2014 Annual Report

2014 Annual Report
From the Founder
Dear friends, families and supporters,
The year of 2014 was a year of transition for Adam’s Camp.
We said goodbye to two valued program staff while welcoming two new highly proficient Program Managers to
the fold just before a busy summer season.
In March of 2014, the Board of Directors decided to launch
our Building Potentials campaign to construct a building
that will house a much needed commercial kitchen and
provide additional programming space for our Therapy
Camps and Adventure Camps at Snow Mountain Ranch
in Granby, CO. We enjoyed success beyond our dreams;
what was designed to be a three-year year campaign to
raise $1,000,000 resulted in raising more than $850,000 Adam Horney (the inspiration behind Adam’s Camp) and
his mother, Adam’s Camp Founder, Karel Horn
in gifts and pledges in less than one year!
ey.
Our latest Outreach site in New Hampshire opened their cabin doors in July to bring our number of national
programs to four, including our original Colorado site.
The summer provided another outstanding selection of programs for our campers. Enhanced training in the
spring helped to prepare therapists and counselors to provide still stronger programming for our campers
and families.
As always, our community support and the loyalty of our donors has strengthened our ability to serve more
campers with special needs and their families, and we are grateful.
And finally, I made the difficult decision to retire and turn the leadership of Adam’s Camp over to the next
generation of visionaries. I am excited to continue representing the organization as its Founder.
Our new Executive Director, Jay Clark, joined us in March of 2015 and we look forward to an exciting future for
Adam’s Camp. What an incredible honor it has been to serve alongside co-workers, families and those of you
who have given so generously so that our campers can thrive.
With gratitude,
Karel Horney
Executive Director/Founder

Building Potentials
Architect rendering of the Adam’s Camp building project at Snow Mountain Ranch
To meet the growing demand for our programs and to better serve our campers, Adam’s Camp launched a
capital campaign in partnership with the YMCA of the Rockies in 2014. This new building at Snow Mountain
Ranch in Granby, Colorado, will house a much needed commercial kitchen to meet the needs of our campers
and provide improved therapy space for our Pathfinder campers.
Campaign Summary:
• $2,000,000 = the cost of the building
• $1,000,000 = the commitment from the YMCA
• $850,000 = total commitments from Adam’s Camp as of 12/31/2014.
What this new facility will create:
• Safer, more secure therapy environment
• Greater therapist collaboration for strong outcomes
• Improved food service to meet campers’ dietary needs
• Potential for future growth
• Gathering place to build stronger community during camp
What was to be a three -year capital campaign
was 85 percent complete after six months
Therapy Programs
Intensive, multi-disciplinary therapy takes many forms at Adam’s Camp and in 2014, fresh ideas and activities
provided our Colorado campers many innovative opportunities for progress:
• 44 campers developed new skills in our Pathfinder Therapy programs (ages 4 to 8).
• 65 campers developed new social and living skills through Trailblazer Therapy (ages 8 and older).
• 17 infants and toddlers made gains at Denver-based Early Start (ages 1 to 4).
90 percent of the families participating in our Therapy
Programs reported the multidisciplinary therapy was
impactful for their child with special needs
“Our family has participated in Adam’s Camp for the past three years. Our 3-year-old son, who happens to have
Down syndrome, has benefited most from the Adam’s Camp integrated therapy model; however, his sister has
grown through the sibling program and camp environment. As parents, the additional support, resources and
respite that my husband and I have received is immeasurable. We have used Adam’s Camp to refocus our goals
with our son, gain insights into strategies to support these goals, connect as a family and believe it or not, have
a vacation. Our experience has been amazing and this is due to the dedicated, passionate staff that works
throughout the year to assure that families are supported. Families don’t go to camp for just a week; they are
welcomed into the Adam’s Camp Family forever.”
- Adam’s Camp Therapy Camp Family
Sibling and Family Programs
One of Adam’s Camp’s strongest beliefs is that when a family has a child with special needs, everybody in
the family has special needs. On top of our incredible therapy programs, another factor that elevates Adam’s
Camp is our programs for both parents and siblings. While children are receiving therapy, the rest of the family
is also involved:
• 108 parents of therapy campers benefited from the
following opportunities:
• Group activities and discussions.
• Resource presentations.
• Connections with other families and resource
providers.
• Respite from care-giving activities.
• 109 siblings of children with special needs enjoyed
their own camp experience for five hours each day
with outdoor activities, games, arts and crafts.
Adventure Camps
The Rocky Mountains are made for adventure and our Adventure campers took full advantage of our 2014
Adventure Camps:
• 250 campers rafted, hiked, zip-lined, tubed, swam and more at our summer Adventure Camps at Snow
Mountain Ranch.
Adam’s Camp Adventure Getaways are sleep-away weekends throughout the year that offer participants ages
16 and up with mild to moderate special needs opportunities to experience winter sports, urban and cultural
attractions, ranch living and more while growing lifelong friendships:
• 32 campers attended our first fall session at the Estes Park YMCA of the Rockies.
• Campers snowshoed, took a sleigh ride, ice skated, hiked, swam and much more at our second Winter
Weekend at Snow Mountain Ranch.
• 14 campers “Saddled Up!” for a western-themed weekend in April.
• 15 campers cheered on the Rockies after enjoying an Access Art project at “Meet Up Downtown” in
September.
In 2014, 386 campers ages 11 to 45
attended Adventure Camp programs
“My son has attended Adam’s Camp for 20 years. Adam’s Camp has built up his confidence and capabilities
beyond what was imagined. It is the highlight of his year. The counselors and volunteers are kind and very
thorough. His needs are met and his self-esteem is consistently bolstered at every opportunity. “
– Adam’s Camp Adventure Camp Parent
Volunteers
Volunteers are critical to operating Adam’s Camp. Volunteers give
their time to help with all facets of operating our camps, from working with therapists, counselors and campers to helping our camp
cook. The services our dedicated and passionate volunteers, who
range in age from 14-50, provided in 2014 included:
• 129 Volunteers working more than 12,000 hours for our
summer Adventure Camps.
• 45 Volunteers working more than 4,900 hours for our Pathfinder and Trailblazer summer camps.
• 37 Volunteers working more than 3,400 hours in our Siblings summer camp program.
I would emphasize that volunteering at Adams Camp is an experience unlike any other and that the relationships made and
lessons learned are truly life changing. “
– Adam’s Camp Volunteer
Our volunteers donated more than
24,000 hours of service in 2014
Adam’s Camp Outreach
With the goal of supporting more kids with special needs and their families, Adam’s Camp is spreading our
successful therapy programs throughout the country. Thanks to the efforts of passionate people in different
parts of the U.S., we have assisted with the development of Therapy Programs at Adam’s Camp Outreach sites
in Alaska, Nantucket and New Hampshire, with more to come. To learn more about these outreach sites, visit:
