Albertus Magnus High School Newsletter Joseph T. Troy, President/Principal Christopher Power, Assistant Principal March, 2015 Volume 55, Number 5 LORD, TO WHOM SHALL WE GO? Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan Lent is Mother Church’s annual memo to her children – us – to remember our baptism. Our supernational rebirth by water and the Holy Spirit gave us an identity as a child of God the Father, redeemed by God the Son, now a dwelling place for God the Holy Spirit. Our “old self” – a sinner, an orphan without a spiritual family, a captive of darkness and its prince, Satan – died, and, through baptism, we rose to new life with Jesus! It was our own Easter, a forecast of the one at our earthly death when, please God, we rise to eternal life. During Lent, we recall our baptismal identity. How? Well, for one, by accepting the Lord’s invitation to return to the innocence of our baptism by deeper prayer, penance, and charity. That’s why Lent is the best time for a good confession, since that sacrament restores the luster of our christening. Two, we are in solidarity with our catechumens, adults preparing for baptism at the Easter Vigil. They are in the final stages of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), and we share their eagerness for baptism. Three, we get ready to renew our own baptismal promises at the Easter liturgy, and be sprinkled with the newly blessed Easter water. Actually, we have ninety days of recalling our own baptism: forty days of Lent, as we once again die to sin, Satan, and selfishness through prayer, penance, and charity; and fifty days of the Easter Season – Easter Sunday until Pentecost – as we rejoice in the risen life of Christ. As the saints remind us, when God the Father looks at us, He sees us the way we were on the day of our baptism! I find it to be an unnecessary freezing of water” – Carl Reiner I am sure that a lot of folks can relate to comedian Carl Reiner’s sentiment after the winter we have had! School closings, activities cancelled, rescheduling nightmares abound. Yet, amid it all, we know deep down that one day we will look out of our window and see the small but mighty crocus make its presence known and assure us that spring is on the way! Our faith journey during Lent provides us a similar assurance, the knowledge that after 40 days of prayer and fasting we will once again experience the joy of Easter! During the past months our activities at Campus Ministry have been “rearranged” several times but we are blessed to share with you what we have done since my last writing. Our sophomore class completed their Midnight Run and as always this proved to be a powerful experience for all involved. Forty-two students traveled to Washington D.C.to stand for life Our Preaching Team continues to meet and discover new ways to preach the “Good News” both to and with our AM Family. One member of the Preaching Team was invited to preach at a special Lenten Vesper service at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse in Sparkill. Both Junior and Sophomore classes went on retreat with Tony Belizzii a well known youth speaker. The “Tuesday Night Thing” sessions were reactivated in February. Mass will be held for National Catholic Sisters Week was March 8 through 13th Stations of the Cross will be held for the student body on April 1st. As an Easter People we live in the knowledge of the love of our Risen Savior. May these remaining days of Lent give you an opportunity to draw nearer to him so that you may have a joy filled “Alleluia” in your heart on Easter! -submitted by Sr. Nancy Richter, O.P. The Lady Falcons basketball team has made Albertus basketball history by becoming the first team to go undefeated in the regular season. At 18-0, which included wins against a number of state powerhouse teams, the Lady Falcons began their march into the Sectional playoffs with opening round home wins against Hendrick Hudson and Yorktown. At the Westchester County Center, Albertus was able to defeat a strong willed Tappan Zee team to set up a matchup with rival Peekskill. For the past two seasons Peekskill has sent Albertus home in the championship round. This year however the Lady Falcons would not be stopped and took down their rival in dramatic fashion behind the tremendous support of the Falcon student cheering section. Senior Madison McGrath was selected to the All Tournament Team and freshmen Danielle LaRochelle was chosen as the tournament MVP for her outstanding play in both games. Behind the unmatched leadership of their four senior captains and the tremendous play of the entire underclass, the Lady Falcons hope to keep on soaring to an undefeated State Championship. The Falcon’s next game in the Regional Semifinals will be on Wednesday, March 11 at 7PM @ SUNY Purchase against Section IV champion Vestal High School. Albertus wishes the team the best of luck as they move forward toward their ultimate goal of becoming New York State Class A Champions.
