CAM TODA
Dear Friends,
After a long winter and a stubborn spring, summer has arrived in Door County! We
hope that you are enjoying the warming temperatures and will include the Door County
YMCA program in your summer schedule. This Program Guide outlines Y activities for
the entire summer at both the Sturgeon Bay and Fish Creek program centers.
It is not too late to register for day camp at our new Lansing Avenue Program Center, Sturgeon Bay Center
or at our Northern Door Y. You can still sign up for multiple weeks, one week or several days each week
throughout the summer. I have always believed that camp is one of the very best programs the YMCA can
offer. When you combine great leadership with creative programming in the outdoors, good things will
happen. I hope we will have the opportunity to welcome your children to camp this summer.
Also please check out our learn-to-swim classes. We live in a place which is surrounded by water.
Everyone should have the opportunity to learn to swim. We would be pleased to provide lessons for you.
You are probably aware we will be opening our new program Center at 876 Lansing Avenue this
summer as our headquarters for Day Camp. After several months of renovations, we are ready to begin
programming. This facility is ideally located across the street from Cherry Blossom Park. We have never
had better facilities for our day camp program. Beginning this fall we will also expand our licensed
daycare program to this site. Join us for a community Open House on Saturday June 7th from 9:00 am
to 11:00 am. Please stop by and check out this great new facility.
I should also mention that in July you will begin to see earth moving activity north of the Sturgeon Bay
YMCA. Last year we purchased about ten acres of property adjacent north of the Y with a special gift from
Ellsworth and Carla Peterson. We have sufficient funding to excavate, grade and seed areas for a small
amphitheater for fitness classes and theatre activities. Additional sports
field and areas for future development to include; a community playground,
a synthetic field surface, sand volleyball courts, a multipurpose sports court,
splash pad and restroom. All future improvements will only be made as
funding becomes available. A site plan for this project is provided here. The
YMCA is pleased to provide this new Peterson Park project as a gift to the
community. We anticipate we will begin to use this new area in summer of
next year.
There are many things happening at the YMCA in Door County this summer.
I hope you will use and enjoy the Y this summer. Best wishes to you and
your family for a safe and enjoyable summer.
Sincerely,
Tom Beerntsen, President and CEO

EMPLOYEE WELLNESS PARTNERSHIP
Are you a business owner who would like to invest in the health of your
employees? The YMCA can help! Consider creating a partnership with
the YMCA to provide classes or services to your employees, or better yet,
consider contributing a portion of the monthly membership dues for your
employees...the Y will match your contribution by 50% up to $10.00 per
month! Healthier employees will save you money in lost earnings and
reduced insurance premiums. Contact Brenda Rosenstiel,
Workplace Wellness Director, at 743-4949 or by email at
brosenstiel@doorcountyymca.org for details!
WISDOM WEDNESDAY
The YMCA is proud to partner with Ministry Door County Medical Center and
Baylake Bank to bring you the opportunity to learn about local businesses,
how to improve your health, how to arrange flowers, be safe around dogs,
and many more topics. Wisdom Wednesdays are held at both centers
throughout the year.
• We’re taking the summer off...back in fall!

RIGHT FOOT FORWARD!
The Door County YMCA has classes to meet everyone’s fitness levels from someone who is new to exercise up to a seasoned
exerciser. However, with the expansive list of class offerings it might be difficult to figure out which class is right for you.
Look for the Right Foot Forward (r.f.f.) shoe logo throughout the program guide to find more information on the classes that are suited
for those who want to make the right start.
As always, if you have questions about finding the right class for yourself, visit the Welcome Center or sign up for a Jump Start session!

YMCA MEMBERS!
LIVESTRONG™ at the YMCA is a small-group exercise and movement program for the adult cancer survivor. This program empowers the
participants to improve their health and quality of life while diminishing the adverse affects of cancer or various cancer treatments. Each 12-week
session is comprised of classes that meet for 75 minutes, two times per week. All program participants receive a FREE family Y membership for the
session’s duration, with options to extend membership beyond the end of the program cycle. Class size is limited and pre-registration is required.
LIVESTRONG™ at the YMCA
• Improves energy levels and fitness capacity
• Enhances attitude and overall self-esteem
• Improves stamina for everyday tasks
• Builds supportive relationships in a comfortable setting
• Builds muscle mass and strength
• Increases flexibility and endurance
• Develops a fitness plan to continue practicing a healthy lifestyle
Program Leadership:
The primary goal of our instructors/trainers is to provide a supportive environment for class participants. Our Y staff is trained and responsive to the
changing variety of emotional and physical concerns that cancer survivors face. Each member of our staff team is a Y personal coach and certified in
the Stanford University’s “Living Strong, Living Well” program, which includes training in the elements of cancer, post-cancer exercise, nutrition and
supportive cancer care.
What participants are saying about LIVESTRONG™ at the YMCA:
“This program has helped me a great deal. My stamina is better - I notice it every day. Everything I do is a little easier because I’m getting stronger.”
“I want to continue as a member of the Y because they have helped me build up my confidence again after surviving cancer.”
Criteria for Class Participation:
This course of instruction is recommended for anyone who has finished cancer treatment; participation by those in treatment will be handled on a
case-by-case basis. Express interest by phone, in person at the Y, or by email at livestrong@doorcountyymca.org.

