ABOARD AN ETHICAL TITANIC
Anyone reading the newspapers in recent months might wonder if
our century has decided to abandon ethics. Our attention has been drawn
not just to individuals such as Sheldon Silver, the former Speaker of the
Assembly of New York State now charged with corruption, but also to
whole sectors of our society, such as the insurance companies who
falsified engineering reports in order to avoid paying for repairs to homes
damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
Unfortunately, I could use all the space of this column just listing
other familiar examples of fraud and corruption. I prefer, however, to
examine two possible causes for this decline in morality.
This discussion can be connected to our First Reading for this
Sunday in Lent. This passage gives us the Ten Commandments according
to the Book of Exodus. These commandments – the Decalogue – deserve
their fame because they stand at the head of the 613 precepts of the Law of
Moses, and they capture the spirit of the covenant that God made with
Israel on Mount Sinai. On that occasion God established a relationship
with the Israelites that required of them obedience to a specific code of
conduct as well as an attitude of fidelity and devotion to himself.
Accordingly, the Decalogue forbids certain actions, such as murder, theft,
stealing, and adultery, while also enjoining the people to love their God
with their whole mind, heart, and soul. In short, the Ten Commandments
are the starting point for a comprehensive moral code.
Throughout the centuries in our Judaeo-Christian culture it has
been religion that has brought a sense of ethics into our lives.
Unfortunately, as religion has receded into the background, so too has a
general sense of right and wrong. For example, the crimes and/or
unethical actions mentioned above clearly violated one or more of the
Commandments; but for many people cheating is wrong only if you get
caught, and the highest value is not personal integrity but personal
wealth. For such people the Beatitudes (e.g. “Blessed are the poor . . .
blessed are the meek”) are simply laughable.
My second cause for today’s moral crisis is that it is not just
revealed law that is being discarded. The concept of natural law has been
thrown out as well. The principles of individual freedom and privacy have
been raised to such a height that for many people there are no boundaries
to what is permitted other than what is clearly criminal, such as murder,
theft, and child abuse. Unfortunately, a society that has not internalized
an authentic comprehensive moral code will not be able to maintain even
minimal standards in a time of crisis. A recent example of this is the use of
torture by government agencies in the attempt to thwart terrorism. It can
easily be argued that such actions created more terrorists than they
stopped and weakened our moral voice as a nation.
Ours is certainly not the first century to suffer from corruption
and greed, but I do wonder if today we have the tools to fight against
these problems. If we do not see why injustice is wrong, why gross
economic inequality hurts everyone, why the common good is worth
pursuing even when it requires personal sacrifice, and why opinion can
never turn wrong into right, then we are indeed in grave danger as a
society. Perhaps the aspect of the Good News the world needs to hear at
this time is that there is, quite simply, a difference between right and
wrong.

God has great mercy and deep love for us. Out of

gift from God merits a response of gratitude and a

Reflecting on the Word
In the first reading and in the Gospel, we are presented with two of the fundamental institutions of the
religion of ancient Israel, the Torah and temple. The Torah, or Law, summed up in the Ten Commandments, was
the basic framework for the life of Israel; it gave shape to both their explicitly religious life - their duties toward
God - and their social, economic, and political life - their duties toward their neighbors. The temple in Jerusalem
was the central site of worship for the Israelites and was a place where the realm of creation opened up to the
realm of God, so that God might be present among the people and in the midst of creation.
In our Gospel reading, Jesus quite literally overturns all that. Many different interpretations can be given
to Jesus’ symbolic action in the temple, but at least part of its significance is that it announces that it is he, and
not the Torah, who will give shape to the life of God’s people; it is now in him, and not the temple, where God
and creation meet. As the Gospel of John puts it, Jesus’ body has become the new temple, the meeting place of
heaven and earth.
Of course, those who witnessed Jesus’ actions and heard his words did not really get this. As Paul says,
the wisdom of God often appears to us as foolishness and the power of God often appears to us to be weakness.
Part of what we seek in the season of Lent is to let God purify our hearts so that we can receive the wisdom and
power that will allow us to recognize Jesus as God present among us.

Family Lent Night
The night before Jesus died He
performed an act of humble,
selfless loving service - He
washed the feet of His Apostles.
Why would our Lord perform
such a “lowly act?” He wanted
to show His Apostles that to be
His follower one had to be a
person of “humble service,” and
that means caring for and about
others.
Each year at the Holy Thursday
Mass, the Celebrant does what
Jesus did - he washes the feet of
12 people. If you would like to
participate in this very prayerful part of our Liturgy, please

Envelopes for Easter
Flowers have been sent to parishioners who receive monthly
envelopes. These envelopes
provide an opportunity to remember loved ones this Easter
by providing Easter Flowers.
Please place the envelope in the

One-Time Volunteer Ushers Needed for Easter Masses
As many of you may know, we are extremely low on Usher participation at many of our
Masses. In order to be better prepared for Easter we are asking for volunteer Ushers for
our Easter Masses. The duties consist of assisting parishioners with seating, taking the
collection and distributing the weekly bulletin at the end of Mass.
We will need assistance at the following Masses: Church: Saturday, April 4th - Easter
Vigil - 8:00 PM. Sunday, April 5th - 7:45 AM, 9:00 AM, 10:15 AM, 11:30 AM and 12:45 PM. Auditorium:
Sunday, April 5th - 10:15 AM, 11:30 AM, 12:45 PM.
A sign-up sheet has been placed in the Usher’s Closet in the lobby of the Church for your convenience. Please
see any Usher should you have any questions and to locate the sign-up sheet for this one-time volunteer assignment. As always, regularly assigned Ushers should also sign-up for our Easter Masses. Please contact
Joseph Missilli at joemissilli@optonline or by phone - 516-799-3327 if you have any questions.

