PHOTO BY BENJAMIN LAIRD ARTS & PHOTO. HELP BRING NEW ARTISTIC MANAGING DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE NEW WAYS OF WORKING Since we started the Silver Commission program in 2006, we have premiered a number of our commissions including The Patron Saint of Stanley Park by Hiro Kanagawa, Do You Want What I Have Got? A Craigslist Cantata by Veda Hille, Bill Richardson and Amiel Gladstone, and now we have Farewell, My Lovely by Aaron Bushkowsky. When Rachel Ditor, our Literary Manager, talked to Aaron about a commission, they discussed adaptingone of the Raymond Chandler detective novels. From a limited list that were available for adaptation, Aaron chose Farewell, My Lovely. Soon after, Craig Hall, of Vertigo Theatre in Calgary became interested, and as Craig had worked for us previously on another commission (directing Dennis Foon’s adaptation of the Michael Ignatieff’s work Scar Tissue), a collaboration seemed a good way for Aaron’s work to be seen not only in Vancouver, but also in Calgary (which has led to another adaptation for Aaron at Vertigo Theatre). The commission program is one way for us to ensure that the new work we are developing is work that we are interested in pursuing. We control the development trajectory, which allows us to have input early on in the creative process. Of course, every playwright has a different way of working; a different way of responding to dramaturgical input. Recently, I attended a conference on Volunteerism and the Arts, at which I met a large number of people who are dedicated to the idea of volunteering. Like, playwrights, each has a different way of working, but the core of the conference was some of the issues that we deal with on a daily basis, including the ongoing evolution of artists, the perspective on change and adaptation that arts organizations face, the importance of volunteers for community engagement, and the changing landscape of Vancouver where we expect volunteers to take up the challenge when the public sector is no longer able to cover all situations; all emergencies; all activities. This change is a shift from what we are used to, but with more and more people offering their services as volunteers, it does seem logical that we might expect more from them. In Great Britain a concept called Big Society was set up by the Conservative Government to counter the effects of the recession and the declining ability of the central government to solve all problems. Although volunteers cannot deal with everything thrown at them, there is a sense that a shift is taking place, and the conference I attended was definitely a start in relation to volunteering for the arts. If you are interested in joining our volunteer team, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Katia Tynan at ktynan@artsclub.com. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE HERE’S TO THE FUTURE! When I first started at the Arts Club in 2003, we were getting ready to premiere a new play—just like we are today with Farewell, My Lovely. The play was The Matka King and the playwright was Anosh Irani. Anosh had come from UBC to work as an intern for Bill Millerd, our Artistic Managing Director, and Bill saw in him an understanding of this art form and a desire to write for it. And write Anosh did. So we premiered his first play, our 63rd new Canadian play premiere at the Arts Club. It dealt with some difficult subject matter, so it struggled a bit to find its audience. But that wasn’t the point of doing it. We’re a not-for-profit theatre company and it’s our job to support new art, new artists, and new work. If all we cared about was how a show might sell, then we couldn’t premiere the number of new shows we do. And what would we lose from that? A lot. Anosh went on from writing The Matka King to writing two more plays that we produced – Bombay Black and My Granny the Goldfish. He has also since written three acclaimed novels including The Song of Kahunsha. That’s a startling artistic output from the young man that once sat on Bill’s office floor sorting through scripts. And it’s something to celebrate. As is this play. It’s a new Canadian play. It has a script adapted from Raymond Chandler’s original novel by local playwright Aaron Bushkowsky. And it’s a Silver Commission, a programme we started in 2006 to support local playwrights by commissioning them to write for our stages. And that helps keep artists like Aaron living and breathing members of this community—telling our stories and contributing to our Canadian culture (the development of new work is largely driven by donations and we are most appreciative of our donors who help us fund commissions—thank you!) In all, we’ve developed and premiered over 90 new Canadian plays in our 51 years; that’s an average of almost two per season. The full list is in the back of the Arts Club Anthology that is available for sale at chapters.ca (and which, incidentally, includes The Matka King). It’s a track record to be proud of, and there is much more to come. Because a theatre company isn’t truly a theatre company if it isn’t contributing to the future of the art form. So here’s to the future! Peter Cathie White Executive Director Arts Club Theatre Company One appetizer per voucher with purchase of entree. Maximum value $11.00 Expires Ma\, 2015 9 A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT I’ve never written an adaptation before. I didn’t know if I could, mainly because I like to think I’m a playwright who has an original style who can’t and won’t adapt. But after reading Chandler’s Farewell, My Lovely I quickly realized that I had much in common with Mr. Chandler— particularly with his prose style. I’m also a novelist and I found his description and rhythms somewhat similar to my writing. There was something about the poetry of his words that stood out and his dialogue. Further, there was something incredibly appealing with his tragic characters who are always drawn to the dark side. Me too. Maybe it’s something to do with my German and Russian roots— or my poetry, or even my dark sense of what’s funny, but I loved his book and I actually found writing the adaptation completely enthralling. So much of Chandler’s writing exposes our humanity, our frailty, our need to find love and connection when— we think—the world is conspiring against us. There’s hope in Chandler’s world, but you will find it in the edges, in the fleeting moments of love gone wrong and life ending prematurely. It’s the love we all dream about. ~ Aaron Bushkowsky A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR Phillip Marlowe is the archetypical noir hero. His Los Angeles is populated by con men, weirdos, mobsters, manipulative women, gamblers, drunks, and a bevy of other despicable characters. In this dark world Marlowe is the guy with integrity, despite a drinking problem and enough self-loathing to send most men to an early grave. The loneliness, the cynical jibes, the battered romance, the love/hate relationship with the establishment, the grey line between good and evil; Chandler used these noir tropes to masterful effect and shaped some of the genre’s classics. It has been a pleasure to partner with Aaron and the Arts Club in ushering one of these classics to the stage. ~ Craig Hall, Artistic Director of Vertigo Theatre GENTLE REMINDERS n It is very important to turn off alarms, phones, and beepers for the duration of the show. If you are concerned about missing an emergency call, please leave your name or device and seat location with an usher and we will alert you if a call comes through. n Please wait to discuss the show at intermission or after the show ends. (Even whispers carry!) n Please refrain from eating or unwrapping candy and gum in the theatre, as it is a distraction for others. n If you have a complaint about another guest, please tell the Guest Services Manager rather than approaching the person yourself. Aaron thanks his fantastic agent Colin Rivers of Marquis Entertainment (Toronto) for his guidance and work. Aaron also thanks Rachel Ditor (and Bill Millerd, and the Arts Club) for the idea and the eventual commission (and production) to write this play, and also Craig Hall of Vertigo Theatre who directed it—and, of course, the designers and actors who made the show come to life. He also thanks Raymond Chandler for his incredible words and for his wonderful palate of crazy, complicated characters. They are, indeed, lovely. When the re-development of Vancouver’s False Creek area began in the late 1970s, the company was given the opportunity to build a theatre on Granville Island. By the time the Arts Club held the gala opening of the Granville Island Stage in October 1979, the Arts Club was a fully professional company presenting its 16th season of plays. The company is now in its 51st season.
