STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE 2R Woolooware Road North Woolooware NSW 2230 Website: www.woolooware-h.schools.nsw.edu.au TERM 1 WEEK 6B Phone: 9523 6752 Fax: 9527 3412 9 MARCH 2015 FROM THE SENIOR EXECUTIVE Welcome back from camp to year 7, year 10 peer support leaders and staff. Congratulations to Ms Chellin and Ms Norfolk for their outstanding organisation of this great 3 day activity for our new students. The activities were challenging and fun, while students made new friendships and consolidated the ones they had already formed. Students had opportunities to display our school values of developing respectful relationships, learning self discipline and organisational skills, doing your best and representing your school with pride. Well done, everyone! Congratulations to our SRC students, school captains, vice captains and SRC presidents who led sessions at the inaugural Leadership by the Bay program. This program was targeted at year 6 student leaders from our local primary schools: Burraneer Bay PS; Caringbah PS; Lilli Pilli PS; Woolooware PS. Mr Snudden (Principal LPPS) and Ms Holz (HT English WHS) ran the leadership day with support from Ms Mayne. We invited student leaders from Cronulla HS and Caringbah HS to join our student leaders. From all accounts, students enjoyed the activities and left the school with newly learnt skills and strategies to return to their own schools and make a difference as school leaders. This program will run again next year, when we will expand it to many more Shire primary schools. I'd like to thank our very supportive school community for your continued support of our wonderful school. Our Open Night was a great success! Thank you to staff and students who so proudly showcased our school to prospective students and their families. Last Sunday was International Women's Day, and we held our IWD breakfast for the third consecutive year. It was wonderful to see staff, student leaders, their mothers, School Director and our community partners attend. Thank you to Ms Moon and the hospitality students for another professionally catered for event. We hold this breakfast every year to remind ourselves of the great successes and progress women have made over the past 100 years especially in education and women's rights, as well as highlight the need to continue to move forward to end poverty for women in the world and to end domestic violence, which effects women in Australia as well as being a worldwide problem. At our school, we have a higher percentage of girls than boys and a higher number of female teachers than male. These issues are real and significant for us all. I'd like to thank all of the women and men who supported this initiative, because together we can effect change. MS SIOKOS PRINCIPAL 11/03/2015 Woolooware High School p. NEWS A NOTE FROM OUR P&C PRESIDENT Hi all, Our next P & C Meeting will be held on Wednesday, 18 March starting at 7:30 pm in the library. I would like to extend an invitation to all our new (and old) parents & caregivers to come along for the evening and meet your P & C. It is the night of the AGM but that will only take a few moments (you do not need to put your hand up for any positions). For those who have not attended our meetings before Woolooware High School have presentations from all faculties, with teachers attending our meetings. The faculty presentations enlighten us on the educational programs students are engaging in within each faculty and the types of teaching and learning undertaken. We saw 3D printers in action, artwork by the students as well as video and photographic creations by some very talented students. The P & C were put to the test by both the Science and Maths Departments with some interesting results. It’s been some time since P & C members had been to school! At the next meeting there will be an important presentation by Ms Wendy De Vos who is the year 9 Year Adviser, HSIE Teacher and involved in the student welfare programme. Wendy De Vos will be giving a presentation on “ MindMatters.” What is “MindMatters”? The best way to describe it is in Wendy’s own words:“MindMatters is a collaboration between the Department of Health, Beyond Blue and the Institute of Australian Principals. It focuses on improving the mental health and wellbeing of young people within school communities. MindMatters feeds into Woolooware High Schools Strategic Direction 3: Striving for excellence in school culture. The purpose of adopting the MindMatters approach is to provide a framework in building an inclusive and responsive school culture. The MindMatters framework helps us to adopt a coordinated, whole school approach to develop students ability to respond to challenges that life presents and maintain mental healthiness. The Welfare team will be planning events and sessions throughout 2015. Stay tuned as there will be opportunities for parents and caregivers to get involved. For more