Last Monday at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral in Armagh, Archbishop Eamon Martin, Catholic Archbishop of Armagh and , primate of all Ireland, and Archbishop Richard Clarke, Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh, launched a new ‘Flesh and Blood Ireland’ (FaB) campaign in order to mobilise people to help increase the number of blood and organ donors. Welcoming the donation initiative Archbishop Eamon said, “The FaB campaign calls on all of us to recognise the importance of being an organ or blood donor, and it challenges us to recognise the need to respond with an act of generosity and love. It aims to raise the profile of donation within our Churches and encourages donation as a personal gift.” People who have given or received blood or organs in the past, A Benefit Night and those who have lost love ones as a result of a lack of blood or organ donation, were in attendance at the launch. TABLE QUIZ Parishioners and representatives of the health boards were also will be hosted in St. Mary’s present at this special celebration. The Armagh launch was G.A.A. Dr Eddie Rooney, chair of the Northern Ireland Committee for blood donation has said that, in the 32 counties, around 800 people are currently waiting for an organ transplant with 96,000 people receiving blood transfusions every year. According to the Irish Blood Transfusion Board only 3% of the Irish population gives blood. 3,000 blood donors are needed each week, while one in four people will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives. Over 1,000 Irish people receive transfusions every week in Ireland. Approximately 70,000 patients will have transfusions in Irish hospitals this year. A unit of blood lasts for just 35 days. There are currently 650 patients awaiting transplantation. One donor can potentially help nine other people. 8.30 p.m. €10 per person. If you cannot attend the quiz but would like to support, please drop a donation to Kathleen & Michael Shaughnessy, 252 Castletown, Leixlip. The event is to help defray the funeral expense of eleven year old Lalita Maureen Darlington, Castletown who sadly passed away on January 31st, (may she rest in peace) All support greatly appreciated. Through Christ’s victory over Satan’s temptations, “we have all conquered but we must protect this victory in our daily lives,” said the Pope. “Look at what Jesus has done and go with Him. This path of Jesus passes through the desert.” He added: The desert is the place where the voice of God and the voice of the tempter can be heard. In the noise, in the confusion, this cannot be done; only superficial voices can be heard. Instead we can go deeper in the desert, where our destiny is truly played out, life or death. And how do we hear the voice of God? We hear it in his Word. For this reason, it is important to know Scripture, because otherwise we do not know how to respond to the attacks of the evil one. And here I would like to return to my advice of reading the Gospel every day. Read the Gospel every day! Meditate on it for a little while, for ten minutes. The Lenten desert helps us to say no to worldliness, to the “idols.” Following his Angelus address, a booklet entitled “Guard the Heart” was distributed to those gathered in St. Peter’s Square. The booklet included “the seven sacraments, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Ten Commandments, the virtues, and works of charity,” the Pope said. To distribute the booklet, the Vatican enlisted the services of 100 homeless people, who had volunteered for the task. They were recruited by Archbishop Konrad Krajewski, who heads the office of papal charities, and has been working regularly with the homeless of Rome. Turin 2015 Shroud Exhibition The dates for the 2015 Shroud exhibition has been announced by the Holy See as follows – April 19th to June 24th, 2015 “The exposition of the Holy Shroud in Turin in 2015 will be held from 19 April to 24 June, the feast of St. John the Baptist (the patron saint of Turin) and St John Bosco, founder of the Salesian order. A recent press release from the Vatican stated that Pope Francis would visit the Shroud on May 24th, feast of Mary Help of Christians, patroness of the Salesian order. The origin of the Shroud has never been established but the Church teaches that it is the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. Further details on the Shroud can be found at www.shroud.com Archdiocese of Dublin Statement on Avalon marriage DVD Many parishes have been contacted recently with information regarding a pre-marriage DVD course being marketed by Avalon RC Limited. Most times we take the things around us for granted. If it is there now then it was always there or if I use it for that then it was always so. But sometimes great gems are hidden in plain sight and we only have to look afresh to see them. So what am I talking about? Well would you consider pepper something special. That spice you put on your food? Sure pepper is only used to flavour your food? Well maybe pepper has a bit more up, its sleeve. The peppercorn is in fact the dried fruit of the plant Piper nigrum which grows extensively across Asia including India and Vietnam. The different types of pepper are the same plant but harvested at different times and processed differently, for example black pepper is the cooked and dried unripe fruit, green pepper is the dried and unripe fruit while white pepper is the ripe fruit seeds). The majority of people are familiar with the taste and smell of pepper which is strong and pungent, mainly due to volatile-oils, such as piperine. Pepper itself is a good source of minerals like potassium, calcium, zinc, manganese, iron, and magnesium all of which have important and critical functions within the body. Pepper also contains many vital B-complex groups of vitamins such as Pyridoxine, riboflavin, thiamin and niacin. It is in addition a good source of many anti-oxidant vitamins such as vitamin-C and vitamin-A. It also contains other chemicals which are known to have disease preventing and health promoting properties. As such pepper has been used traditionally for a wide range of conditions including upset stomachs, malaria, bronchitis, cholera and cancer. The effects on the stomach and digestion are thought to be due to carminative actions which reduce wind and bloating including an increase in gut motility as well as improved digestion by increasing gastro-intestinal enzyme secretions. It is also considered to have properties which reduced inflammation. Topically, it is sometimes used directly on the skin for nerve pain. As I mentioned above we are probably most familiar with pepper on our food, however, even here it can surprise us in what this plant can do. Did you know that piperine can increase absorption of a wide range of nutrients from food including selenium, B-complex vitamins, beta-carotene. For me this is the most exciting. To think that when you put pepper on your food it is increasing the absorption of all the good nutrients in your food, So the humble peppercorn has lots of hidden talents. Next time you use it think of that. Anna-Maria Keaveney BSc., MSc., is a qualified Medical Herbalist and member of the Irish Institute of Medical Herbalists (IIMH, www.iimh.org). Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk has insisted that the struggle in Ukraine is the result of “direct aggression and invasion,” and not a civil war. The leader of the Byzantine-rite Ukrainian Catholic Church spoke to reporters after the Ukrainian bishops completed their ad limina visits to Rome. In his official address to the visiting bishops, Pope Francis had referred to the violence in Ukraine as a “fratricidal conflict,” and called for action to restore peace, without pinning the blame on Russia. But Archbishop Shevchuk said that his country has been the victim of Russian aggression, and “we expect the whole Christian world to take our side.” He added that the Russian Orthodox Church has been a “powerful weapon” for Moscow, and the stand taken by the Moscow patriarchate—which has blamed the Ukrainian Catholic Church for stirring up the conflict—has been an impediment to ecumenical work. Archbishop Shevchuk said that the Ukrainian Catholic Church wants to be “good neighbors,” and hopes for a restoration of talks with the Russian Orthodox Church. But at the moment there is no dialogue, he said. He also said that all Christians should work for an end to the bloodshed in Ukraine. The Ukrainian Catholic leader said that he and his fellow bishops were encouraged by their meeting with Pope Francis. Although the Pope avoided any hint of political involvement in the conflict, and insisted that his appeal for peace was aimed at all parties, Archbishop Shevchuk reported that the Pope had told the Ukrainian bishops: “I’m shoulder-toshoulder with you; I’m at your service.” Novena to The Sacred Heart of Jesus Dear Heart of Jesus; in the past I have asked You for many favours, but today I ask You for this special one mention request… Take it Dear Heart of Jesus, place it in Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it, then in His merciful eyes it will become Your prayer not mine. "Use your brains!" they say, which is telling us to think. We think with our mind, the brain being the extraordinary tool it uses. Thinking goes to a higher plain when we start reasoning - 'putting two and two together.' We're always doing that, working out all sorts of things, many of which don't matter that much. The big day will come for each of us, however, when the God who gave us life will want to know what we did with it. As we know, there is the Particular Judgement, when we will stand alone in Heaven's spotlight, and the General Judgement, when we will all stand before Him. The Particular Judgement will come, even for those who don't believe in it. What is true does not come from what a man believes: it is objective, and independent of what any human being thinks. In Australia we have a rock - you might have heard of it - it's ancient name being Uluru, given it by our aborigines, or Ayer's Rock, after the first white man to see it. It is six miles around the base, and 1,000 feet high, and that's only the tip of it. I was telling someone in England, Ireland or somewhere about it, and they didn't believe me. The Rock didn't disappear because he wouldn't believe it was there: neither does God. We know about God from two sources: Reason and Revelation. We know so much about Him because He revealed Himself to us, starting way back with Abraham and culminating in coming here Himself in the person of Our Divine Lord, Jesus Christ, who is as much an historic figure as Julius Caesar or St. Patrick, and can be known as such from undeniable sources. Those who have never had the advantage of knowing Revelation will still have to answer to Him, for He will expect them to know a fair bit about Him from using their brains. St. Thomas Aquinas, of course, gave us his five proofs for the existence of God: from motion, cause, contingency, perfection and design. I always liked the last one - it was simple, the proof from design. I had the joy of being in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh. It's got to be as beautiful as any in the world. Had someone told me all that carved stone and marble, and all that fine mosaic which covers nealy all the interior just came together when an earthquake threw all the stuff into the air, and it landed in that beautiful order, I would have called his psychiatrist. So, perhaps, when He judges us, He will expect each to have known at least something about Him and about good and evil. Ignorance of these things does not make innocence John W. Ó Néill, PP, New South Wales, Australia CROSSROADS Dr. Marcellino D'Ambrosio www.crossroadsinitiative.com Prayer, Fasting and Mercy by St. Peter Chrysologus, Early Church Father Saint Peter Chrysologus declares that Prayer knocks at the door, fasting obtains, mercy receives. His sermons were so inspiring that he was given the title "Chrysologus" (Greek for "Golden-worded) and was eventually declared a "Doctor of the Church." ‘There are three things, my brethren, by which faith stands firm, devotion remains constant, and virtue endures. They are prayer, fasting and mercy. Prayer, mercy and fasting: these three are one, and they give life to each other. Fasting is the soul of prayer, mercy is the lifeblood of fasting. Let no one try to separate them; they cannot be separated. If you have only one of them or not all together, you have nothing. So if you pray, fast; if you fast, show mercy; if you want your petition to be heard, hear the petition of others. If you do not close your ear to