If one of your goals for the new year is to use up your fabric scraps, the
Joseph's Pinwheel Quilt is a great way to start. It was designed for all skill
levels. This is the first of several stash-busting quilt patterns that I will be
sharing online this year. Less scraps = more space for new fabrics! Dig out
those bins full of small pieces of fabric and let's get started!
Please read through all instructions before beginning.
When you cut your fabrics for the Pinwheel Blocks, label them Fabric A,
Fabric B and Fabric C. This is an important step, as you will discover when
you begin to build your blocks.
All seams are 1/4"
WOF = Width of Fabric
HST = Half Square Triangle
QST = Quarter Square Triangle
FABRIC REQUIREMENTS:
Finished blocks: 11" x 11"
PINWHEEL BLOCKS (These measurements are for 1 block. You will be
making a total of 20 blocks).
Fabric A:
(1) fabric scrap large enough to cut (2) 4 7/8" squares.
Fabric B:
(1) fabric scrap large enough to cut (1) 6 3/4" square.
Fabric C:
(1) fabric scrap measuring at least 15" x 6 3/4"
Fabric D: Border #1 and Sashing Strips - 1 1/4 yd
Fabric E: Border #2 and 2" Corner-Stones in Border #1 - 1 1/2 yds
CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS:
Fabric A:
Cut (2) squares 4 7/8" x 4 7/8". Cut once on the diagonal to make (4)
half-square triangles. Remember to label the HSTs as Fabric A.
Fabric B:
Cut (1) square 6 3/4" x 6 3/4". Cut diagonally in both directions to make
(4) quarter-square triangles. Label the QSTs as Fabric B.
Fabric C:
Cut (1) square 6 3/4" x 6 3/4". Cut diagonally in both directions to make
(4) quarter-square triangles. Label the QSTs as Fabric C.
Cut (4) 2" x 6 1/2" rectangles.
Fabric D:
For Sashing: Cut (8) 2 1/2" x WOF. Sub-cut into (31) 2 1/2 x 11" strips
For Border #1: Cut (6) 3 1/2" x WOF strips
Fabric E:
For Corner-Stones: Cut (1) 2 1/2" x WOF. Sub-cut into (15) 2 1/2" squares.
For Border #2: Cut (8) 2 1/2" x WOF strips.
MAKING THE PINWHEEL BLOCKS
Step 1.
With right sides together, sew (1) QST Fabric C to (1) QST Fabric B to
make Unit 1. Press seam toward Fabric C. Make 4.

Step 2.
With right sides together, sew (1) 2" x 6 1/2" rectangle Fabric C to (1) HST
Fabric A to make Unit 2. Press seams toward Fabric A then trim edge of
rectangle even with triangle. Make 4.

Step 3.
With right sides together, sew Unit 1 to Unit 2 to make Unit 3. Press seams
toward Unit 2. Make 4

Step 4.
Refer to photo below for how to rotate the Units to create the top and bottom
parts of the Pinwheel Block. With right sides together, and matching diagonal
seams at corners of Units 1 and 2, sew (2) of Unit 3 together to make the top
half of the Pinwheel Block. Sew last (2) of Unit 3 to make bottom half of the
block, then sew the (2) pieces together to create the finished block. Finished
blocks should measure 11" square. Make 20.
Step 5.
Lay your blocks out into (5) rows with (4) blocks in each row, then with right
sides together, sew a 2 1/2" x 11" sashing strip (Fabric D) to the right side
of Blocks 1, 2 and 3 of each row. Join rows using an accurate 1/4" seam.
Step 6.
Sew a 2 1/2" Corner-Stone block (Fabric E) to one end of (12) sashing strips.
Referring to quilt photo for placement, join 4 sashing strips to create sashing
rows. You should have a corner-stone block in the horizontal sashing strips
between Blocks 1 & 2, 2 & 3, and 3 &4 of each row. Make 4.
Step 7.
Sew horizontal sashing strips to the bottoms of Rows 1, 2, 3 and 4, then sew
rows together to complete the quilt top.
Step 8.
Add Border #1. With right sides together, join (2) 3 1/2" x WOF strips of
Fabric D. Make 2. Trim border on one end to get even edge and with right
sides together, sew on to one side of the quilt top. Trim off leftover border
even with bottom edge of quilt. Repeat with remaining Border #1 piece to add
border to the other side.
Step 9.
Add Border #2. Repeat Step 8 using Fabric E strips that were cut to 2 1/2" by
WOF.
Step 10.
Add backing and batting and quilt as desired.
