Rabbi Aryeh Scheinberg’s Purim Message:
I can think of no greater Purim of consequence in recent times than this year’s Purim.
I am using the ad that appeared in The New York Times as my Purim message.
May Hashem bring deliverance to His people and the entire free world..

San Antonio Hebrew Sheltering Society
Money to purchase food supplies for Passover is available through the San Antonio
Hebrew Sheltering Society. Funds given by the Society for that purpose are a gift.
No repayment is required. To discuss receiving money, contact Society president
Dr. Morris Spector at 210.734.0641. All inquiries are confidential.
There are no strings attached to the funds given.
The Society, comprised of volunteers, has been in existence in San Antonio since the late 1920s.
Although the Society was started to provide funds to shelter Jewish travelers who were in financial
need when they reached the Alamo City, it now is able to provide money for other purposes.
As you know, our long time accountant Linda Mitchell has retired after 21 years of service
with Congregation Rodfei Sholom. If anyone would like to make a donation in her honor, per
her request she asks that they be made to the Capital Building Fund.
We would also like to welcome Daphne Sohocki and her team at A to Z Bookeepers, LLC. We have been
tranferring over all our accounting services and ask for your patience as we get everything in order. To
contact our new bookeepers, please use: rodfeisa.acct@gmail.com

The Lion Seekers by Kenneth Bonert
These are the years of the Great
Depression when Isaac Heller--with his
mother and sister--arrives in South Africa
from Lithuania to reunite with their father
who had made the journey years before.
This epic novel tells the story of how the
Jews came to South Africa and what they
had to do to make it home.

In the Days of Simon Stern by Arthur Cohen
Nathan, a Jewish scribe, tells the story
of the coming of the Messiah in the
person of one Simon Stern, from his birth
on the Lower East Side through his
career as a millionaire dealer in real
estate, to the building of a refuge for
Jewish remnants of the Second World
War.
“ . . .and American novel despite its
Jewish peculiarity . . .”

Yarchei Kallah:
San Antonio high school students join national NCSY Convention
During Winter Break, NCSY held a special camp in Stamford, Connecticut and New York City, for 300 Jewish students who
attend secular high schools from around the country. The Texas contingent was joined by Eliana and Ariella Swart, who
attend Churchill High School and Congregation Rodfei Sholom. The following are their own reflections from the 6 day trip:
By: Eliana Swart, 9th Grade…
NCSY Yarchei Kallah leaves me a little bit speechless. It was a life
changing experience, and so many memories overflow in my head.
Three hundred teens, with their arms wrapped around each other,
singing Jewish melodies during Havdalah. We felt like a family.
Participating in Speeches, Shuirs and Chevuras impacted me while
discovering my religious roots. Finally, I could ask my unanswered
questions. This convention really made an impression on me.
The learning was actually fun!
I wish this feeling could last forever. I created friendships that are
genuine and real, and will be everlasting. I’m so lucky to be part of a
growing, dedicated, and hilarious region; and hope our chapter will
develop into a successful unit. These days really inspired me to make
a difference in myself and in others. Forever more, this memory of
Yarchei Kallah 2014 will be unforgettable.
By: Ariella Swart, 12th Grade…
Saying that I had a great time would be an understatement. It was phenomenal. I had absolutely no idea what NCSY’s
“Yarchei Kallah” program was about, and so I went blindly and skeptically into a light of inspiration. Without Rabbi Avraham
Scheinberg’s encouragement, we would not have known about the Yarchei Kallah and even if we did, we would very likely
not have considered attending. The coordinators of the program made it all about US. US - the future leaders and teachers
of our faith… US - and our materialistic ways that divert us from our creed. Yarchei Kallah was a remarkable experience
which drove us back to our own values and the tenets of Torah.
This program has such uniqueness because it brings Jewish teens from all over the country together, shows us that we aren’t
alone in our schools and religion, and in that way, we regain the strength to continue and prosper in the ways of Torah. There
is a kinship that was formed between our region and the others. Our similar situations in public schools drew the connection
stronger because of the realization that these people are very much like us. The feeling that we were all one, and the
incredible ambiance that was created, astounded me.
I cannot emphasize enough how amazing those four days were. The fun, the life-long friendships, the lessons and the
stories. Yarchei Kallah did its job, it gave me a spark, but I must do the rest in kindling the fire. I must keep it aflame.
For more information and to get involved, please contact: Ariella Swart, Board Member, NCSY Southwest Region…