others you open God’s ear to yourself. If you want God to know that you are hungry, know that another is hungry. If you hope for mercy, show mercy. If you look for kindness, show kindness. If you want to receive, give. If you ask for yourself what you deny to others, your asking is a mockery; show mercy to others in the same way, with the same generosity, with the same promptness, as you want others to show mercy to you. Therefore, let prayer, mercy and fasting be one single plea to God on our behalf, one speech in our defence, a threefold united prayer in our favour. Let us use fasting to make up for what we have lost by despising others. Let us offer our souls in sacrifice by means of fasting. There is nothing more pleasing that we can offer to God, as the psalmist said in prophecy: A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; God does not despise a humbled, contrite heart. Offer your soul to God, make him an oblation of your fasting, so that your soul may be a pure offering, a holy sacrifice, a living victim, remaining your own and at the same time made over to God. To make these acceptable, mercy must be added. Fasting bears no fruit unless it is watered by mercy. Fasting dries up when mercy dries up. Mercy is to fasting as rain is to earth. However much you may cultivate your heart, clear the soil of your nature, root out vices, sow virtues, if you do not release the springs of mercy, your fasting will bear no fruit. When you fast, if your mercy is thin your harvest will be thin; when you fast, what you pour out in mercy overflows into your barn. Therefore, do not lose by saving, but gather in by scattering. Give to the poor, and you give to yourself. You will not be allowed to keep what you have refused to give.’ Parish of the Divine Word, Marley Grange Dublin Bus USED TICKETS Unclaimed credit from your used bus ticket can be sent to the Servite Missions - all proceeds will be used to help their missions. CGI Invitation: 33 to 1 Event Challenging Media Bias If anything has become clear over the last couple of years, it is that the media is the main driver for abortion. But in the past few months it has reached a point where we cannot afford to ignore it any longer. In the space of a fortnight recently, 33 articles appeared in national newspapers pushing hard for more abortion. In the same period, only 1 pro-life article was published. We are now expected to take this level of bias as normal. That’s just not acceptable. It is a waste of time complaining about the media and then doing nothing practical to address the problem. That’s why we are holding an event outside the Dáil on 11th March to challenge the media on their bias. It will be the start of a campaign to take the message of media bias to every corner of the country. But the size of the turnout on 11th March is critical to the future success of this initiative. The event will be positive in focus not negative. It will be respectful while resolutely calling the media to account. It is being held from 7-8pm on a Wednesday at a time when TDs and journalists are in the Dáil. I am asking you to make every effort to attend this important event. Please encourage family, friends and colleagues to join you as well. We need a strong united show of strength at this time. Is current CO2 regulation really a success story? What impact would further continuous tightening of emission limits have on the industry and the economy? What are the future alternatives? Experts, including some from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the European Centre of Economic Research (ZEW), recently tackled all of these questions at a workshop in Brussels hosted by Opel and the Hessian Ministry for Federal and European Affairs. Damien 086 0644662 Pope to Mafia: Jesus or Evil - You Cannot Choose Both Pope Francis has exhorted mafia to open their hearts to the Lord. Speaking to pilgrims in the Vatican's Paul VI Hall, the Holy Father reminded them how those involved in organized crime are choosing evil over Christ. Reflecting on his pastoral visit to their diocese on June 21, he recalled how he called out mafia at that time, and reaffirmed his stance today. During that visit, the Holy Father said Mafiosi “are excommunicated.” This message sparked reactions in Calabria. In the Calabrian diocese of Oppido Mamertina-Palmi in early July, a statue of the Virgin Mary was made to “bow” before a mob boss and the diocese's bishop suspended all processions in the area. An anti-mafia prosecutor in the area called the act a “challenge to Pope Francis." In his remarks to the audience this weekend, the Pope said “Those who love Jesus, who hear and receive the Word and who live in a sincere response to the call of the Lord, cannot in any way give the works of evil,” the Pope said. Jesus or evil!” the Pope stressed, noting you can’t choose both. Those who violate the dignity of persons, he said, cannot call themselves Christians. “External gestures of religiosity, not accompanied by real and public conversion,” the Pope said, “are not enough to be considered in communion with Christ and his Church.” Neither are such gestures sufficient, he underscored, for those with malice, arrogance, and lawlessness to call themselves believers. “To those who have chosen the path of evil and to be involved in criminal organizations,” the Pope said, “I renew the pressing invitation to conversion.” “Open your heart to the Lord! Open your heart to the Lord!” he said. “The Lord is waiting for you and the Church welcomes you if,” he said, "just as you willingly served evil, now you serve the good." In addition to these exhortations against organized crime, the Pope spoke about all the good their diocese is doing and reflected on the many positive aspects of his pastoral visit there this summer. “Dear brothers and sisters of Cassano, the beauty of your land is a gift from God and a heritage to preserve and pass, in all its splendor, for future generations,” Francis reflected. “Therefore, it must be the courageous commitment of all, starting from the institutions, that it is not scarred beyond repair by narrow interests.” "Oppose the culture of death and be witnesses of the Gospel of Life!" he said. (Feb 22, 2015,) To follow Christ, we must confront life's deserts, Pope says The 40 days of Lent are a reminder that we face spiritual deserts, and