PROFESSOR DANIEL PALMER
North west Cancer Research Professor and Honorary Consultant in Medical
Oncology, University of Liverpool
Professor Palmer graduated in Medicine from the University of Birmingham in 1995 having
intercalated in the Institute for Cancer Studies undertaking research investigating defective p53
responses in patients with the radio sensitivity disorder Ataxia-Telangiectasia, achieving a BSc
with first class honours.
After general medical training leading to MRCP (UK) he began Medical Oncology training. Within
this he was awarded a Medical Research Council Clinical Training Fellowship to undertake research investigating a novel
enzyme-prodrug cancer gene therapy strategy, this leading to his PhD and to publication of the first clinical experience of
this therapy in patients with primary and secondary liver cancer. He then completed specialist training, winning the
Association of Cancer Physicians McElwain Scholarship in 2005, funding a brief sabbatical at the Chinese University of
Hong Kong.
In 2005 he took up his current position of Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist and Honorary Consultant in Medical
Oncology at the University of Birmingham and University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust. In 2011, he took the Clatterbridge
Cancer Research Chair in Medical Oncology at the University of Liverpool.
His research interests relate to HPB cancers (pancreas, liver and biliary tract) and incorporate basic laboratory science,
translational research and clinical trials. His laboratory research is currently investigating novel therapeutic approaches to
the treatment of HPB cancers. This involves the identification of potential targets expressed by the cancers that may allow
recognition by the immune system using state-of-the-art proteomic and phosphoproteomic techniques, and investigating
strategies to stimulate an immune response against the cancer. In particular, he is investigating a molecule called CD40,
which is commonly expressed by HPB cancers and which, if stimulated in the appropriate way may induce cancer cell
death as well as promoting an anti-cancer immune response. He has established a portfolio of early phase clinical trials
and translational studies in this field as well as making significant contributions to multi-centre phase III trials and is the UK
lead for the SORAMIC trial.
