March 8, 2015 Third Sunday of Lent DID YOU KNOW St. Nicholas Parish Senior Singles ...Little Company of Mary Sisters and Associates We will be gathering for lunch at the 19th Hole (Gate 12), at 24122 Moulton Parkway, Laguna Woods, on Friday, March 13 at 12:30PM. All seating reserved. RSVP—Dolores: 472-3580. Last week we discussed the Little Company of Mary Sisters and this week we offer information on the Little Company of Mary Associates. “It is at the foot of the cross that we take our stand with Mary—to pray for the sick and the dying and to bring the healing presence of Christ through our Ministry.” —Venerable Mary Potter Mary Potter was born in Bermondsey, London, England, in 1847. At age 21, she joined the Sisters of Mercy only to have to leave within the year because of illness. Pain and illness plagued her on and off from that time. Because of her compassion for others who were suffering as she was, she recruited four women to help her comfort and minister to others who were ill and dying. She convinced the Bishop of Nottingham to help her find a building in which she could begin her Mission. Hence, the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary was founded on July 2, 1877, the title referring to the little company of faithful followers who remained with Mary, His Mother, at the foot of the Cross on Calvary, offering both Jesus and Mary their compassionate presence. In 1987, the LCM Province leader asked the Sisters here at St. Nicholas to form an Associate program made up of lay men and women who would help with the mission of praying/caring for the sick and dying. It would be the first in America. Nine women, after taking the required classes, made their public commitment at a parish Mass and became St. Nicholas’ first Little Company of Mary Associates. They and, the new Associates who followed, serve as Eucharistic Ministers to the Altar and Sick/Homebound. These Associates visit and bring Communion to the homebound, hospital and seven facilities in the Laguna Woods area. These laymen and women offer their compassion and consolation to those who are suffering. The Associates hold monthly gatherings. This past year they donated $2,500 which helped support South County OutReach at Thanksgiving, Adopt-A-Platoon and Heifer International at Christmas and the LCM Nursing Education Fund at the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance in January 2015. Today there are currently 39 Associates and a new class will be held this year. The class travels “The Stages of the Journey,” and upon completion the new candidates also make a commitment at a special Eucharistic Liturgy and receive the LCM Associate Emblem. From there they will join the other Associates and the Little Company of Mary in following the charism of Venerable Mary Potter. THANK YOU! Thank you for your generous donations to the collection for the Churches in Latin America/Eastern Europe. Your support helps ensure the availability of adequate catechesis, marriage/ family programs and religious and seminarian formation. Thank you for sharing your faith! By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer, the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday.