we must confront them with courage and the aid of Scripture, Pope Francis said during his weekly Angelus address. Delivering the Feb. 22 address from the papal apartments to a sizable crowd gathered in Saint Peter's Square, the Pope's remarks came on the first Sunday of Lent, hours before he embarked on a week-long Spiritual Exercises retreat with members of the Curia. The pontiff began his pre-Angelus reflection by speaking on the Gospel reading of the day, in which St. Mark gives an account of Christ's 40 days in the desert following the Baptism in the river Jordan. During this period, he recalled, Jesus was “tempted by Satan,” and “was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to him.” This “voluntary test confronted by Jesus” is one from which he “emerges victoriously and which prepares him to proclaim the Gospel of the Kingdom of God,” the Pope said. During the period in the desert, Jesus engaged in “hand-to-hand” combat with Satan, “unmasking his temptations” and being victorious against them, the Holy Father said. “Everyone has triumphed” in Jesus through this victory; however, “it is up to us to protect this victory in our daily lives.” Lent is a time of “spiritual battle against the spirit of evil,” Pope Francis said. “And as we cross the Lenten 'desert', we fix our gaze toward Easter, which is Jesus' definitive victory against Evil, against sin, and against death.” This is the significance of the first Sunday of Lent, the Holy Father continued: “to decisively lose ourselves on the path of Jesus, the path which leads to life.” He went on to highlight the desert as a place for listening to “God's voice and the tempter's voice,” which cannot otherwise be done amidst noise and confusion, in which “one only hears superficial voices.” Since God's voice is heard in His Word, the Pope reminded those present of the importance of reading the Scriptures daily, “because otherwise we do not know how to respond to the hidden dangers of evil.” This desert, he continued, “helps us to say no to worldliness, to idols,” while helping us “to make courageous choices in conformity to the Gospel,” reinforcing “solidarity with our brethren.” “Therefore, we enter into the desert without fear, because we are not alone: we are with Jesus, with the Father, and with the Holy Spirit.” In particular, Lent is a time of becoming “ever more aware of how much the Holy Spirit, (who we received) in Baptism, has worked and is able to work in us.” Before leading the crowds in the recitation of the Angelus, Pope Francis turned to Mary, the “model of docility to the Spirit,” who “helps us to allow ourselves to be guided by Him who wishes to make each one of us a 'new creation'.” The Pope prayed in particular for Mary's intercession during “this week of Spiritual exercises” in which he and members of the Curia were to take part, beginning Sunday afternoon. He then appealed to the faithful to pray for those taking part in the Exercises, they may “listen to the voice of Jesus and correct” their many defects, and “confront the temptations” which attack them daily. “Lent is a journey of conversion,” he said, adding that “our heart must be converted to the Lord.” For this reason, Pope Francis took the first Sunday of Lent as an occasion to distribute small prayer booklets entitled “Custodisci il cuore” – “Guard your heart” – to those in Saint Peter's Square. Each booklet, distributed by volunteers in the square, contains various tenants of the faith, including the Seven Sacraments, Ten Commandments, a list of the virtues, and the works of mercy. The Pope said those in the square should carry with them this “richness of our doctrine,” in order “to guard the heart.” “Humanity needs justice, peace, love,” he said, and can have it only by turning with all its heart to God, who is the source of all these things. Meditation made Easy … THE ROSARY … THE WEAPON! For those who may be shy of producing the Catholic beads in public, it may be of help to know that they are not alone when they pray the Rosary. Hindus, Buddhists and many other folk, use beads as an aid to their meditation. They sit still and pass the beads through their fingers while they repeat a sacred word or mantra. Touching the beads enables them to be serene and secure. The sacred word is more sounded in the depth of the being than spoken by the lips. So never be tempted to think that the Catholic Rosary is elitist or out of date. Praying with the beads is universal and belongs to every age and civilisation. To do away with it would be a kind of spiritual genocide. You can read more about all this in my book: The Riches of the Rosary, published by Veritas, Dublin. PLUMBER Fionnuala Ó Fiannachta Grains Again … Wholegrains - The Best Grains for A Weaning Baby: Grains such as oats, wheat, rye, and barley, are milled to make them edible. A small amount of processing is necessary to make these valuable cereals digestible. Unfortunately a large percentage of the cereals processed for human foods are processed far beyond what is desirable, robbing them of very important nutrients such as iron and B vitamins. Promise your baby that you will only ever give him the wholegrain cereals. With bread, it is important to start reading labels. Some “brown bread” is little more than dyed bleached white bread! A horrifying thought. As always, start with just one wholegrain, (not wheat). See how baby gets on with that grain before introducing any other grain, or any other new food. Always introduce new foods one at a time. Wait until you’re sure the new grain agrees with him, so as to observe closely for any adverse reaction. Refined grains cause untold damage: Western societies suffer many illnesses as a result of regular consumption of these highly refined foods. Examples common in our culture are white bread, white pasta, pearled barley and polished/white rice. There is a long list of nutrients which are removed in excessive processing of grain foods, to make a lot of our common grain foods, such as bread, pasta, rice, barley. And that is only half the story. The ingredients which are added to these foods are a list to be reckoned with. In the last few decades, medical research is finally filtering down to the ordinary consumer with the message that eating a lot of refined foods is not good for us. And that we need to replace most of our