ANGLICAN PARISH OF PARKSIDE ! 1ST MARCH, 2ND SUNDAY IN LENT A spirited community seeking to be in tune with God, welcoming, nurturing, encouraging all, and responding to the challenges of our time. Covenant: Walking in Faith Gathering in God’s Name Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins, whose mercy endures for ever. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Opening hymn: 591 Sentence: If you want to become a disciple of Jesus, deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow him. (Mark 8:34) Prayer of preparation Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Kyrie (sing) Lord have mercy on us (x3) Christ have mercy on us (x3) Lord have mercy on us. (x3) The Collect: God of the living covenant, in the glory of the cross your Son embraced the power of death and broke its hold over your people. In this time of repentance, draw all people to yourself, that we who confess Jesus as Lord may put aside the deeds of death and accept the life of your kingdom. Amen [1] The Ministry of the Word Old Testament reading: Genesis 17:1-7; 15-16 Psalm 22:24-32 24 O praise the Lord, all you that fear him: hold him in honour, O seed of Jacob, and let the seed of Israel stand in awe of him. 25 For he has not despised nor abhorred the poor man in his misery: nor did he hide his face from him, but heard him when he cried. 26 From you springs my praise in the great congregation: I will pay my vows in the sight of all that fear you; 27 The meek shall eat of the sacrifice and be satisfied: and those who seek the Lord shall praise him - may their hearts rejoice for ever! 28 Let all the ends of the earth remember and turn to the Lord: and let all the families of the nations worship before him. 29 For the kingdom is the Lord’s: and he shall be ruler over the nations. 30 How can those who sleep in the earth do him homage: or those that descend to the dust bow down before him? 31 But he has saved my life for himself: and my posterity shall serve him. 32 This shall be told of my Lord to a future generation: and his righteousness declared to a people yet unborn, that he has done it. Gospel: Mark 8:11-26, 31-34 (a dramatic reading) (afterwards) For the Gospel of the Lord Thanks be to God Gradual hymn: 611 New Testament reading: Romans 4:13-25 Sermon: Julie Bennett [2] Apostle’s Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of the people (led by Bruce) Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Confession & Absolution Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled and wandered far off. a time of silence for contemplation Let us then ask for mercy, confessing our sins in penitence and faith. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves: [3] we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Birthdays and anniversaries Greeting of Peace Christ has reconciled us to God in one body by the cross. We meet in his name and share his peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Offertory hymn: 211 (i) Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever. The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. He was tempted in every way as we are, yet he did not sin. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. By his grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to walk in the way of his love. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of [4] heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might Heaven and earth are full of your glory Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that we who eat and drink them in obedience to our Saviour Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, may be partakers of his body and blood, and be made one with him and with each other in peace and love. On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ (sing)Christ has died, Christ has died. Christ is risen, Christ will come again, again. Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. As we eat and drink this holy sacrament, renew us by your Spirit that we may be united in the body of your Son and serve you as a royal priesthood in the joy of your eternal kingdom. Receive our praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom and in whom, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we worship you in songs of never-ending praise: [5] (sing)Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen (sing)Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, Lamb of God, grant us, grant us your peace, Grant us your peace, your peace. As this broken bread was once many grains, which have been gathered together and made one bread: so may your Church be gathered from the ends of the earth into your kingdom. Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. All those who love Jesus are welcome at His table. Healing prayer is available in the Peace Chapel at the back of church Communion hymn - sung by the choir: Tchaikovsky’s ‘Legend’ (music: Tchaikovsky words: Plechtcheyev) When Jesus Christ was yet a child He had a garden small and wild, Wherein he cherished roses fair, And wove them into garlands there. Now once, as summer-time drew nigh, There came a troop of children by, And seeing roses on the tree, With shouts they plucked them merrily. [6] ‘Do you bind roses in your hair?’ They cried, in scorn, to Jesus there. The boy said humbly: ‘Take, I pray, All but the naked thorns away.’ Then of the thorns they made a crown, And with rough fingers pressed it down, Till on his forehead fair and young Red drops of blood like roses sprung. Post communion prayer: God of mercy, may we who have shared in this holy meal know your forgiveness in our lives, bring your reconciliation to others, and be a sign of your wholeness in this broken world. Response: God of Sarah and Abraham, long ago you embraced your people in covenant and promised them your blessing. Strengthen us in faith, that, with your disciples of every age, we may proclaim your deliverance in Jesus Christ to generations yet unborn. Amen. Notices Post communion hymn: 593 Blessing & Dismissal Christ our Saviour draw you to himself, that you may find in him crucified a sure ground for faith, a firm support for hope, and the assurance of sin forgiven. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord: In the name of Christ.
