Starting April 1st, Malcolm Public Schools will begin opening
the Westfall gym and weight-room to district patrons and
option enrollment families. This “fitness-center” will be open
weeknights (when school is in session) from 5:00 PM-10:00
PM. If you are interested in using the fitness-center, please
complete the following:

News From Ms. Bak
In 3rd grade we just finished 3rd quarter. In Social Studies we just
finished our Harriet Tubman Unit and we are excited to start our
Economics and Communities Unit. We are going to be learning about
what it takes to run a community and how the 3 types of communities
compare. To kick start our Unit we will be using Popplite (an app on
our Ipads) to create a web diagram to show our comparisons of the 3
different types of communities, and the workers we could find in each
community. From there we will move on to the Economics portion and
learn about Goods/Services, Saving/Spending, and Natural Resources.
With our Goods/Services portion of our unit we will be able to set up
scenarios in our classroom and have the students interact as if they were
adults needing Goods/Services and how money comes into play. Our
3rd graders are always excited to participate in something new and they
get actively involved in our classroom!
Meet Ms. Weber
My name is Ashley Weber, and I am the new speech-language
pathologist for the 2014-2015 school year. I work with students in
kindergarten through twelfth grade as well as children ages birth to
five in the early childhood program. I am very excited to be a part
of the staff here at Malcolm and have enjoyed getting to know the
wonderful students and families!
Before coming to Malcolm, I worked in the Blair Community School
and Papillion-LaVista School districts. I received my Bachelor’s
and Master’s Degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and
d
graduated from Freeman High School in Adams. My family consistss of
my fiancé, Michael, and our two dogs, Sadie and Rylee. We are keeping busy
planning our wedding and building a new home. When we have free time, we enjoy
boating, watching Husker football, and playing sand volleyball.

READ ACROSS AMERICA

Read Across America, which is held March 2 on the birthday of the Late Dr. Seuss, was celebrated
the week of March 2-5 at Westfall. This annual celebration is sponsored by the National Education
Association. This reading event celebrates the fun and value of reading. Celebrations were held
throughout Westfall School. Halls and classrooms were decorated, and special clothing days
added to the fun. In the library media center the different K-6 classes were paired up and the
students read Dr. Seuss selections to each other. An Example-the 6th graders read to and with
the K classes.
We had Dr. Seuss bulletin boards, posters, bookmarks, plush characters, games, DVD’s to watch,
and fun sheets.
A Special Thank You goes out to the Pleasant Dale Legion Auxiliary for donating 5 Dr. Seuss
books along with 3 Lorax finger puppets; 400 bookmarks; 69 foam stickers; a Lorax floor
puzzle; 2 posters; Hallmark speaking Night before Christmas ornament; a Cat in the Hat
ornament; and a Lorax DVD. Thank you for your generous donation and for supporting Read
Across America.

PROJECTOR SPONSORS - Boosters are using these funds to grow the number and value of

We have a confirmed date from our driver's education instructor.
It will be held the week of June 1st-June 5th. Please call or
respond to this email and let the high school office know if you
are still interested and we will proceed with providing you with
registration information in the coming weeks. The classroom
time will be 8am-12:00pm. Driving times will be arranged. We
have not been informed of a cost but it is comparable to what
other companies in the area charge for driver's education.

Minutes – Board of Education
March 16, 2015
The Board of Education, School District 148, Lancaster County, Nebraska met in open public session at
7:00PM at the District Board Room, 10004 NW 112th St., Malcolm, NE on Monday, March 16, 2015 to
conduct normal and usual business of the District. Said meeting was advertised in advance in the minutes
of the February 16, 2015 meeting published in the February 19, 2015 issue of “The Clipper”, and the March
5, 2015 issue of “The Clipper”. Board members present were: Michelle Bice, William England, Andrea
Holka, Chandler Kramer, Craig Vanderkolk. Kevin Lostroh was absent. Administrators present were Ryan
Terwilliger, Greg Adams, Amber Dolliver. Chairman Vanderkolk called the meeting to order at 7:00PM and
noted that the Open Meetings Act is posted on the north wall of the Board Room.
Bice moved to approve the consent agenda with the updated bills. Seconded by Kramer. Voting by roll call:
YES – Bice, England, Holka, Kramer, Vanderkolk. NAYS – None. ABSENT – Lostroh. Motion 3-2015-14
passed.

England moved, seconded by Vanderkolk, that non-resident transportation fees be set as discussed and
illustrated for the 2015-2016 school year. Fees shall be: $275.00 per year if paid prior to starting student
pick-up or $2.00 per day. Charge for second child in same family at the same stop computed at $137.50
per year if paid prior to starting route pick-up or $1.30 per day. Charge for third child in same family at
same stop computed at $68.75 or $.65 cents per day. Maximum charge for any one family is $481.25 per
year if paid prior to starting student pick-up service. The following could result – the school will work with
the family to set up a semester or monthly payment plan or $30 Administrative Fee Charged and/or loss
of bus service. Voting by roll call: YES – England, Holka, Kramer, Vanderkolk, Bice. NAYS – None. Motion
3-2015-15 passed.
Kramer moved, to appoint the Superintendent as the Authorized District Representative for all ESU, Local,
State, and Federal Programs for the 2015-2016 School Year as well as authorize the Superintendent to
Submit MPS’s Title I Application. Seconded by Bice. Voting by roll call: YES – Holka, Kramer, Vanderkolk,
Bice, England. NAYS – none. Motion 3-2015-16 passed.

Bice moved, seconded by Holka, to adopt policy 1130: Community Relations—Fitness Center. The
Board discussed possible changes to the wording of the policy, and rules. The changes were made.
Voting by roll call: YES – Kramer, Vanderkolk, Bice, England, Holka. NAYS- none. Motion 3-2015-17
passed.
