibilities for staging the production.
There’s certainly going to be a few surprises in store if we get to do everything Andrew and Gina were toying with at the production
meeting – sorry no spoilers – you’ll have to come and see for yourself.
The logistics of rehearsing and staging a musical between two schools that are not
around the corner from each other involves a level of complexity and requires
detailed communication between staff. Since last year we have been running
alternating weekly rehearsals at OLSH and De La Salle Colleges. This involves no
less that two buses transporting students for a two hour rehearsal and a parent
pick up at the 6.00pm end, which is no small ask at that busy time of day. (Thank
you!!) We are now looking at transporting crew and musicians to De La where the
band will rehearse and sets will be prepped and painted in the coming weeks.
GREASE is unfolding into a grand adventure, and as both schools have committed
to a plan of working together on co-productions for the next four years, we are
aiming to continue to build a strong relationship, producing some exciting theatre.
What has been great to witness over the past few weeks is the excitement and
willingness of the cast to work together in a spirit of co-operation and generosity.
Rehearsals have been dynamic, challenging and heaps of FUN!! Anyone walking
into any of the rehearsals in the past few weeks could undoubtedly identify the
high quality learning and engagement that have been taking place for students
(and staff!!).
GREASE will be performed at the Alexander Theatre, Monash University, Clayton on Wednesday 29 April at 12.30pm and
7.30pm, Thursday 30 April and Friday 1 May at 7.30pm. There are four shows, so come and see our first show together. Tickets

Our VCE Drama students attended a fabulous workshop on Monday 16 February to assist them in the
development of their ensemble performances, a major assessment task in their Unit 3 Drama studies. The girls
joined a member of the Education Team at The Malthouse for a day of exploring non-naturalism and how it can
be manipulated to create group devised drama. This valuable workshop focused on conventions and dramatic
elements, allowing students to observe, direct and finally create an ensemble performance.
Our girls participated with great enthusiasm and commitment; and they are already devising
their own ensemble which will be assessed in May.
As part of their work in Drama this year, Year 8 students attended a performance entitled
Improvaganza! on Thursday 19 February. Improvaganza! is an exciting and motivating
performance that illustrates and inspires creativity and risk taking. Built around the
fundamental skills of improvisation – spontaneity, character and scene building – Improvaganza! practically demonstrates skills
which can be applied to any chosen area of improvisation, including Theatresports.
Our Year 8 students were treated to a wonderful demonstration of improvisation
and several students participated in some of the activities with the actors. Many
students are looking forward to joining the new Drama Club at OLSH which will
focus on Theatresports.
