EXPÉRIENCE
Free outdoor stage on the Parterre of the Quartier des spectacles presented by
Mailchimp
Expanding on last year’s winning formula that mixed emergent local and Canadian artists with
international names, MUTEK moves its outdoor operations to the Parterre, the open air lawn
facing the Maison symphonique. Running from Thursday to Sunday this year, the Parterre will
be outfitted in MUTEK’s inimitable style and complemented all week long with food trucks and
refreshments. The substantial increase in capacity at this new site allows room for big name
guests like Canadian superstar MATHEW JONSON, the farewell concert from brassy electronic
Mexican big band the NORTEC COLLECTIVE, following a recent stopover at Coachella, British
bass music aficionado KODE9, the legendary ADRIAN SHERWOOD and masterful techno maven
DANIEL BELL.

DIGI_SECTION
A digital technology and music symposium, artist Q&As, panels, presentations,
workshops and showrooms
This year the festival has expanded the depth and reach of its free daytime programming at
the Phi Centre, which will run from Tuesday, May 26 to Saturday, May 30. Geared towards
curious explorers, music enthusiasts, and creative professionals, this crucial component of the
festival furthers critical discourse through thoughtful, intimate interviews with artists and
creators, hands-on interaction with the latest technologies, workshops dedicated to visual
software and practices, industry insights and presentations, and by creating opportunities for
the community at large to network and converse.
Beginning on Tuesday, May 26, MUTEK welcomes the Oxford University research project
MusDig, as it reports on several years of research into digital technology and its impact on
music making practices, with a full day symposium mixing academics and artists.
Once again esteemed media partners, The Wire magazine, Resident Advisor and HOLO
Magazine will conduct sessions and live interviews with some of the festival’s most notable
performers: SHERWOOD & PINCH, ROBIN FOX, ATOM™, and HIROAKI UMEDA.
Showing off a range of new tech and tools, this year’s technological partners are plentiful, with
gear on display from: Roland, Hexinverter, Sputnik Modular, Malekko Heavy Industry,
Tiptop Audio, Verbos Electronics, Kilpatrick Audio, littleBits Electronics and Korg.
Workshops are offered by Ableton Live, TouchDesigner, Elektron, Verbos, Tiptop and
MadMapper.
Roland in particular, will be displaying their latest range of instruments all day on Friday,
culminating in live demonstration/performance from Montréal’s MATEO MURPHY, a master of
their AIRA series of instruments already.
On Saturday, in partnership with MOOG AUDIO, an extensive modular synthesizer
showroom will be set up to exhibit the latest modules in the renaissance and rebirth of these
machines. Native Instruments will also take charge of a room to unveil their latest tools and
devices.

16TH EDITION
MAY 27 - 31, 2015
McGill and Concordia University exert a presence this year: The Electronic Music Association
of Concordia will host a lecture and question period for students and the public with RICHARD
DEVINE and another with Luca Mortellaro (aka LUCY), while Professor Jonathan Sterne, the
Chair in Culture and Technology at McGill leads a discussion centered on epiphanies and a
creative process informed by technology featuring ROBIN FOX and Steve Goodman (KODE9).
SPECIAL PROJECTS
An experiential sonic installation at the Phi Centre, a 5 à 7 collaboration with FTA
and a 360 animation in the dome at the SAT
Housed at the Phi Centre during the festival and running until June 11, Steve Goodman
(KODE9) and Toby Heys present their experiential sonic installation, film and discussion,
Delusions of the Living Dead / DRNE Cartography, a new iteration of their ongoing
research as AUDINT (co-presented with DHC/ART). Featuring bespoke subwoofers, directional
ultrasonic speakers, and wearable SubPacs, the work is based on their 2014 record/book/print
release Martial Hauntology, which explores vibration and the history and future of sound as a
weapon.
Teaming up again with the Festival TransAmériques, MUTEK co-presents two eccentric talents
from Montréal’s fertile underground for a free 5 à 7 at the Coeur des Sciences on Friday, May
29: YLANG YLANG and FDG-.
On Saturday, May 30 its an immersive and musical brunch (12:00am to 3:00pm - $20)
presented by the NFB and the SAT, with the dome version of MUNRO FERGUSON’s seven
minute 3D animation inspired by the mythical Greek half man, half bull, MINOTAUR,
accompanied by a session of KID KOALA’s Music To Draw To.