information please feel free to explore www.mindmatters.edu.au.” This will be an important presentation and I encourage you to attend and look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, 18 March. Best regards, MR MICHAEL LUCHI PRESIDENT, WHS P&C 11/03/2015 Woolooware High School p.2 NEWS ENGLISH FACULTY This week, English teachers opened their doors to our broader community, welcoming students in Years 4, 5 and 6 from local Primary schools.. Following our annual tradition, the English teachers recreated their favourite literary characters, by dressing up in costume. Making an appearance this year was Cruella De Ville (101 Dalmatians), Mary Poppins (Mary Poppins), Cleopatra (Antony Cleopatra), Dr Frankenstein, (Frankenstein), Huck Finn, (The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn), Isak Dinesen (Out of Africa), Jane Austen (Emma), Abigail Williams (The Crucible) and Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty). We showcased Kieran Mellor’s 2014 HSC Extension Two short film ‘Gezellig’ which achieved an impressive E4 (the highest band in 4 unit English); a variety of fiction and non -fiction novels, graphic novels and picture books from Years 7 – 12, with the cameo of Jane Austen sharing some of her important literary works and inspiration. We also demonstrated diverse samples of students’ writing and visual representations, with Dr Frankenstein’s interactive demonstration of ipad technology in the classroom, a huge hit with both parents and students. We would like to thank our Year 7 student helpers: Zoe, Zac, Emma, Kaylee, Emily and Chloe for their energy and enthusiasm on the night. They spoke confidently with many parents and students, demonstrating great leadership skills as well as their passion for English! All years will be commencing new directions in English this week. Year 7 are engaged in picture books, focusing on visual literacy and reading skills. Year 8 are exploring the ‘Real Story’ through non-fiction novels, discussing diverse cultures to broaden their sense of global awareness. Year 9 are absorbing the destructive nature of cyberbullying through the contemporary novel ‘Destroying Avalon’ by Kate McCaffrey, and Year 10 have opened the window to the bard, through close study of William Shakespeare’s plays; Hamlet, Macbeth, Merchant of Venice, King Lear, and Titus Andronicus. We would like to remind students from Years 9 – 12 that the My First Lesson competition is steadily approaching. To enter, students are required to submit short stories based on Alice Pung’s work and the winning entries will feature in an anthology of student work from across Australia. Please see Ms Mikhail in the English staffroom for more information. MRS R HOLZ HEAD TEACHER, ENGLISH FACULTY 11/03/2015 Woolooware High School p.3 NEWS YEAR 7 SPORT Year 7 Sport is well underway for 2015. Each week the students have been enthusiastic, they have demonstrated excellent teamwork and a competitive spirit. From what we have seen there may be some sport stars of the future! MISS CURTIN 11/03/2015 Woolooware High School p.4 NEWS YEAR 7 SPORT 11/03/2015 Woolooware High School p.5 NEWS SWIMMING CARNIVAL On a beautiful and sunny Wednesday in week 3 over 800 WHS students attended our school’s swimming carnival at Caringbah Pool. Large numbers of students competed in the B division races again, which had a large impact on our overall house point score. For those that are unaware, our B division races are for students who want to swim and collect points for their house. They don’t swim against our competitive racers – who participate in the A category to score points for Age champion and vie for places to swim in the Zone team. Congratulations again to our year 12 students who turned out in outfits to the theme of 80s aerobics. There was possibly far too much lycra than acceptable on display, but they had a good time and showed the rest of the school that the carnival isn’t just about who can swim the fastest on the day! The following students were age champions, congratulations on your performances! 12 yrs girl – Lilly 12 yrs boy – Zac 13 yrs girl – Sophie 13 yrs boy – Joshua 14 yrs girl – Ashley 14 yrs boy – Equal 1st Harry & Cameron 15 yrs girl – Lauren 15 yrs boy – Christopher 16 yrs girl – Equal 1st Jaimi & Keira 16 yrs boy – Nathan 17+ yrs girl – Samantha 17+ yrs boy – Ethan The carnival winners were Bukari on 1151 points, followed closely by Arana on 1146 points. Great effort! I really thought Duwari would go close to winning this year, but we finished a respectable 4th place behind Camira. The Woolooware swimmers placing first and second in each race then went on to compete at the Port Hacking Zone Swimming carnival on Monday, 23 February. We had 50 students swimming for the school and Woolooware was the champion school at the carnival! A great result for the school from these very talented swimmers. A full report on this carnival will be in the next newsletter.
