It is hard to believe that we are almost half way through our fiscal year.
We have had some wonderful events already and more great ones on the
horizon. One of my goals for this year is to engage new members and
re-engage our existing ones. The attendance and enthusiasm at our monthly
meetings, our holiday celebration (at which we announced the Orange
County Ronald McDonald House as our charity of choice for this year),
our recent industry partner forum, our kick off mixer for our new mentorship program (iDOD) and our
annual student career day are all strong indicators of membership interest and engagement. I love to see
the networking that happens when we gather, which is the whole point of why we exist, right?
Last fall we sent out a member survey and I want to assure you that we are taking your feedback seriously
and implementing changes to make sure that we continue to provide value and a return on your membership investment. This year’s Industry Partner Expo is on the calendar for May 6th at the Pavilion @ Hotel
Irvine and will take the place of May’s general meeting. The committee is revamping the entire program
to make it easy for all to participate, have fun, dine and network in a relaxed social environment. ASID Orange County Design Expo “Re-Imagined” will be an evening you won’t want to miss. Industry Partners,
there are still table tops and limited booths available. Designers, we will have a well-rounded and informative educational program planned for you as well. Please save the date and register as soon as the
calendar link goes live. You will be notified via e-blast. It will be a fun-filled evening among friends and
its’ success depends on participation of all members. If you have industry partner contacts that you would
like to introduce to our organization, the Expo will be a great opportunity for them to showcase their products and offerings and expand their reach to designers and other industry professionals. Please contact
the office for any questions.
Chairs for Charity will be our next big event after the Expo. We are seeking 25 designers to design oneof-a-kind chairs to be auctioned off at an evening gala event, with net proceeds to benefit the Orange
County Ronald McDonald House summer renovation project. Look for details soon! If you know you are
already interested in participating, please contact Leora Cane, Chairs for Charity Chairperson
(lcanedesigns@cox.net) to have your name added to the interest list. Participating designers will have
their chairs on display for auction at an evening reception with an anticipated 250-300 people in attendance and also published in Modern Luxury Interiors Magazine.
I want to thank you for supporting our chapter in the many ways that you do. Your attendance at our
events, your support of the leadership team, your willingness to step in and volunteer your time, your
support and kindness to each other are many of the reasons that make the Orange County Chapter one
of the leading chapters nationally. We are progressive in our thinking, aggressive in our goals but the
balance lies in the warmth and welcoming culture of our members. Let’s continue to make 2015 a fun and
profitable year in business AND in relationships!
Warm regards,
Gigi Harris, Allied ASID

Dear Colleagues,
The holidays are now behind us and we are looking forward to a healthy, happy, and
prosperous 2015. The first quarter of my term as President Elect has been exciting
and enlightening under Gigi’s strong, enthusiastic leadership. I can see the Chapter
headed for a successful year with all of the existing, revived and new programs as
well as special events. Give your Chairs and their committee members some applause for generously giving
their full commitment to the ASID Orange County Chapter, as evidenced by what they have planned for all
of you.
One of the new extraordinary programs is iDOD (Interior Designers Open Dialogue), which will offer emerging
designers, design students and seasoned professionals a platform in which to share industry knowledge and
develop professional relationships. The 2015 “Re-Imagined” Expo for designers, students and vendors is set
for May 6 at the Hotel Irvine. This is everything you have ever wanted in an Expo: convenient location, quality
vendors, delicious gourmet food, informative seminars, and door prizes . . . it promises to be great fun. Right
after the Expo is the revival event for Chairs for Charity, May 21 at the Orange County Museum of Art in
Newport Beach. This is a high-end event, featuring chairs custom-made by a variety of designers and then
presented for auction, with all proceeds benefiting this year’s philanthropy project, the Ronald McDonald
House in Orange. Look for upcoming information on how to get involved in the Ronald McDonald House
project this summer.
These are a few of the programs and events created to bring our members together, and also enable our Chapter
to make a difference in the interior design community. There are always opportunities throughout the year
for designers, students and vendors to make a difference by participating in the Chapter’s activities – please
consider getting involved!
An extremely important order of business for ASID is that all interior designers, industry partners, and students
join the IDCC (Interior Design Coalition of California): $55 for designers/IPs and $10 for students. This organization is your guardian angel, advocating for interior designers to be recognized as professionals who are
legally capable of stamping and sealing construction drawings for non-structural and non-seismic plans. Check
out www.idc-ca.org for more detailed information.
Happy New Year!

