About The UHSI:
The Urban Health Society of India (UHSI) is an association of researchers, scholars, professionals,
community members, workers and activists from various disciplines, roles and areas whose work is directly
related to the health and health determinants effecting urban environments and urbanization. Founded in
2010, UHSI has since grown to include a large and widespread network of individuals and the institutes
dedicated to urban health and are already heading 200 mark of membership.
About The IIHMR University:
The IIHMR University is a specialized research university in management research, postgraduate
education and training, exclusively in the health sector. The University aims to generate new knowledge
and technologies to provide evidence and inputs for developing effective policies, health interventions and
strategies. The origin of the IIHMR University has its roots in pioneering and significant contribution of
Institute of Health Management Research, (IIHMR) Jaipur in the last three decades in policy and program
management research and capacity development in health and hospital management in India and South
East Asia.
The IIHMR University has a mission to improve the standards of health through better management of
health care and related programs through management research, education, training and institutional
networking in a national and global perspective in the health sector. World Health Organization designated
IIHMR as a WHO Collaborating Centre for District Health Systems based on Primary Health Care for its
significant contribution in strengthening health systems by promoting and conducting health policy and
program management research and capacity building. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,
Government of India identified it as Institute of Excellence for training and capacity building. A critical mass
of professionally trained health care, hospital, rural and pharmaceutical managers has been produced by
IIHMR to better manage health systems. The University has been instrumental in a paradigm shift in
management of health care programs and hospitals in India. For its significant contribution in health,
hospital, rural and pharmaceutical management education, it has been awarded several Leadership /Best
sectoral B school Awards. In addition, IIHMR has become a major destination for training and capacity
development in leadership and strategic management, hospital management, disaster management, quality
management, project management, health management information systems, urban health, water and
sanitation, health economics and finance.
About The National Conference:
Local governments are diverse in their structure, power, and community representativeness. Yet, they
share common roles and responsibilities in implementing pro-equity policy and planning. Motivations for
local governments to tackle health inequities vary, too. If there is significant local interest and the political
will to address health inequities, actions can be motivated internally. In other cases, national imperatives
may influence local governments to translate health equity targets or goals into action at the local level.
Urban Governance is not the sole domain of government, but the combined effort of multiple actors,
including different levels of government, non-governmental organisation, the private sector and the
community. In the best-managed cities, local government takes a leadership role in combing the talent and
powers of all sectors. To reduce health inequities in urban settings, multiple sectors act in a coordinated

fashion on the complex web of health determinants. The specific sectors for involvement will depend on the
nature of the health inequity and the organisational arrangement of the government, but typically would
include representatives from municipal, government departments, national level ministries, civil societies
and the private sector. Vertical partnerships between national, regional and local governments must be
complemented by horizontal partnerships of stakeholders within cities. Coherence between national
policies and local implementation is crucial for effective urban health governance and health care.
The 2nd National Conference on “Urban Health: Opportunity for Multi Sector Partnership” aims to provide
the platform for a collective thinking of researchers, academicians, practitioners, professionals and
students, on changing times, reforming practices, reformulating theories , intriguing debates, amending
policies and issues concerning global and local interest.

Sub theme 1: Urban Health: Policy and Practices
Sub theme 2: Urban Planning
