Dive into the underground
The always pulsating international underground is well represented with the addition of
several artists associated with the UK based Opal Tapes roster, including: label head
STEPHEN BISHOP, whose post industrial, textured, austere electronics as BASIC HOUSE
will feature, the skewed tech and ecclesiastical chords of KAREN GWYER, the gauzy,
aromatic dub house of PERFUME ADVERT, while Brooklyn based cohort PATRICIA will also
bring his crunchy percussion and raspy basslines to the festival for the first time. From
the infamous L.I.E.S label, the now Paris-based via Chicago producer and performer
SVENGALISGHOST represents with his frenetic, dirty, retro-future visions, as does
GUNNAR HASLAM with the world premiere of his solo live set.
A tribute to Light
The MAC will host a special program of light based performances on Thursday night, along
with other audiovisual and immersive fare in Salle BWR throughout the week. MUTEK
welcomes back TAKAMI NAKAMOTO from NONOTAK for the world premiere of a new
audioreactive work, a collaboration with drummer SEBASTIEN BENOITS; joining this bill
are two artists presented in partnership with CTM festival as part of their Berlin Current
initiative which supports emerging sounds from the German capital: Russian producer
DASHA RUSH presents her immersive, and experimental ANTARCTIC TAKT project, and
Belgian/Italian duo LUMISOKEA combine ingenious light based scenography with their
enveloping, neo-industrial sonic world. From Mexico, accomplished multimedia artist LVIS
MEJÍA participates in a lineup of screen based works on Wednesday night with his live A/V
performance, SYNTAGMA.

Deep Listening
Finnish noise veteran MIKA VAINIO joins a deep listening program on Thursday already
anchored by RICHARD DEVINE, as does Italian producer LUCY, previously announced for
Friday night at Métropolis, who will play an additional set of improvised modular synth
music; while local minimal stalwart PHEEK will present his latest sound design leaning
work in this context too.
New Canadian Producers and Recognized Scenemakers
MUTEK is of course proud to also put forward a collection of promising new Canadian
producers and recognized scenemakers. From the fertile Montréal scene: the classically
trained DREW GRAGG whose wistful output has been picked up by NICOLAS JAAR’s label,
Other People; noise/techno mainstay MARTIN DUMAIS (AUN) brings STÄRKER, a thick,
intense new project with Cyclic Law’s FREDERIC ARBOUR to the big stage of Métropolis;
seasoned techno/electro DJ and producer EVELYN DROUIN aka MINI, debuts a live
audiovisual project with visual artist NELLY-EVE RAJOTTE; BILLY DALESSANDRO teams up
with the Moment Factory’s MANUEL BOSSARD for a high definition audiovisual work;
emerging but prolific producer and sound designer CABAAL has a new A/V project; radio
artist and post-digital turntablist WIKLOW debuts; and last year’s audiovisual contest
winner and MUTEK VJ, HUGUES CLÉMENT presents his brand new piece DICHOTOMIE.
From Gatineau, RÉSERVOIR performs a set of austere reverb drenched dub techno
inspired by brutalist architecture; sound designer JAKOB THIESEN from Toronto presents
his live ambient audiovisual show WAVESHAPER; and from British Columbia, rhythmic
delicacies from JONATHAN SCHERK; and dancehall tropes from SEEKERSINTERNATIONAL.
While the vast majority of artists playing MUTEK perform their own original works live,
careful consideration goes into choosing the Saturday night DJ for the all night
MÉTROPOLIS program. This year welcomes Perlon records mainstay, and boundary
pushing producer FUMIYA TANAKA to this coveted spot. Also taking to the decks during
NOCTURNE 4 at the MAC, young, dynamic talent ANTHONY NAPLES.
And there is more to come, including the sensational audiovisual performances that
comprise the A/VISIONS series at Théâtre Maisonneuve, and all of the free programming
including: the outdoor EXPÉRIENCE series, the late night experimental PLAY program (at
the MAC in the Salle BWR on Friday and Saturday night) and the entire compliment of
daytime DIGI_SECTION workshops, showrooms, panels and artists Q&As at the Phi
Centre.