INDUSTRY PARTNER SPOTLIGHT
The Plexi Gallery: “So Much More Than
Just a Custom Framing Resource”
We hear this from so many interior designers after their first experience with The Plexi Gallery. Doing business ONLY to the
trade for nearly 30 years, we have developed a coherent and seamless process to offer the interior designer and their client a beautiful, affordable, and profitable solution to bring an artistic finishing
touch to any custom designed space.
Let us paint a quick overview of the services our team provides.
With an almost unlimited array of original art, posters, canvases,
prints and giclées, available in custom sizes, we work with you,
the designer, to develop the perfect
cohesive and stylish look that art brings
to any space.
The talents of our Partner Artist, Maria
Deganis, will come to life when presented
with your design concept, materials
selection, color scheme and fabric
patterns, as she works with the designer
and their client to create original art pieces that simultaneously complement
and enhance the design space. Maria has developed a unique process that
designers find extremely valuable to their overall design vision. Her art has
been sought after by numerous designers working on residential projects,
commercial projects and showcase homes such as The ASID Design Tour @
Astoria Towers Irvine, The ASID Orange County Dream Home @ SOCO, and
several of the Orange County Philharmonic Society’s House of Design
tours.
Often times, you look around your client’s home, and discover a personal item
sitting on a shelf, table, or desk, or maybe even tucked away in a closet or
drawer. At The Plexi Gallery, we can turn that object into a showpiece, beautifully displayed by designing and building a custom museum display case for
it. An everyday dimensional object is transformed into a unique design element.
Your clients will love the attention this gives to their personal treasures.
Designers that have been working with us for years love the fact that they can
pick up the phone and make an “In Gallery” appointment to meet personally
with our design team. However, with much of today’s business taking place
through online communication, we also offer “Time Saving” pre-selection
services. Send us your design ideas, material selections, and color samples,
and our staff will preselect artwork and framing ideas for you to choose from
at the time of your appointment.
“At The Plexi Gallery customer service is always at the forefront of our every
day”.

January General Meeting
By Cynthia Prizant, Allied ASID
2014-2015 Programs Co-Chair
Our first General Meeting of 2015 started off with a
BANG! The Lutron Experience Center was the perfect
venue for our inaugural Technology Extravaganza. Five
leading technology providers shared a wealth of key
information about cutting edge technologies designed
to enhance our projects and our businesses processes.
Bret Stall, Sr., Territory Manager at Lutron, treated
guests to a mouthwatering, authentic Italian buffet and
a thoughtful selection of wine, beer and sodas. The
dinner, catered by Maggiano’s, was replete with baked
ziti, chicken marsala, mixed and Caesar salads and
followed by a scrumptious dessert assortment, including crème brulee, apple
crostadas and New York style mini cheesecakes.
Following dinner, the presentation opened with several announcements from
the ASID leadership team, who informed us of upcoming initiatives and events,
such as the newly formed iDOD program, the Cambria and Christopher
Kennedy Compound Tour, Chairs for Charity and the Ronald MacDonald
House remodel. Bret Stall kicked off the technology showcase with a detailed
description of Lutron’s connected home solution, including the award winning
Caséta Wireless, the Lutron Smart Bridge and Lutron App. This combination
of products allows one to adjust lights, temperature and shades from the push
of a button, while inside or outside the home. Scott Harris, VP of Chief
Architect, followed with an enlightening demonstration of the capabilities of
the Chief Architect home design software. He quickly drafted a kitchen, and
with a click of a button, toggled between space plan, elevation, and rendering
views and easily added and adjusted dimensions, finishes, fixtures and design
details. Next up was Teryl Birkes, of Teryl Birkes & Associates, who demonstrated Studio Webware. This project management and business accounting
application provides an easy, intuitive user interface that is specific to the
interior design business. Teryl highlighted an example of how to capture
product information for a client project one single time and then easily
transition through the proposal, purchasing and invoicing processes. Fourth
up was Microdesk’s team, Solution Specialists Felix Cambou and Mallary
White. Felix and Mallary presented a variety of software applications, such
as AutoCAD, Revit and 3DS Max, exhibiting some of the complex modeling
capabilities that are available with these products. Last, but not least, was
Adriani Leon, Community Outreach Manager at Wix. Adriani showed us how
to easily create a professional website using Wix and discussed insightful SEO
strategies.
Following the presentations, guests had the opportunity to visit technology
stations, which were set up around the Lutron facility. The speakers were
available to answer additional questions and provide product materials for
further exploration. Everyone was very excited and enthused to learn more
about the fantastic applications and products designed to improve service
offerings and business operations for interior design professionals.
We concluded the evening with our raffle, which included a complimentary
one-hour consultation and set up of Studio Webware by Teryl Birkes, and a
Hubsan remote control Quadcopter donated by Microdesk. Two very fortunate winners, Julie Mataya and Chidimma Abuka, won the grand prizes
graciously donated by our host, Bret, of Lutron – complete Caséta Wireless
systems, including full installation and set up! Wow!! Lucky ladies!!
Special thanks, once again, to Kerry Anderson of Audio Visions who coordinated and supported the A/V for five different speakers! Our warmest gratitude goes to Bret Stall, of Lutron, for facilitating and generously hosting a
top-notch event! What an inspiring and energizing start to the new year!

