THE Y... IT’S WHERE MY FRIENDS ARE 2014 Summer Session DOOR COUNTY YMCA Visit us at www.DoorCountyYMCA.org 1 M O O LL R ER I T S S UMM P ’ E S R U THE MANY .SIGN IN S.. Y! P CAM TODA Dear Friends, After a long winter and a stubborn spring, summer has arrived in Door County! We hope that you are enjoying the warming temperatures and will include the Door County YMCA program in your summer schedule. This Program Guide outlines Y activities for the entire summer at both the Sturgeon Bay and Fish Creek program centers. It is not too late to register for day camp at our new Lansing Avenue Program Center, Sturgeon Bay Center or at our Northern Door Y. You can still sign up for multiple weeks, one week or several days each week throughout the summer. I have always believed that camp is one of the very best programs the YMCA can offer. When you combine great leadership with creative programming in the outdoors, good things will happen. I hope we will have the opportunity to welcome your children to camp this summer. Also please check out our learn-to-swim classes. We live in a place which is surrounded by water. Everyone should have the opportunity to learn to swim. We would be pleased to provide lessons for you. You are probably aware we will be opening our new program Center at 876 Lansing Avenue this summer as our headquarters for Day Camp. After several months of renovations, we are ready to begin programming. This facility is ideally located across the street from Cherry Blossom Park. We have never had better facilities for our day camp program. Beginning this fall we will also expand our licensed daycare program to this site. Join us for a community Open House on Saturday June 7th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Please stop by and check out this great new facility. I should also mention that in July you will begin to see earth moving activity north of the Sturgeon Bay YMCA. Last year we purchased about ten acres of property adjacent north of the Y with a special gift from Ellsworth and Carla Peterson. We have sufficient funding to excavate, grade and seed areas for a small amphitheater for fitness classes and theatre activities. Additional sports field and areas for future development to include; a community playground, a synthetic field surface, sand volleyball courts, a multipurpose sports court, splash pad and restroom. All future improvements will only be made as funding becomes available. A site plan for this project is provided here. The YMCA is pleased to provide this new Peterson Park project as a gift to the community. We anticipate we will begin to use this new area in summer of next year. There are many things happening at the YMCA in Door County this summer. I hope you will use and enjoy the Y this summer. Best wishes to you and your family for a safe and enjoyable summer. Sincerely, Tom Beerntsen, President and CEO 2 DON’T MISS THIS..... EMPLOYEE WELLNESS PARTNERSHIP Are you a business owner who would like to invest in the health of your employees? The YMCA can help! Each 12-week session is comprised of classes that meet for 75 minutes, two times per week. All program participants receive a FREE family Y membership for the session’s duration, with options to extend membership beyond the end of the program cycle. LIVESTRONG™ at the YMCA • Improves energy levels and fitness capacity • Enhances attitude and overall self-esteem • Improves stamina for everyday tasks • Builds supportive relationships in a comfortable setting • Builds muscle mass and strength • Increases flexibility and endurance • Develops a fitness plan to continue practicing a healthy lifestyle Program Leadership: The primary goal of our instructors/trainers is to provide a supportive environment for class participants. Our Y staff is trained and responsive to the changing variety of emotional and physical concerns that cancer survivors face. Each member of our staff team is a Y personal coach and certified in the Stanford University’s “Living Strong, Living Well” program, which includes training in the elements of cancer, post-cancer exercise, nutrition and supportive cancer care. What participants are saying about LIVESTRONG™ at the YMCA: “This program has helped me a great deal. My stamina is better - I notice it every day. Everything I do is a little easier because I’m getting stronger.” “I want to continue as a member of the Y because they have helped me build up my confidence again after surviving cancer.” Criteria for Class Participation: This course of instruction is recommended for anyone who has finished cancer treatment; participation by those in treatment will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Express interest by phone, in person at the Y, or by email at livestrong@doorcountyymca.org. • • • • Enroll in the FREE program by visiting with Christine Webb-Miller at the Y in Sturgeon Bay.