Don’t Forget Your Baby Bottle!
This weekend, March 7th and 8th, St. William the Abbot will be hosting a Baby Bottle Fundraiser to benefit The Life Center of Long Island. The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy center
that counsels women and men who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Did you know
that they provide free pregnancy tests, maternity housing with eligibility requirements, medical care, referrals, cribs, car seats, diapers and ALL other baby items that are needed. We are
asking that you pick up a baby bottle and fill it with your spare change. Most importantly, we
are asking you to recite the prayer on the bottle.
The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the counselors at The Life Center to say just the right words a
mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a mother’s heart to accept the truth. We believe these
prayers lead abortion-minded women to call The Life Center in the first place. Let us pray with our whole heart
for the lives of our unborn children.
Golden Wedding Anniversaries
This spring couples that have been married fifty years or more will be honored
at liturgies on Sunday, April 19 at the Church of St. Lawrence the Martyr in
Sayville and on Sunday, April 26 at the Church of Maria Regina in Seaford.
Both liturgies will begin at 2:30 PM. Couples may register for ONE liturgy.
Registration forms and complete instructions can be obtained at the Rectory.
Registration forms must be returned to St. William’s no later than March 31 for the April 19 liturgy and April 7 for the April 26 liturgy. There will be additional celebrations in the fall for
those who may find that more convenient.

first four Sundays of most months at 2:00 PM. To set a

Spring Fair
First-time families are required to attend a meeting which is held after
the 10:45 AM Mass on the first Sunday of each month. Also, at that Mass
there will be a special blessing for all new parents and their babies. The
Rite of Baptism should always be a community celebration, but in case of
an emergency please contact the rectory immediately.
Occasionally we receive requests from parishioners for a private baptismal ceremony outside the regular baptismal schedule. Unfortunately, because of Weddings, Funerals, Memorial Masses, Anniversary Masses, and
other parish events, the Pastoral Staff cannot accommodate such requests. If time is available on the church calendar, however, a private
Baptism is allowed if the family is able to supply a priest or deacon from
outside the parish as the celebrant.

Your Pledge of Support is Important
The Catholic Ministries Appeal for 2015 is underway at St. William’s. Our parish goal is $135,600. Your
support is needed to reach this goal. The Appeal focuses on four areas critical to the mission of our Church Catholic Charities, Education and Formation, Pastoral Ministries and Parishes. Your gift to the Appeal provides
the funding for the various programs critical to the continued success of our church here on Long Island and at
St. William’s through the Appeal’s parish sharing (rebate) program. We thank God for all of His blessings and
recognize that as we look back in appreciation, we must also look forward with a sense of responsibility to help
those in need.

VIRTUS TRAINING
ALL parish ministers and volunteers are required to have undergone VIRTUS Training and a Background
Screening. The Background Screening Form is available at the Rectory. The VIRTUS Workshop assists us in
creating a safe environment for children and young people by helping us become more aware of situations
that could be potentially harmful. Please use the following steps to register for a Workshop:
Go to the Diocesan Website: www.DRVC.org and click on “VIRTUS Training Registration” Select the site
where you will be attending the Workshop. (It is important that you register so that they will have your
Certificate of Completion ready for you at the training session.)
After you have gone through the training and received your Certificate, make a copy of it and send it to the
Rectory to the attention of Susan McCormick. If your Certificate is not available at the time of the
Workshop, ask the Instructor to forward it to you after the Workshop.

Long Island Catholic Magazine
We encourage you to go to this vibrant and current source of information concerning ideas and events in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
Bishop Murphy has a blog on this website and he welcomes interaction
with you.
Rick Hinshaw, George Weigel, Father Bob Lauder, and Msgr. Jim

Assistive Listening Devices
St. William’s has Assistive Listening Devises available for use during Mass. Our sound system
has been equipped with a transmitter that will send the sound directly to a small receiver
worn on the ear. The sound is therefore not affected by distance or the acoustics of the
Church.
The sanitized earpiece may be obtained from the Sacristan before Mass, and some form of identification,
such as a driver’s license, will be requested so that the borrower may be contacted if the device is accidently
taken home. We hope that this system will help all our parishioners benefit fully from our Parish Liturgies.
Low Gluten
Hosts
Available at
Mass
Pastoral Council
The Parish Pastoral Council meets monthly and would welcome
your thoughts and recommendations about any items that you feel
should be brought to the attention of the Council and/or discussed.
For those who must avoid gluten in their diet, the parish has
low-gluten hosts available for
Holy Communion. The gluten
content is less than .01%, and
these hosts have been approved
by the National Conference of
Catholic Bishops.
Information regarding Pastoral Council members is available on the
parish website - www.stwilliam.org. You can get in touch with members of the Council by dropping off correspondence at the rectory, or
leaving your name and phone number at the rectory. If you would like
to get in touch with a particular member of the Council, please make
this request in your communication.
If you wish to receive such a
host, please tell the priest before
Mass begins. Your host will be
placed in a pyx (a small gold
container) so it is not touched
by the other hosts. Expect that
the priest from whom you requested the host will give it to
you at Communion time.
The Flowers that are placed in front of the Altar every
weekend (aside from Lent) as well as the Bread and
Wine that is used at Mass throughout the week are available as
memorials.
Memorials Available
Anyone wishing to donate the Flowers or Bread and Wine in memory
of a loved one or on the occasion of an anniversary, birthday, etc., can
make this request at the Rectory. The offering for the Flowers is $75
and $50 for the Bread and Wine. For each particular week, the name of
the person will be announced in the bulletin.