December General Meeting & Luncheon
A festive Holiday Luncheon with an emphasis on charity was the theme for
the December 10th ASID-OC General Meeting at Fersugon's Kitchen and
Bath Gallery in Irvine. The event began with a spread of fantastic hors d'
oeuvres, wine, beer and hot cider. ASID members and guests were then treated
to a variety of delicious holiday foods and trimmings, provided by Jay’s Catering.
Gigi Harris, Chapter President, then introduced the representatives from
Orange County Ronald McDonald House, Mr. Noel Burcelis, Executive Director
and Ms. Katie Russell, Director of Operations. Both spoke about the house
and their personal experiences with many of the patients and families who
have lived at the house during their childrens' care and recoveries. All of the
stories served to captivate the audience and there wasn't a dry eye in the
house by the end of the presentation.
The luncheon concluded with the raffle of many great prizes from Steamist,
SubZero Wolf, Brizo, Ferguson's and Plexi-Gallery, including faucets, gift
cards, framing certificates, gift baskets, showerheads and a grand raffle prize
of an MTI solid surface sink, won by Regina Robles, Industry Partner from
The Last Layer in Rancho Santa Margarita.

November General Meeting
By Cynthia Prizant, Allied ASID
2014-2015 Programs Co-Chair
What a record-breaking turnout we had for our November General Meeting! The combination of amazing venue at the Daltile showroom and stone yard, and inspiring Sherwin
Williams’ ColorMix 2015 presentation, attracted over 330 members, industry partners
and invited guests to our annual membership drive meeting. Sherwin Williams graciously
sponsored the registration for the evening so that ticketing fees were waived for all attendees.
Linnea Graves, Gallery Manager at Daltile, organized a feast in the tile gallery,
amongst a unique display of striking new tile offerings and designs by a variety of Daltile
vendors. The scrumptious buffet, created by Taste Catering, consisted of an incredible
assortment of puff pastry tarts, sliders, steak and chicken skewers, roasted vegetables,
and assorted cheese and nut platters. Dinner was complimented by a wonderful selection of wines, beers and sodas.
Chidimma Abuka, Sonya Zamora, Farrah Smith, Miko Krisvoy,
Margie De Maria
After enjoying the fabulous medley of dinner items and a chance to meet and mingle
with new and old friends, guests headed to the stone yard where they were treated to a
mouthwatering array of chocolates, cupcakes and assorted sweets. The evening’s presentation began with a warm welcome by President Gigi Harris, and our enthusiastic
Membership Director, Michele Prata. Sherwin Williams’ Southwestern Division Designer
Marketing Manager, Karen Galvin, then took us on a visual journey of the up and coming
color trends in design. Palettes, such as Chrysalis, based on earth and sky; Voyage,
inspired by the supernatural and magical; and Unrestrained, motivated by the bold
and Bohemian lifestyle, were a few of the enlightening color mixes that were showcased
in this inspirational forecast.
The evening finished with a bang as we raffled off an impressive set of prizes, including
a complimentary registration to a future General meeting from ASID, color inspiration
books from Sherwin Williams,
multiple gift cards to Crate &
Barrel, West Elm and South
Coast Plaza, a phenomenal spa
basket, and the grand prize, a
brand new iPad, all courtesy

