FROM FATHER VINCENT:
In the beginning of the gospel lesson assigned for the first Sunday of
June (Mark 3:21) people were talking about Jesus. Imagine what
they were saying. Might they be saying that Jesus is so easy going,
comfortable to be around, and a person who would never rock the
boat or cause any trouble? Might they be saying he is such a nice
guy who never makes people feel uncomfortable by talking about
God or challenging the status quo? Absolutely not, that is not what
they are saying at all. Instead they are saying that he is out of his
mind. Members of his own family were saying that he is out of his
mind. What does Jesus say about his family? He says that his true
family members are those who do the will of God (Mark 3:35).
I think people might say about us at Ascension that we are out of
our minds. We are moving forward in confidence that we are here
to do God’s will. We are investing a lot of money in order to make
our facility energy efficient and inviting. We are following the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to do more and more rather than less and
less. We are inviting the children of the community to join us for
lunch throughout the summer from 11:30-12:30 Monday through
Friday from June 15-August 14. We are inviting all of the community
to join us for Frankfurter Fridays beginning on June 12 from 6-7. We
are also inviting the community to join us for our Summer Concert
series on the second Sunday of the month June through September
which includes lunch at noon and a concert from 1-2pm.
Yes, people may say we are out of our minds. Let’s hope they do.
For then we will be more like Jesus himself, striving to build the
kingdom of God by making a place where all are welcome and fed.
We will be his family expecting to encounter him in the stranger,
hoping to be challenged and changed.

July NEWS IS DUE BY
June 20th
News from Gil Newlands, Senior Warden:
Used to be that at churches we all took it easy during the summer months.
The choir was on recess, the Rector was away at his cottage at Chautauqua or
the Adirondacks, many parishioners were away on summer vacations or at
their summer places, and it was, in general, a slow time of year. For some of
us, who’ve been around here for a while, things slowed down at Ascension
too.
Well, I mean to tell you that isn’t happening this year. We have an active and busy summer planned.
There will be Frankfurter Fridays again on the front lawn every other week – you know the drill –
and free summer lunches for neighborhood kids during the week. I hope you’ll try to come to the
Frankfurter Fridays for hot dogs, lemonade, and games, and even better if you can volunteer to
help set-up, serve or clean-up. The summer lunch program from June through August will help to
insure that kids in the neighborhood (up through age 18) will be able to have a good lunch Mondays through Fridays. I think volunteer opportunities are still available; please contact Margie Hildebrandt for more information.
Later on during the summer – starting June 14 – there will be a series of four concerts after the
10:30 service, some of which will be on the front lawn. For those planning to attend, there will also
be a luncheon following the service. Our first concert will be with Anna Risch and a string quartet.
Anna is a very talented young lady and a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace and helps out with our Sunday School program during the year. I hope in particular you will plan to attend this concert.
Finally, I hope you’ll take a look at some of the improvements on the Ascension campus. Painting
and other long over-due repairs are being made to Ascension House, most of the new windows are
in place, on the east and west gables the wood trim on the church building itself will be painted
within the next few weeks, the west doors have been beautifully refinished, and work is well under
way on the new air conditioning system.
Yes, it’s going to be a busy summer at Ascension. I hope you’ll be part of this exciting time in the life
of our parish.
Sincerely,,
Gil Newlands, Senior Warden

Community Meal
The community meal this month will be on Thursday, May 8th.
Our dessert will be Chocolate cake with white icing. Let Margie
know if you would be willing to help out by baking! I will need 3
bakers. Thanks.
Now that we are getting free fruit/veggies from the Foodbank to
distribute to our clients, I will need help sorting and bagging the
food from 1:30 till we’re done @3:30ish
Thank you! The clients are so appreciative of the food bags!
As we know, many hands make work light! Margie
Needed:
If you get plastic grocery bags, our Community Meal is going to begin passing
out free food from the Foodbank. Therefore we will need bags to put it in. Look
for the recycling box that says COMMUNITY MEAL in the undercroft.. We could
also use extra hands to pass out the food!
If you would like to help fill those bags let Margie know. They will be filled
right before the community meal around 3:00.

To take the month of JUNE
And spend our gardening efforts
to cleaning up the growth along the west fence (backing
up along Paul’s Garden Center).
This area needs a complet clean-up between the trees, then
trimming the trees, followed by the mulching.
Any amount of time you have available and could spend on this
project would be great.
Building and grounds will be working on the yeard on the first
Saturday in June to get started (a worthy church effort)

Update on Planting for Tomorrow
We have had great success in our capital campaign which is called Planting for Tomorrow. Because of generous pledges to the campaign we have been able to secure a loan
to install a new energy efficient heating and cooling system throughout the building
and to put a new much needed roof on Ascension Hall. We have also been able to install twenty-five new energy efficient windows, in the offices, Guild Room and three on
the east side of the building. These are major accomplishments and we have reason to
rejoice and celebrate.
However, we have done these things only on the good faith that those who have
pledged will follow through with their pledges otherwise the parish will be in default.
Please make every effort to follow through with your pledge. If you are behind please
call and make new arrangement to catch up.
Also, if you have not made a pledge or realize that that you may be able to contribute
more than you originally thought, please do so either by contacting Father Vincent or
by making a check to Ascension indicating in the memo that it is for the capital campaign. We still need new windows in Ascension Hall and elsewhere as well as need to
address damage to the woodwork and floor in the Guild Room before it can be painted
and re-carpeted.
Thank you for your sacrificial generosity and support.
