Reclaimed wood adds a warm touch
Reclaimed wood has been a trend
in design for a few years now. It can
be seen in furniture, flooring and all
of those D.I.Y. projects on Pinterest.
Reclaimed wood is a product that
was actually something else in
another life, such as a barn door, old
flooring, crates and pallets or maybe
something pulled from an interesting
location like a bowling alley. These
pieces are usually well worn and
have a lot of character. When looking
at reclaimed furniture pieces, it
is important to ask if the piece is
“reclaimed” or “distressed”. There is a
difference between the two. In most cases,
distressed pieces are new, or have been
made to look worn on purpose. This may
include rubbing paint corners, applying a
glaze to the surface and then rubbing it
off in spots, or taking chains and nails and
applying dents and marks to the surface to
make it look worn out.
This is why I LOVE reclaimed furniture…
You are helping the environment. What is
going to happen to all of the furniture that
doesn’t suit our style anymore? It isn’t part
of the latest fashion or isn’t a wood that we
are currently interested in. These pieces
either make their way to a thrift store to sit
and collect dust or take up space in our
landfills. I love the idea of dismantling these
pieces and making something new. There
are many options available in stores, as well
as the option to try your hand at the project
yourself.
Reclaimed wood adds warmth and
texture to a space. There is reclaimed wood
furniture pieces to work into any style of
home and décor. The texture and weathered
look adds warmth and a softness to
any space. They can complement metal
elements in an industrial design, make
an interesting piece to an
otherwise polished décor or
add to the rustic nature of a
classic Westcoast home.
They are bullet proof!

Spring sales start early in the
Victoria BC Real Estate market
The trees bloomed early in Victoria, and so did local real estate. February was a
busy month with numbers closer to what we would expect to see in the spring season. 285 single family homes sold over the course of the month. We’ve not seen
that many single family homes sell in a February since 2008 when we tracked 295
transactions.
A total of 542 properties sold in the Victoria region this February, a 31.6% increase
compared to the 412 properties sold in the same month last year and a 54.4%
increase compared to the 351 properties sold last month in January.
Though buyers are already in spring purchase mode, the amount of available inventory may not be quite up to the pace. We continue to track the trend of higher
year-over-year sales, and lower year-over-year active listings that we started to
see in mid-2013. There were 3,480 active listings for sale on the Multiple Listing
Service at the end of February, 7.7% fewer than the 3,770 active listings in February 2014.
The Multiple Listing Service Home Price Index benchmark value for a single family
home in the Victoria Core this time last year was $549,700. The benchmark value
for the same home this month has increased by 1.33% to $557,000.
The Board certainly anticipated an increase in sales for spring, but the increase
we’ve seen exceeded my expectations. The early spring combined with available
low interest rates will likely create more demand for Victoria real estate as the rest
of Canada digs out from winter.