Special thanks to Linnea Graves,

exceptional collaboration with

iDOD-Interior Designers Open Dialogue
January 22nd was the official kickoff for the first meeting of the Interior
Designers Open Dialogue (iDOD). iDOD committee member and showroom manager Abby Menhenett, of Century Furniture at the Laguna Design
Center, so graciously hosted the event with an array of food, spirits, great
music and a beautiful setting. iDOD was created by a newly formed committee
that has a passion for helping other designers connect, learn, grow and conduct
business more efficiently. This group is for interior designers only and is
different than anything that has been created in the Orange County chapter.
Plans to successfully integrate mentoring, emerging professionals, seasoned
designers and students, all participating in an open dialogue format, are in
full force; the attendance and interest for the first meeting was unprecedented.
Inquiries have already been made by other chapters across the country regarding
our program; it seems designers everywhere desire a format where a community of designers can help propel each other to success. Students and seasoned
designers all have something to share and learn from one another - whether
it is studying for LEED certification, the latest software program, social media,
budgeting, human resources or time management.
The iDOD meetings will be held in a variety of formats, whether round table,
small group discussions, informative presentations or field trips. Based on
the immediate feedback from the first meeting, members are excited about
mentoring and about meeting in small groups. For individuals deciding to be
a mentor or protégé, or participate in small group meetings, minimum requirements have been established. Small groups could comprise of NCIDQ study
groups or just general discussion groups focusing on current design topics
and how to successfully integrate them into our businesses.
Special thanks to the iDOD committee for months of work in creating this
new nationally-recognized and approved ASID program: Julie Mataya (Chair),
Sonya Fortune Zamora (Co-Chair), Chidimma Abuka, Stacy Vieth, Valerie
Ribeiro and Abby Menhenett. ASID OCC expects this program to be outrageously successful and will have an upcoming announcement regarding the
next highly anticipated meeting.

Legislation Year End Wrap Up
Merry and bright, cozy and warm … no matter your style, we at IDCC wish
you and yours a beautiful holiday season.
Naturally it is the time of year when we look back and reflect on our accomplishments, with gratitude to all of you who have supported our efforts. We
had anticipated that 2014 would be a quiet year for the Coalition but it turned
out to be as busy as ever. On January 1, SB 308 went into effect, extending
interior design legislation until January 1, 2018. The new bill contained many
new provisions strengthening the law. In May, our Lobbyists, Susan Stuart
and Erin Evans-Fudem of Capitol Advisors, discovered that AB2192 had quietly
been introduced in the State Assembly and was ready to move through to the
Senate. AB 2192 was the beginning of an effort by architects to start excluding
designers from performing our work under the Architect’s exemption in the
Business and Professions code. Under the guidance of Capitol Advisors,
a strategic grass-roots effort was quickly and effectively launched. IDCC,
CCIDC, IIDA, ASID, CALBO, CLCID, along with your support, worked together
in communicating to legislators the dangers this bill posed to our profession.
On June 23, the bill was pulled by its author and it was not heard by the Senate.
One of IDCC’s primary objectives in 2014 was to work towards healing, unifying
and strengthening relationships between the various advocacy organizations
of the California interior design community. As everyone came together in
opposition to AB2192, it was shown that united, our voices are louder and
stronger when we work together rather than in opposition. Many doors have
opened, old relationships are mending and new relationships have begun. As
the year came to a close, the Coalition has focused on continued outreach to
these various organizations, meeting together and seeking commonality.
We have extended our outreach and education efforts to CALBO to further
our cause in seeking statewide uniform acceptance of interior design plans
for permit throughout the state. We have also continued to engage the education community stressing the importance of legal recognition of the interior
design profession and its impact upon their graduates.
2014 was not quiet after all, but it was highly successful and we intend to capitalize on that success in the coming new year. 2015 is fast upon us. In January,
legislators, many of them new, will take their seats. We will work to keep
our presence known in Sacramento. Capitol Advisors will be keeping their
eyes open and ears to the ground for any proposed legislation that might
adversely affect our profession. While AB 2192 failed to pass from the legislature, we cannot be sure it has gone away for good. There are those that will
continue to try to take away the rights we have to practice our profession to
its fullest extent. We are continuing to engage other interior design advocacy
organizations to build goodwill and search for common ground among us. We
will continue working toward IDCC’s goal of ensuring all local building departments accept interior design stamped plans and are working with CALBO
in a coordinated effort to find outreach and education opportunities. We
envision working with IIDA and ASID to add student chapters on college
campuses to our coalition advocacy efforts.
Again, we are so thankful to those of you who supported our efforts and your
profession. We can’t place enough emphasis on continuing to build the grassroots network of designers that has proved so successful. Your support has
been and remains critical. IDCC is made up entirely of volunteers, and it takes
significant funding to maintain our vital lobbyist relationship and pay administrative and operating expenses. A large source of that funding is covered by
grants, but it is not enough and some grant money is conditioned upon raising
funds on our own. As the year ends, we ask you to please consider an additional donation to the Coalition if you are an active member. If your membership has expired, please renew or rejoin. If you have never been a member,

