What can keep us from the presence of God?
Jesus’ dramatic cleansing of the temple was
seen by his disciples as a prophetic sign of
God’s action. The temple was understood as
the dwelling place of God among his people.
When God delivered his people from slavery
in Egypt, he brought them through the sea, and
finally to Mount Sinai where he made a
covenant with them and gave them a new way
of life embodied in the Ten Commandments
(Exodus 20:1-17). God gave Moses instruction
for worship and for making the Tabernacle, or
tent of meeting, which was later replaced by
the temple. The New Testament tells us that these “serve as a copy and
shadow of the heavenly sanctuary” - God’s Temple in heaven (Hebrews
8:5). Jesus’ cleansing of the temple is also a prophetic sign of what he
wants to do with each of us. He ever seeks to cleanse us of sin and make
us living temples of his Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). Do you thirst
for holiness?
Jesus referred to the temple as his Father’s house which was being made
into "house of trade" (John 2:16) or "den of robbers" (Mark 11:17). That
is why he used force to expel the money-chargers. The prophecy of
Malachi foretold the coming of the Lord unexpectedly to his Temple to
"purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, till they
present right offerings to the Lord" (Malachi 3:1-4). Jesus' disciples
recalled the words of Psalm 69: "Zeal for your house will consume me."
This was understood as a Messianic prophecy.
We will have Live Stations of The Cross on Good

During Holy Week, Christians
commemorate the Passion of
Christ, Who died on Good Friday
in reparation for the sins of
mankind, and rose on Easter
Sunday to give new life to all who
believe. Thus, while Holy Week is
solemn and sorrowful, it also
anticipates the joy of Easter
through the recognition of God's
goodness in sending His Son to die
for our salvation.

Among the meaningful ways to commemorate the loss of a loved one
is to make a gift in their honor. Gifts may be made to the St. James
School Endowment Fund in memory of, or in honor of a friend or
loved one. The Endowment Fund provides tuition assistance for the
children in our Parish who attend Catholic elementary schools. You
may contribute to the Fund at any time and on any occasion. At your
request, a card will be sent to an honoree or bereaved family.
To make a tribute gift or a donation to the Endowment Fund,
please contact: Deora Tinsley, 471-5211
In 1912, as Charles Austin Miles grabbed his Bible, it opened to John
20. Reading the account of Mary Magdalene outside the garden tomb
where Jesus’ body had been laid, Miles felt powerfully that he was
there. Inspired, he quickly wrote the poem “In the Garden” and later
composed the music.
This hymn might seem sentimental and trite, if understood to refer to
just any garden. But the song takes on profound meaning when
recognized as Mary’s personal encounter with the living Lord.
And he walks with me, and he talks with me
And he tells me I am his own,
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known!

“The joyful news that [Christ] is
risen does not change the
contemporary world. Still before
us lie work, discipline, sacrifice.
But the fact of Easter gives us the
spiritual power to do the work,
accept the discipline, and make
the sacrifice.”

are often depicted in
groups of three

MONTH OF MARCH SCEDULE
By reading the Scriptures I am so renewed that all nature seems renewed around me and with me.
The sky seems to be a pure, a cooler blue, the trees a deeper green.
The whole world is charged with the glory of God and I feel fire and music under my feet.

Imagine if, coming into church each week, we were faced with stalls set up and people trying to sell us their
bread - their wine - their service books - their hymn books - anything that we might need for our worship.
At first, of course, we would feel affronted - but, as time went by we would probably get used to it. we might
not like it very much - but we would get accustomed to buying or altar bread from one stall - our wine from
another. We would get to know the stall-holders - pass the time of day - and perhaps accept that this was
normal.
Obviously, this had happened to the people who visited the Temple at the time of Jesus. Those going to make
sacrifices did need pigeons and cattle and lambs. If they were farmers, it was easier - but for the majority, the
stall-holders were offering a service. The authorities had tried to make it clear that this was a religious activity
by insisting that animals being bought for sacrifice had to be purchased with a special currency - Templemoney. This, of course, also had to be bought.
So - people coming to worship in the Temple were first confronted with scenes very close to those of the
market-place.
Now, Jesus was not afraid of the market-place - he spent a lot of time there, teaching, preaching and healing.
But, when confronted with the same things in the Temple, he became angry. As someone who regularly went
off to quiet places to pray, he knew how essential it was - and how disruptive a noisy, bustle place could be.
The authorities are understandably angry in return - who does Jesus think he is?
Jesus understands that the days of the Temple are numbered - and that, in fact, a new Temple is being built - a
new Kingdom. He is himself a Temple - a place where God is and all too soon, the sanctuary that was his own
body would seem to be destroyed. But, unlike the Temple - so painstakingly built over so many years and so
difficult to rebuild when destroyed, his body was charged with the very life of God and death could not hold
him.
This gift he passed on to his disciples - making them temples of the holy Spirit - the presence of God in the
world
