The Breezeway is located between the Benning Club and the MWR Pool. My wife’s father was undergoing chemotherapy and we were sending all the money we could spare to pay medical expenses. He contracted pneumonia and died very suddenly. We needed to make arrangements to travel to the Philippines and we needed money for funeral expenses. Mr. Lionel Grant, Army Emergency Relief Officer, went out of his way to help us. He explained the system and evaluated our financial needs to make sure that we would not be burdened by the loan payments. He helped us make contact with people who had information we needed. He came in early and stayed after hours to make sure he would be available when we needed him. He worked very long hours to make sure we would not be rushed and miss our flight. He was very professional and sympathetic throughout the process. We were and are very grateful for his timely help in our hour of stress and need. - Ice Comment This comment is in regard to Mr. Mark Mills, Employment Readiness Program Manager. I am glad to see he is still making things happen at Benning. I miss the area very much. If it wasn’t for him I probably wouldn’t have my career that I have today. He really gave me my start!!! - Ice Comment Very thankful for the 1st Division Staff and their love and care for our children. Ms. Gretchen and Ms. Tracy have gone above and beyond to accommodate my family and we really appreciate a facility that we can always count on to meet our needs! Thank you. - Ice Comment 8 | On the Go | benningmwr.com Summer will be here before you know it. MWR outdoor pools will open the weekend of Memorial Day and remain open through the Labor Day holiday. Among our most popular – the monthly Family Fishing Nights at Russ Park on Main Post and Family Campouts at Kings Pond. Kings Pond is billed as a rustic campground, which means you get the feel of primitive camping without having to dig a latrine. We have indoor plumbing, a playground and picnic pavilions. The park centers on a 75acre pond, which is off limits for swimming but great for fishing, boating and watching wildlife. Keep an eye out for gators and snakes and the elusive red-cockaded woodpecker. Make sure you have a fishing license, a life vest and a healthy respect for the wildlife. We host the popular (and free!) Kings Pond Family Campout five times a year during temperate weather in the spring and fall. This event starts at noon Saturday and ends Sunday morning. Saturday activities include free games, fishing, kayaking and more. Bring your own camping equipment, tents or campers, or rent them at Outdoor Recreation. Campouts are scheduled for Mar 21, Apr 18, May 16, Sept 19 and Oct 17. Kings Pond also hosts Glamping (Pretty Primitive Camping), Mar 14-15 for a fun mother and daughter campout. Activities include kayaking, a scavenger hunt, nail painting, crafts, campfire treats, and much more. The cost is $20 per person (minimum age 5) that includes dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. Space is limited and registration is required. Russ Park and Kings Pond may be our most popular outdoor facilities, but you’ll want to head to Weems Pond when you want to be alone with the other people who want to be alone. You will enjoy fishing and camping at the Weems primitive dry campsite just south of Harmony Church off Jamestown Road. Here, you’ll catch bass, brim, catfish and crappie. Reservations are required. The cost is $10 per night. Call 706-545-7978. Twilight Pond near Kelley Hill offers a very large pavilion with picnic table seating space for 120 people and charcoal grills all around the pond. Like most of our fishing spots, Twilight is off limits for swimming, but perfect for boating and fishing. Here you find an abundance of bass, bluegill, catfish and crappie. You can reserve a picnic pavilion at any of our parks or ponds free, but you must reserve it to assure its available when you need it. For a complete list of recreation areas and directions, go to benningmwr.com. For all your fishing and camping needs, visit Outdoor Recreation on Main Post, or give them a call at 706-545-7978 to reserve your spot at Family Fishing Night or the Kings Pond Campout. Adults see the day as an occasion to celebrate, sometimes with green beer and other assorted alcoholic beverages. However, few really know what they are celebrating or why the holiday is so important, particularly in the Americas. Today, people of all backgrounds celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, especially throughout the United States, Canada and Australia. Although North America is home to the largest productions, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in many other locations far from Ireland, including Japan, Singapore and Russia. In modern-day Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day has traditionally been a religious occasion. In fact, up until the 1970s, Irish laws mandated that pubs be closed on March 17. Beginning in 1995, however, the Irish government began a national campaign to use interest in St. Patrick’s Day to drive tourism and showcase Ireland and Irish culture to the rest of the world. Today, approximately 1 million people annually take part in Ireland‘s St. Patrick’s Festival in Dublin, a multi-day celebration featuring parades, concerts, outdoor theater productions and fireworks shows. BOSS members participate in a number of exciting activities, including trips, and they benefit from various discounts and free passes to shows and sporting events. Of course, they’re well known in the community, on post and off, for the many hours they devote to volunteering. COMPONENTS OF BOSS Quality of Life/Well Being: This includes issues that influence the morale, living environment or growth and development of Soldiers. Examples include problems in living quarters, parking, PX/ Commissary issues and concerns about utilities, such as telephone or cable service. Community Service: Activities are planned with on and off-post agencies. Many programs ask us to provide volunteer support for their projects, which have proven to be worthwhile for everyone involved. Soldiers acknowledge that volunteering makes a noticeable difference in their lives and the lives of others. All community service projects provide the opportunity to increase awareness about the BOSS program while demonstrating the outstanding character of BOSS Soldiers. Recreation and Leisure: Ideas for trips and events are planned and supported by BOSS Soldiers and coordinated through the BOSS advisor and president.