please come on board. Finally, please become involved! We are very excited
and confident about the path we are on and there can never be too many hands
or voices. Visit our website at http://www.idc-ca.org to donate, renew, join,

profession.
We extend our sincere appreciation for your support, and offer our best wishes
for a healthy, happy and successful 2015!
ASID Industry
Partners Forum
By Celeste Lehmann
Indusry Partner Liaison
On January 13th we held our first Industry Forum of
2015 at the new Trendy Surfaces showroom at the Laguna
Design Center. We had a great turnout of new and current
industry partners, looking to learn more about ASID and
the different opportunities that the Orange County
chapter has to offer. The resounding theme from the
evening was how and why our Industry Partners should
get more involved with the chapter. We showcased a
video of fellow designers and Industry Partners that gave
insight into the benefits of being involved with the ASID. Attendees of the IP
Forum left the meeting energized to get involved and excited for 2015. If you
were unable to attend the meeting and would like to watch the video or
learn more about the opportunities, please stop by the ASID office and
speak with Alison Sperling or log onto our ASID Youtube channel at:

STUDENT

Student Rep to the
Board Message
By Nick Virus, Student Rep to the Board
This year is off to an exciting start for the Orange County
Chapter! The best part is that a lot of it focused on the students!
That definitely keeps me busy, but it is also a great opportunity for students to become more active in the chapter.
Many of you started the academic year off by participating in Real World
Design Week. We received a lot of positive feedback from both students and
designers who participated. Near the end of January, we got national approval
for our new mentorship program, iDOD (Interior Designers Open Dialogue).
The first meeting was well attended and we had a great mix of students and
professionals. I have very high hopes for this program and am looking forward
to seeing more of you at the meetings.

In addition, Student Career Day is fast approaching on February 26th. We
have been working hard to make this one of the best events in recent years,
and we have also been invited to attend other chapters’ student days, which
is an excellent opportunity to network with more of our design peers. Following
that, the next event on the horizon is one that is very close to my heart: the
Noah’s ARC Design Competition! It is through this amazing partnership with
the Salvation Army and ASID OCC that I got my start in ASID. I have had the
amazing opportunity to captain the team from Westwood the last two
years. This year, I get to see it all from behind the scenes. This is one of the
best opportunities to showcase your design skills and help your community
at the same time.
I look forward to seeing you at the Student Career Day and hopefully an iDOD
meeting or two before I have the pleasure of writing this column again. Until
then, I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the great American
Actor-Musician Mr. Steve Martin: “Be so good they can’t ignore you!”