carbohydrate/starchy foods with the much healthier whole versions, especially our grains/cereals. Whole grains are superfoods. Refined grains are very poor, nutritionally, and for fibre. Fibre contains no nutrients, but is extremely important for our health. A low-fibre diet is a high cancer diet. For all these reasons, we should ensure our diet is rich with whole grain foods. For ordinary purposes, the whole grains need to be milled into rolled oats, wholemeal, or wholegrain flour, such as used in fine wholegrain bread, wholegrain pasta, or wholegrain rice and barley. And that’s all. Added bran often masks what is to all intents and purposes a fake brown bread. Bran contains no nutrients. Added bran should really only be taken on medical advice. Too much fibre can actually sweep out some valuable nutrients from your system, before your body has a chance to benefit from them. The cure for lack of fibre, where grains are concerned, is to replace refined white bread/pasta/rice/barley with their wholegrain forms. [If you or baby has a health problem from not having enough fibre in your diet, get medical help.] Fionnuala Next -Getting a Healthy Fibre Balance for You & Baby - 'Gianna Care is a confidential, life affirming organisation which helps and supports women in unexpected pregnancies and those suffering after abortion, completely free of charge. A priest who witnessed a miracle in communist Czechoslovakia in the 1940s was tortured and beaten to death for refusing to recant what he'd seen. And now Catholics from the country are honoring his heroic virtue and pushing for him to be recognized as a martyr. At a recent gathering in Cihost' commemorating the priest's brutal death, his current successor at the parish church says he's grateful for efforts to overturn the decades-long silence on atrocities against Catholics in the 20th century. “Naturally, I am glad that the issue of Father Josef Toufar is starting to be resolved in which it will be shown how the political regime in our country actually was,” Father Tomas Fiala told CNA. During the season of Advent in 1949 – the early phase of the communist era in Czechoslovakia – Father Toufar and some parishioners said they saw a cross at the altar in the church moving from one side to another several times. The event has come to be known as “the Cihost' miracle.” To prevent the news of the phenomenon from going public, the secret police interrogated Fr. Toufar, demanding that he say that he had moved the cross himself. The priest, however, refused. In response, the police beat him so drastically that he was unable to speak, walk or sit. He died two months after the miracle took place. After Fr. Toufar's death, the Church along with all religions were suppressed across the Soviet Union-led communist regime. The state was officially atheist and any accounts of miracles and those who spoke of them were treated in way to be erased from the record and the historical memory. 01-6292909 • Boiler service / breakdown • solar panels + solid fuel Domestic & commercial Call Darren 086-8389326 7 days CLANDILLON MOTORS Dublin Rd, Celbridge Service, sales & crash repairs 01-6275842 / 087-2810221 www.clandillonclassiccars.com MATTHEW & SON Building & Roofing CONTRACTORS Fibreglass roofing, uPVC, Fascia, Soffit, Gutters, Insurance estimates & Quotations, Established 1982 087-2347327, 01-6244249 CHIMNEY & STOVE CLEANING • Expert cleaning • Vacuum/ brush • No mess Gutter clean & repair Soffit / fascia power cleaning, windows etc ,,, CARPET / UPHOLSTERY Cleaning, domestic & Commercial • Call Martin 086- 8987404, 01- 4581042 M & M CLEANING LOCAL ELECTRICIAN ECSSA reg’d, Fully insured • Competitive prices • All areas, free quotes Ger: 086 106 9157 MASTERCRAFT ROOFING All roof repairs, re-tiling & slating, ridge titles, lead valleys, Chimney repairs. A series on food & health Bone health ... part 2 From the age of approx 25 our bones can start to deplete in density Usually though for women they remain fairly stable until the age of menopause, when the oestrogen levels in the body can drop rapidly for some, certainly not all women. So what can you do to keep your bones in tip top shape? The good news is a lot but the secret is putting it into action NOW, not in 5 or 10 years time. Many assume their bones are fine because they have had no incidents, accidents, falls or breakages. This is not an accurate or reliable source of bone health. Literally , you could be a walking ‘honeycomb’ in waiting for an accident to happen. There are four main methods used to check bone health. Dexa scan.( Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) It is X-Ray based, unfortunately it is radiation ( and i’m certainly not a fan of x-rays but at this time it is the lesser of two evils) but you can take precautions against it such as taking barleygrass,NAC, Yellowdoc herb, fennel etc which help move the toxicity from your body. The world Health organisation defines osteoporosis measurements as a T-Score compared to that of a young adult.A T-score of more than (-1) is considered normal. A score of between -1 and -2.5 is classed as osteopenia ( bone thinning, which can be reversed which is why early detection is so important.) and a score lower than -3.5 is categorised as osteoporosis. Ultrasound Bone scanner : passes an ultrasound though the heel bone. Results can vary on it and therefore it is not as reliable as the Dexa. It can act as a guide to tell you what zone you are in but I firmly believe the Dexa scan to be the best giving you specific area scores. Bone Turnover analysis. This test is more rare and only tells you how quickly your bone turns over/breaksdown. It does not tell you the bone quality or density. it is measured through a urine sample and is more used in cases where the treatment of osteoporosis through medication is being monitored Blood calcium levels. This is not a very reliable way of telling the health of your bones as it is only determining the level of calcium in the blood and can indicate other things such as the health of your parathyroid etc. Lots of my clients are misled with these results. Normal blood testing limits for calcium medically must fall between 2.152.55mmol/L. The higher the level of blood calcium the greater the risk of the calcium deposits hardening arteries and muscles, which is exactly why calcium supplements got very