Registration is now open at www.clubregistration.net Sign in or sign up and search for Musik Stadt Region (MSK) PCA events and there it is. Still only $20 to show off your car in a friendly competition and maybe take home an award. We had zero (0) Panarmera's and Cayenne's entered last year so if you own one of these and had come, you could have a First Place trophy on your bookcase. You will again take home a beautiful club t-shirt newly designed this year by Harmon Group and you can buy extra's when you register so come out and let's have some fun. We are still looking for volunteers and judges if you can help out also. Check out our updated calendar for more fun events, like our regular dinner and breakfast meetings, our April 11 tour to Florence AL and Uber Region Fest (sign up at www.trisslsportscars.com), May 2d tour to Tim Marino's Vintage Autocraft in Lebanon, and a very informative Tech Session at Porsche of Nashville on May 23d. Lots more events in our calendar so come out when you can. I still have a few concours t-shirts left over from last year's Concours so buy them before they are gone. Are you registered for PCA's 60th Anniversary Porsche Parade at French Lick IN? Over 800 club members and their families will be there, including 13 from Musik Stadt! I think we had 4 or 5 go to the Parade at Charlotte several years back so this is a record turn-out. There is still time to register for this June 21-27 spectacular. There will be a 60th anniversary display of every Porsche model from the past 60 years, plus the Concours, plus the attendees cars not entered in either event, so expect to see near 1,000 Porsche's, including those shipped in from PCNA and the Porsche Museum and private collections. Several of us are going up for 3-4 days, which includes the big Concours and TSD Rally just to mention a few. Since French Lick is only about 4-1/2 hours away, you could even do a day trip up and back on Monday to see the Concours. Please join us. So before you flip to the next page, go to trisslsportscars.com and register for Uber Region Fest - its free and expect to see at least 200 Porsche's gathered around the Trissl Sportscar showroom. Then go to www.clubregistration.net and register for our June 6 Concours in the Park. Then go to www.pca.org, sign in and register for the Porsche Parade. We hope to see you at all these great events, and at our next club meeting on April 14 at Carabba's in Green Hills. PAGE 4 SOLID GOLD APRIL 2015 The Eyes Have It By: D Badler I think it’s a safe bet that Giugiaro is having an impact across the VW product roster. And, with lead times what they are, we should see his influence, more and more, in the coming years. Which is why I read with great interest a story on Giugiaro that appeared recently in The Wall Street Journal. If you’re reading this, you may or may not know the name. But you certainly know the work. Giorgetto Giugiaro. He was named Car Designer of the Century in 1999, and inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2002. The founder of Italdesign, Giugiaro is credited with, among others, the original VW Golf, Passat and Scirocco, the DeLorean DMC-12, the Lotus Esprit, the Iso Rivolta and Grifo, the BMW M1, the Bugatti EB 118, the De Tomaso Mangusta, the Maserati Ghibli, Bora and Merak, and the Fiat 850 Spider. Along the way, he’s also sketched numerous Nikon cameras, Beretta firearms, Ducati motorcycles, and Seiko watches, as well as aircraft interiors, tractors, skis, golf clubs telephones and a dentist chair that’s supposed to actually be inviting. Why should we care? Because, aside from the fact that the man’s an acknowledged genius, the Volkswagen Group bought a 90.1% interest in his firm in 2012. It was a profile and interview with the man, now 77. The headline reads “Car Designer Giorgetto Giugiaro on Comfort, Curves and Drawing Tools.” And the subhead reads “The prolific designer discusses the best place to test drive a car and why the horse is the perfect animal.” Yes indeed, there it is, in the second paragraph… he’s now working exclusively with the Volkswagen Audi Group. In fact, at the recent Geneva Car Show, he unveiled the Gea concept car, which allows passengers to work, sleep and even exercise. Some highlights from the interview: The best place to test drive a car is “Sardinia. It offers gorgeous scenery, few people and little traffic….” The car he drives today is “a 2014 Audi A7 TDI. It is a very elegant car, precious and prestigious, a performance car… for rich people.” The designs that most impress him are “certain very common and anonymously designed objects - corkscrews, needles, scissors, forks, knives.” The purchase was made through VW’s Lamborghini sports car unit. PAGE 5 SOLID GOLD A common design pitfall is “to design something that has no other value than being something ‘new.’ It has no function, it is not design.” The most beautifully designed cities in the world are “Athens and Rome — real capitals of our Western civility. I think of the Acropolis in Athens, and the Colosseum in Rome.” The one thing you will not find in his home is “a single drawing or anything related to cars. Everybody is quite surprised at this. But I like to simply have art and rare objects around me at home. I work with cars all day long, every single day of my life.” A trend he doesn’t subscribe to is “cars with rounded lines. You lose a remarkable amount of space. Square lines and flat surfaces allow designers to use inner room the best, both for passengers, mechanics and luggage.” APRIL 2015 design that you may have spent forever to come up with? If an interior should be one of harmony and simplicity, how do you reconcile that with automotive touch screens, track pads, paddles and joy sticks? And I would slip one in, just for grins; how do you feel about Hollywood taking one of your iconic designs and twisting it into the centerpiece of a feature film? I like to think he’d probably chuckle, sip his espresso and note that the film made his design a worldwide icon. And it grossed millions. There’s no accounting for taste. When buying a car, it’s important to consider “its interior, apart from any pleasure you might get from the external shape and architecture of it. Important features of an interior are comfort, functionality, visibility and having enough space to move around.” The animal he most admires is “the horse. It is the most perfectly designed animal in terms of form, motion and function. I also admire the design of the shark and cheetah. They transform the concept of aggressiveness into harmony and speed.” O to participate in the interview with this great man. Here are a few of the questions I would have posed. How do you feel about all the add-on scoops, ducts, intakes, exhausts, spoilers and what-not that seem to clutter up a PAGE 6 SOLID GOLD APRIL 2015 2nd Annual Uber Region Fest, Florence AL, April 11 Join us for another great day with a drive down to Florence AL on Saturday, April 11 th to visit Trissl Sports Cars and see 100-200 Porsche’s in Trissl’s stable inside or parked outside. This year, they will have events starting at the Marriott Hotel on Friday night through Saturday, including driving tours, auto-crossing and of course People’s Choice Award. Lunch and music will help fill in our day there. We will depart from Cracker Barrel parking lot on Franklin Commons Drive (I-65/Hwy 96) at 8:45m sharp, so plan to arrive by 8:30am and with a full tank. If you plan to attend, please register so they will know how many to plan for lunch and such. Go to http://trisslsportscars.com and click on 2015 Uber Region Fest for into and registration. PAGE 7 SOLID GOLD APRIL 2015 KARS4KIDS Spring will be on us soon and on April 18, 2015, KARS4KIDS is hosting our Annual Car Show at the TN Baptist Children’s Home, Brentwood, TN Campus to benefit the children at the home. Last year’s event featured vehicles from places such as Middle TN, Kentucky, Georgia and Alabama. Your past sponsorship and support of this special event benefiting TN Baptist Children’s Home has been greatly appreciated and we look forward to having you join us again on April 18th. With your help we can once again provide assistance to the children, more specifically the summer activities fund, as well as a day they will remember forever. As you are aware all net proceeds from this event go to the summer activities program and not the general operating fund. This allows for the children at the Brentwood Campus to participate in activities that would otherwise not be possible because of a lack of funding. Since our funds are not part of the general operation budget it allows for these children to participate in extra activities, which may be a church trip, a special birthday party, a trip to the movies with friends, simple things all children want to do but at times funding is just not available. Your generosity and support over the years have made these events and memories possible. The event takes place on the beautiful TBCH Campus, 1310 Franklin Road, Brentwood, TN. Thanks for your support and we look forward to seeing you in April. Editor’s note: The picture below is from a past KARS4KIDS event. Please consider attending this very worthwhile event. Entries will be grouped into 12 classes and awards will be given for first-, second-, and third-place class winners in each category, as well as the People’s Choice and the Judge’s Choice. There also will be a special award for the car judged “exceptional” by Porsche of Nashville. If you pre-register for the Concours you will receive your event tee shirt with your car documentation at registration. If you do not pre-register you will not be given an event tee shirt! The event tee shirts will be available for sale at the Concours for $20 each. Cars will be evaluated based on specific criteria established by the PCA and published in the Parade Competition Rules (PCR) for the interior, exterior, storage compartment, and engine. Points will be deducted from 100 (perfect) against a standardized score sheet. Judges will be restricted to a standard time limit per car. Scores from the four areas will be totaled and the car with the highest score will win. MSK Concours’ judging is based on the assumption that the Porsche to be judged should be in the same state of fit, finish, and repair as the day it left the factory. The best maintained cars will be those whose owners have repaired, replaced, and/or touched up items and areas that have deteriorated from “as new” condition. It is the owner’s effort to maintain the car in pristine condition that will be judged—not perfection. The number of cars entered in each class will determine second and third place awards. Should more than one car have identical scores, the car(s) with the highest mileage will prevail. The Concours opens at 8:30 a.m. Judging begins at 10:30 a.m. Awards will be presented at 1:00 p.m. The entry fee is $20 and preregistration is encouraged. Lunch will be available for purchase. For more information, contact Mike Moody at 615-426-8188 or at president.mskpca@gmail.com. Callout Option Cleanliness will be judged only by visual inspection and not by touching the car. Our 60th Parade coincides with the Club’s 60th Anniversary Celebration, and we’re planning a series of special events at French Lick that will pay tribute to the cars and people who have made us the greatest single marque sports car club in the world. The 60th Parade will rightfully pay homage to the members and events of our past, but will also celebrate the Club’s newest enthusiasts who will shape our future. Parade Registration will open to PCA members on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 12 Noon EDT. The best place to read about Parade activities is http://parade2015.pca.org/ For the first time in recent memory, we have not one, but TWO resort properties awaiting your visit, both listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The 3,000 acre compound also features three golf courses and a world class spa at each facility. The French Lick Springs Hotel, established in 1832 and the larger of the two resorts, will be host to many of our familiar Parade activities. This city and the resort were named for an early French fur trading outpost and nearby salt lick. They recently completed a 600 million dollar restoration, bringing many comfortable present day amenities to surroundings that are authentic to the mid-19th century when the current facility was built. It is perhaps most known for their medicinal springs – “Pluto Mineral Water”. The actual spring is still part of their landscape, and the Gardens nearby will host our Welcome Party as well as various activities throughout the week. breathtaking Atrium will host our Concours and Victory banquets. Our Concours will be held a few steps through the covered bridge from the north end of the French Lick property. Rallies will depart from the grounds of the West Baden, and banquets will be held on both properties. The Parade 60th year museum, Hospitality, Goodie Store, seminars and many meetings will be at French Lick. Both resorts have lots of parking and car wash stations. For those of you who are new to Parade, you need to register for Parade on the PCA or Parade website before getting access to the codes necessary to hold your room. Therefore, we recommend browsing all necessary information prior to opening day so you’re ready to go. You’ll need to know what events you want to enter, as well as which hotel is your preference. The registration guide will be on the Parade website by March 1st. We will have our full complement of competitive events: Concours, TSD Rally, Autocross (at the nearby French Lick airport), and Tech Quiz. Add to that the Tours, Gimmick Rally, Golf Tournament, Art Show, Michelin Drive and Compare, Kids’ events, Tech Academy, cooking school, 5K run/walk, Parade of Porsches and more – you’ll be kept busy! Known as the 8th wonder of the world, and just down the street, you’ll find the West Baden Springs Hotel. This resort is home to the most breathtaking feature of our combined facilities this year; a free-span dome, the largest in the world until the Houston Astrodome was built in the 1960’s.