PARKINSON EXERCISE
• In Sturgeon Bay
EXERCISING WITH PARKINSON DISEASE & PARKINSON RELATED SYNDROMES
An exercise group geared toward individuals with Parkinson Disease (PD) and Parkinson Related Syndromes (PRS) may be just what you are looking for!
These exercise groups are designed and led by a physical therapist with experience working with individuals that
have PD or PRS. Financial assistance is available at the Y.
The hour long class is split into half-hour sessions. The first 30 minutes will be spent on stretching with a focus on
trunk mobility. During the other 30 minutes, participants will walk on a treadmill. The theory behind this program
is that improved trunk mobility combined with an aerobic conditioning program should lead to improvement or
maintenance of functional activities used in everyday life. New participants are always welcome. Wear comfortable clothes, athletic shoes and bring a
water bottle to class. If you have any questions please call Carl (PT), or Shawn (PTA), at Ministry Door County Medical Center Rehab Services at
(920) 746-0410.
A physical therapist evaluation is required prior to registration (in most cases this evaluation is covered by Medicare or
insurance). Contact Ministry Door County Medical Center Rehab Services for information (920) 746-0410.

SUPER SWIM • In Northern Door
Parents.....our Super Swim lessons are fantastic! Each week of Super Swim includes 5 daily lessons,
greatly increasing your child’s understanding and learning of swimming skills. Many children have
been able to move to higher levels after 1 week of lessons! You may find your child completing
several levels over the course of one summer.
•
•
Because the children do progress fast, we ask that you wait until Thursday of your current Super Swim session
before registering for the next session.
Classes meet weekly, Monday through Friday!

PARKINSON EXERCISE • In Northern Door
EXERCISING WITH PARKINSON DISEASE & PARKINSON RELATED SYNDROMES
An exercise group geared towards individuals with Parkinson Disease (PD) and Parkinson Related Syndromes (PRS) may be just what you are looking
for! These exercise groups are designed and led by a physical therapist with experience working with individuals with PD or PRS.
Thirty minutes will be spent on stretching, with a focus on trunk mobility. The other thirty minutes, participants will walk on a treadmill. The theory
behind this program is that improved trunk mobility combined with an aerobic conditioning program should lead to improvement or
maintenance of functional activities used in everyday life. New participants are always welcome. Please set up an initial evaluation with
Carl, PT, or Shawn, PTA, at Ministry Door County Medical Center Rehab Services (920) 746-0410. Class is held at the YMCA Northern Door
Program Center, and Carol Ash is the physical therapist who leads the class.
A physical therapist evaluation is required prior to registration (in most cases this evaluation is covered by Medicare or
insurance). Contact Ministry Door County Medical Center Rehab Services for information (920) 746-0410.

MIND/BODY
GENTLE MINDFUL
MOVEMENT
• Ages 13+
(Sturgeon Bay)
Mindful movement allows us to pay attention
to what is happening in the body as it is in motion.
Slow motion that is! What better way to experience
awareness and relaxation than with this simple, gentle
movement – connecting the body with the breath.
Moving slowly through gentle postures, helps us become
aware of what we are actually feeling and experiencing
in each part of the body as we go.
This non-judgmental practice does not require one to be
flexible, or twist into a pretzel. It is about accepting the
body just as it is. Taking time to care for yourself in this
way will leave feeling refreshed and invigorated, and..
not sore the next day!

in the pool by an adult.
• All youth are subject to swim testing and applicable restrictions based on swimming ability which may include an adult
accompanying the child in the water.

the Whirlpool.
Locker/Shower Facilities

the family locker rooms. Youth ages 13 and under must use the