bad press a few years back. I will explain more about that very important subject later. Your calcium blood levels have to be maintained within a fine balance therefore your body will do what it has to , to maintain this level even take calcium form your blood if so be needed. LOTS more to come on bone health in the coming weeks so please stay tuned! You can request a bone scan to be carried out independently at many health clinics now such as the Blackrock, Beacon, etc. or discuss it further with your doctor if you are very concerned about it. Knowledge is power so knowing your bone health is a great place to start in making changes if be needed. The Ten Commandments The 4th Commandment … HONOUR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER God has willed that, after Him, we should honour our parents to whom we owe life and who have handed on to us the knowledge of God. We are obliged to honour and respect all those whom God, for our good, has vested with His authority. This commandment constitutes one of the foundations of the social doctrine of the Church. The fourth commandment is addressed expressly to children in their relationship to their father and mother because this relationship is the most universal. It likewise concerns the ties of kinship between members of the extended family. It requires honour, affection and gratitude towards elders and ancestors. Firstly it extends to the duties of pupils to teachers, employees to employers, subordinates to leaders, citizens to their country and to those who administer or govern it, (provided the laws they enact are in keeping with the Law of God.) ‘This commandment includes and presupposes the duties of parents, instructors, teachers, leaders, magistrates, those who govern, all who exercise authority over others or over a community of persons.’ While the 4th Commandment obliges children to be obedient to their parents or legal guardians, it does not oblige them to obey them in a situation where they would break the law, either of God or of the state. As the Bible tells us, those who look after their parents will have a long and prosperous life. Not a bad deal! Mary’s Meals is delivering food aid to thousands of people affected by the Ebola outbreak in Liberia – including patients infected by the deadly virus – following the launch of an emergency relief effort. Under normal circumstances, Mary’s Meals reaches more than 128,000 impoverished children across Liberia each day, attracting them to the classroom with a nutritious meal in school. However, the recent crisis has brought a temporary halt to the charity’s feeding programme in the country, with all schools now closed. Founded in 2002, Mary’s Meals runs school feeding programmes in 12 countries – across Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean – and is now reaching 923,572 hungry children every day they attend school. Whilst delivering school meals is the charity’s prime focus, it has a long history of providing emergency relief assistance. See www.marysmeals.org with the HARVEST BAPTISM part 1 A major issue that Protestants have with Catholic Church is Baptism. Some view Baptism as optional, labelling the Catholic position as “Baptismal regeneration.” Catholics do indeed believe that we are born as children of God through the waters of Baptism; but as with other Catholic doctrines, the Bible clearly and emphatically teaches it! Evangelicals have several terms for what is required for salvation: "Accept Jesus as personal Saviour"; “Ask Jesus into your heart"; etc. While the concept is correct, these terms are found nowhere in Scripture. Protestant theology teaches that faith alone is sufficient for salvation; and it is true that "believing" is necessary for salvation (John 3:16; 1:12), some passages state that believing alone is not enough (James 2:14-26; John 2:23,24; Acts 8:9-24). Church teaching reflects all the Scriptures; one must repent, believe, and be baptized. It is intriguing that so many Evangelicals who claim to hold to Sola Scriptura believe that Baptism actually does nothing. Therefore many who "get saved" at an evangelistic meeting will never touch the waters of Baptism. Consider what Scripture clearly states: "He that believes and is baptized shall be saved" (Mark 16:16) "Repent and be baptized.. and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38), "Go and teach all St. Padre Pio's glove will be nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the in Malone's, Shindella, Son and the Holy Spirit" (Matt. 28:19), "Be baptized, Rathangan, Co. Scripture healing, based on the person’s faith. is clear: to be "born from above" is to be born of water On June 16, 2002, Pope John Paul II canonized and Spirit in baptism. At Jesus' own baptism (John 1), He was (ritually) Padre Pio. There are saints who have been cleansed, the Holy Spirit came upon Him in the form known for healing; there are saints who could of a dove, and the Father declared Jesus as His Son "read" souls; there are saints who were known (Matt. 3:17). Christians believe that while Jesus did for levitation; there were saints who bore the not need baptism, His was baptized as a model and stigmata, or were seen in apparition, or who had example for us. In Baptism, God imparts to us the the “odour of sanctity.” There are saints who same things: cleansing (from sin); the indwelling of could understand languages they didn't know. the Holy Spirit; and Divine sonship. When you ask older people what is their greatest fear they will say it is getting Alzheimer disease. This is a very understandable and totally legitimate fear. We have no drug treatment or way of preventing Alzheimer disease and we still do not know the exact cause. However we do have a greater understanding of the underlying brain changes and the risk factors associated with Alzheimer disease. Alzheimer – the most common form of dementia – affects over 40000 people in Ireland. That figure is expected to rise to over 80000 by 2030. The overall cost of dementia care each year is 1.7B. A recent study of the risk-factors suggest that one third of cases are potentially preventable. We need to reduce risk-factors such as low levels of exercise, high blood pressure, depression, obesity, diabetes and smoking. Whilst these findings are enlightening there is no guarantee that the implementation of such