Purdue University is seeking applications and nominations for the Dean of Students in the office of Vice Provost for
Student Life.
Founded in 1869 in West Lafayette, Indiana, Purdue University is one of the nation's premier institutions with more than

Purdue has recently restructured three major administrative units--- Undergraduate Academic Affairs, Student Affairs,
and Housing and Food Services – into one division focused on the personal, professional and intellectual growth of
Purdue students. The new student-centered division is called Student Academic Affairs. This organization ensures a
more direct and positive impact on the quality of education at Purdue, reduces confusion for students and the campus
community, and creates greater operational efficiencies. The Office of the Vice Provost for Student Life is part of Student
Academic Affairs and emphasizes the lifelong impact of an educational experience through environments, people, and
programs that make a difference.
Reporting to the Vice Provost for Student Life, the Dean of Students is responsible for the strategic direction,
administration, and leadership of a team working in the following areas: Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities;
Student Health/Counseling and Psychological Services; Purdue Parent and Family Programs; Off Campus Students;
Fraternity/Sorority/Cooperative Housing Life; Advocacy and Support Center. By working with and representing the
interests of a diverse student body, the Dean works to establish a mutually reinforcing relationship between the
academic and non-academic areas of the University, championing the fact that student learning happens both in and out
of the classroom. The Dean of Students is an advocate for students and oversees functions that contribute to student
support and student success. This position provides broad leadership for Student Life including representing the Vice
Provost in her absence. Additionally, the Dean of Students serves as the primary decision maker for student-on-student
Title IX matters, oversees the behavioral intervention team and may serve on point for crisis response.
Qualified candidates will have a doctoral degree in higher education administration, counseling, related field or other
terminal degree.
Other key knowledge, skills and abilities:
Ten years of progressive experience in a higher education setting. Three years of department management required.
Experience within three or more areas within Student Affairs preferred. Proven track record of experience and
knowledge about crisis management and emergency preparedness in higher education, policy development, strong
leadership skills, significant administrative experience, including strategic planning and evaluation, budgeting, personnel
management and public relations. Highest levels of verbal and written communication skills are a must for responding to
and contributing to the overall stabilization and safety of the community. The chosen candidate must also possess
knowledge and skills to assess and evaluate services and programs.
