When the ArtROX! series first began, Discover Roxbury’s year-long collection of arts-related tours and events was focused primarily on Roxbury’s visual arts. Since then, it has expanded to include spoken word, musical performances, writing workshops, legal and businessdevelopment seminars, a cultural exchange trip to Barcelona, and the compilation of narratives which reveal the contributions of many people in this talented community. Contact us 617.427.1006 www.discoverroxbury.org info@discoverroxbury.org Now in our fifth ArtROX! season, we are excited about our newest endeavor: the ArtROX! Hub. After years of starts and stops, we finally have a dedicated space that will bring greater visibility to artistic creation, exploration, and experimentation in Dudley Square! The creative community and local entrepreneurs have important roles to play in Roxbury’s social and commercial growth. As such, we ask you to support them and we invite you to participate in arts and culture programming at the ArtROX! Hub and elsewhere around the neighborhood. As always, we greatly appreciate the support of the ArtROX! artists, sponsors, and partners. Your assistance motivates and enables us to continue elevating Roxbury’s excellence locally and beyond. Photos by Don West Artistic creation, exploration, and experimentation take center stage in the heart of Dudley Square! This one-year project provides residents and artists with greater visibility and accessibility to workshops, classes, and exhibitions designed to build skills, support professional and creative development, and add to Dudley Square’s commercial mix. HIGH NOTES OF JAZZ ROXBURY Once Boston’s ‘jazz mecca,” Lower Roxbury was the site of some of the most famous clubs and after-hours venues on the East Coast. It was also home to hundreds of Pullman Porters and the stomping grounds for many people who would later become prominent Civil Rights activists. Hear unique and complex narratives, many drawn from personal anecdotes and memories told by former musicians, residents, and club owners. Together they weave a facinating tapestry of this historic community and a forgotten period of Boston and American history.