findings will prevent Alzheimers. There are however a number of interventional trials presently being carried out at TCD. Large numbers of older people are taking part in trials that reduce the risk-factor. These are being compared to another group of older people where the risk factor remains the same. When completed these trials will tell us whether riskfactor reduction – such as increased exercise etc – can prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer disease. Irrespective of the findings older peoples’ health will benefit greatly from these lifetime changes – regular exercise, a healthy diet, brain stimulation and social interaction. Alzheimer Cafe is held in McAuley Place Naas (beside Main Church) on the last Wednesday of each month (79pm). All are welcome. Dementia Choir is also held in McAuley Place every Tuesday (11-1). B-Active Fitness Club Postural Evaluation Dear Grace Now that we are in the Season of Lent I would like to know more about the Stations of the Cross. I am curious about how the devotion began. Indeed, one of the most beautiful ways to prepare during Lent for the glorious Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ at Easter is meditate on the Stations of the Cross. This devotion goes back to the earliest times of the Church and has evolved over time. The object of the Stations is to help the faithful to make, in spirit, a pilgrimage to the major scenes of Christ's sufferings and death. Today, it has become one of the most popular of Catholic devotions. It is carried out by passing from Station to Station, with certain prayers at each and devout meditation on the various events of Jesus’ Passion, His suffering and death. Although it cannot be confirmed, it is believed that the Blessed Virgin Mary made daily visits to the places where her beloved Son suffered so much for the sins of the world. This should not be difficult to believe. What mother would not have done so? Blessed Anna Catherine Emmerich describes also, in great detail, how the Virgin Mary erected a ‘Way of the Cross’ near Her home in Ephesus where She lived with St John until Her Glorious Assumption into Heaven. The stations can be seen today in all churches, although some of the modern depictions of the sorrowful Way of the Cross are not conducive to proper meditation and leave a lot to be desired as regards their art content! Nevertheless, it’s the thought that counts and it is most pleasing to Jesus when we meditate on His sacrifice. For those who cannot get to a church there is a little booklet called ‘The secret of happiness’ which gives a very powerful meditation on the Way of the Cross The fourteen stations: 1. Pilate condemns Jesus to death; 2. Jesus receives the cross; 3. Jesus falls the first time; 4. Jesus meets His Blessed Mother; 5. Simon of Cyrene helps carry the cross; 6. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus; 7. Jesus falls the second time; 8. Jesus speaks to the women of Jerusalem; 9. Jesus falls the third time; 10. Jesus is stripped of His garments; 11. Jesus is nailed to the cross; 12. Jesus dies on the cross; 13. Jesus is taken down from the cross; 14. Jesus is laid in the tomb. Grace Postural Analysis - Linkage between Biomechanics and Emotional Expression It has been said that your mood can influence your posture. For example, a typical depressed, defeated or submissive feeling can make you slump and hang your head. On the contrary, feelings of being confident and happy will cause musculature in the body to be in a relaxed state, will cause the chest to rise thus improving breathing and you may walk taller. It is clear that the body’s emotional state reflects itself in the body’s orientation in space. If such a correlation exists between posture and mood, then should the relationship in fact work in reverse? A Research Study will take place in B-Active Fitness Club in Celbridge on 15 Mar 2015. The study will be carried out by an Osteopathic Medicine student – Pamela Coffey – who will be looking for volunteers to participate in the study for her final dissertation. Aim of Study: to gather data from a sample of the population and to use this data to investigate if there is a relationship between mood and posture. What will happen on to you if you take part? You will come to a room in the gym at an allocated time and complete a questionnaire that contains 24 questions. Then you will be asked to stand against a tiled backdrop with a plumb line at your back. Measurements will be taken to assess your posture. Photographs will be taken from front and side angles. No names/face shots will be used in the final report. It will not be possible to identify you in the final report. The total time you will be in the room will not exceed ten minutes. This research is being undertaken on healthy adults changed between 21 and 40 years of age. Non gym members are also welcome to take part in the study. Information packs (containing information leaflets and consent forms) will be available from the gym and will be available on the dates of the data collection. To sign up for the study please call into the gym on the 15 Mar from 10:30 and ask for Pamela. If you require information please contact pamelacoffey20@gmail.com or call 0861251077 (A large sample size is required in order for the data to be statistically significant so participation is greatly appreciated.) The Little Way Association Sacred Heart House, 119, Cedars Road, Clapham Common, London SW4 OPR IN THE BIBLE! The Church is the Pillar & Ground of Truth… (1 Tim 3, 15) The Bible points to the one True Church! Why Sunday? On the first day of the week we gathered together to break bread… Acts 20:7 It is true that the Catholic Church, through the authority of Christ, replaced the Hebrew Sabbath (Saturday) with the Lord's Day (Sunday). This occurred very early, well before the time of Emperor Constantine in the fourth century. For Christians two important events happened on Sunday. First, the Resurrection of Christ occurred on Easter Sunday (John 20:1ff). Secondly, the Holy Spirit descended upon the Church on Pentecost Sunday, fifty days later (Acts 2:1ff). Also after His Resurrection, Jesus appeared to the Apostles twice, each on Sunday (John 20:19 & 26). As a result, Sunday was known as the Lord's Day. (It is necessary here to bear in mind that our modern calendars have switched Monday to the place of Sunday as the first day of the week!). There are many claims that there is no evidence in the Bible for the shift from Saturday to Sunday. However in the fourth century, St. John Chrysostom cited Acts 20:7 as testimony. According to this verse in the Bible, the disciples assembled together on Sunday, the first day of the week, to celebrate the Lord’s Supper: On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them... [Acts 20:7] It is interesting to note that St. Paul had spent a week with the community in Troas (Acts 20:6), and he celebrated the "breaking of bread" (Mass) with them on ‘the first day of the week’. One would expect St. Paul to object to this practice, if it were not rooted in the Church founded by Jesus. According to St Paul, [Col. 2:16-17], the Hebrew diet, festivals and Sabbaths are no longer obligations for Christians. These were only a foreshadowing of things to come in Christ. The focus now is Christ (2 Cor. 3:7-17). Elsewhere St. Paul told the Corinthians to contribute money to the Church each Sunday (1 Cor 16:1-2). This would be a strange request, if Christians assembled on Saturdays! Proving once again that the Catholic Church, founded by Jesus Christ, has got it right!! Mick Manning - 087 9972823 FEASTDAY March 17th A novena (from Latin: Novem, meaning Nine) is an act of religious pious devotion in the Catholic Church, consisting of prayer offered for nine successive days for a special intention. The first Scriptural account of a nine day novena can be found in Acts 1; 14, where, after the Ascension of Jesus to Heaven, the eleven Apostles – with the Mother of Jesus – prayed for nine days and on the 10th day the Holy Spirit descended on the eleven and the rest is history! This is as true today as it was in the 1800’s when young French women, Victoire Larmenier listened to the social and spiritual plight of the young, old and abandoned in London. She felt compelled to provide a ‘home’ for the aged and education for the young. With the assistance of many generous friends and surmounting many obstacles, she established the first Nazareth House in Hammersmith, London. From there her legacy continues to be a lived reality through the Mission of the Sisters of Nazareth to those in need in many countries throughout the world If you would like to know more about the Sisters of Nazareth in Ireland, please contact: regional.ie@nazarethcare.com 32'Saw your ad in the Open Door!' Please ask for help – I’ll leave it at that for today! Today’s column is going to concentrate on some very serious research results emerging from a major scientific study. Scientists will soon be able to predict whether teenagers are likely to become heavy drinkers, by looking at whether they carry a particular gene linked to thrill seeking – this all comes from a detailed scientific study. The researchers said the first findings will help them to develop better ways at identifying children who are at risk of misusing alcohol. A study involving hundreds of teenagers found that a gene called RASGRF-2 plays an important role in predisposing some individuals to heavy or frequent drinking. The same gene is also known to be involved with “demand and anticipation of the brain”! Scientists believe this research will give a greater understanding of how alcohol affects people in different ways. People seek out situations which fulfil their sense of reward and make them happy so if your brain is wired to find alcohol rewarding you will seek it out. This comes from Professor Schermann of the Institute of Psychiatry in Kings Hospital, London. Previous tests on laboratory mice has shown that the RASGRF-2 gene influence whether particular animals seek out alcohol and their behaviour is tied in to alcohol providing a sense of reward - what they had to do to get it didn’t seem to matter. The most up to date part of the study looked at variations of RASGRF-2 gene among 663 boys aged 14 years. In this we found that RASGRF-2 plays a vital and crucial role in controlling how alcohol stimulates the brain to release dopamine and hence trigger the feelings of reward. “So” he said, “people who have a genetic variation of the RASGRF-2 drank much more frequently and much more heavily. The research was Pan European and followed boys from fourteen to sixteen. Interestingly they found that their contempories who did not have the gene consumed almost 41% less alcohol and consequently got themselves into 41% less trouble! Another way of looking at this is my own drinking story. I certainly drank as a reward but I also got a destructive buzz out of it. I became very selfdestructive and couldn’t seem to see what I was doing. In particular I lost all sense of feelings for other people. At the end of the day I was the only one that counted! Self-centred wouldn’t do it justice. So how can the above help you? Well you can keep a close eye on the various aspects shown about. If you can teach them that not everyone in life is a reward candidate for them and encourage them to start caring and sharing with their siblings. Try and moderate the ‘reward’ factor – much of what children do around the house should be expected of them anyway! It first opened its doors in Lucan, Co. Dublin in January 2006, and there are now four Pieta House centres throughout Dublin and one in Limerick. Four new centres open in Tuam, Roscrea, Cork and Castleisland.Pieta House provides a professional, face-to-face, free of charge therapeutic service for people in the acute stages of distress. The unique clinicallybased model developed by Pieta House is used across its five centres. Pieta House’s primary aim is to reduce suicide by helping people get through that critical phase when suicide becomes a plan rather than just an idea. The demand for Pieta House’s services continues to grow, and the first half of 2012 saw a 40% increase in the number of people attending Pieta House. As 80% of the organisation’s funding comes from public donations, fundraising is vital to ensure an ability to cope with the increasing numbers seeking help. To date, over 8,000 people have been seen and helped by Pieta House. Pieta House’s vision is that no-one in Ireland should be more than 100 kilometres from a Pieta House centre where they can avail of the clinical services at that time of crisis. • For info, www.pieta.ie or 01 6010000
