BACKGROUND:
World University Service of Canada (WUSC) is a Canadian non-profit organization with a mission
to foster human development and global understanding through education and training. We are
professionals, students, volunteers, faculty, and community leaders working together to find
solutions and provide opportunities to the world’s most marginalized people. A central component
of WUSC’s strategic plan is continued delivery and expansion of our programming on Canadian
campuses with increased focus on the Student Refugee Program and initiatives that underscore
our unique relationship with the Canadian post-secondary community, and contribute to the
internationalization of Canadian campuses.
Active on more than 75 college and university campuses, WUSC’s student-run Local Committees
(LC) make up the largest network of student groups of its kind in Canada who share a common
belief – that education changes the world. The Local Committees promote and support WUSC’s
campus initiatives, including the Student Refugee Program, Uniterra Program, amongst others,
through education, public engagement and volunteering.
Student Refugee Program (SRP): The SRP provides student refugees living in countries of
asylum an opportunity to pursue their education at Canadian post-secondary institutions. These
refugees come to Canada as permanent residents. Each year, approximately eighty-five
candidates are accepted under the program and supported by WUSC Local Committees involved
with SRP. Local Committees are made up of faculty/staff and students at post-secondary
institutions across Canada and provide financial, emotional and moral support to the refugee
students for a minimum period of 12 months.
Uniterra Program: Uniterra is an international voluntary cooperation and development program
which aims to strengthen organizations and networks through the exchange of expertise and
knowledge. Jointly implemented by the Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI)
and World University Service of Canada (WUSC), Uniterra contributes to improving the socioeconomic conditions of poor and marginalized communities in 14 countries in Africa, Latin
America and the Caribbean and Asia. .
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: The successful candidate will work under the supervision of
Senior Program Staff in the Campus Engagement team in conjunction with the team. Work will
include, but not be limited to:
Mobilization:
 Mobilize WUSC network of Local Committee members in Ontario to organize activities,
participate in trainings and attend events throughout the academic year;

Promote WUSC and Uniterra campaigns to our network of students in Canada;
Strengthen the capacity of LCs to sponsor refugee students and expand the SRP on their
campus, with a strong emphasis on the sustainability of the program;
Support the planning process of the 2015-2016 LC activities to further engage WUSC
youth members on global issues;
Help maintain and/or expand WUSC networks on francophone and college campuses;
Communication:
 Gather and disseminate stories, best practices and lessons learned from LCs on
university and college campuses across the country;
 Facilitate communication with and between LCs, as well as WUSC Ottawa;
 Provide leadership in the dissemination of regional and cross-Canada communications
(emails, newsletters, web);
 Help maintain a continuous and vibrant social media presence for WUSC Campus
Engagement (ie. Facebook, Twitter)
 Effectively monitor and record regional LC Public Engagement activities on WUSC
databases for reporting purposes;
 Promote opportunities to link Canadian Local Committees with Local Committees in
Burkina Faso and Ghana;
 Participate in weekly meetings with WUSC Ottawa.
Education and training

 Participate in the Uniterra Leadership Meeting (Ottawa, August 22-24 ) and the
International Forum (Ottawa, January 2016), and facilitate sessions at these events
where required;
 Coordinate the logistics of one Regional Meeting (including invitations, catering,
reimbursement etc.) in their region;
 Deliver in-person and online workshops designed to empower LC members;
 Develop and disseminate training resources, with a particular focus on distance learning;
 Promote and support Uniterra Symposium activities in their region;
 Promote Student Without Borders® and Uniterra International Seminar opportunities on
campus via the Local Committee network;
 Represent WUSC at regional and local events.
QUALIFICATIONS:









The successful candidate will be a recent graduate from a Canadian post-secondary
institution;
Former LC members and sponsored students are encouraged to apply.
Experience with campaigning and fundraising, working with volunteers and organizing
events;
An understanding of refugee and newcomer experiences;
Proven ability to work as part of a team and under tight deadlines;
Knowledge of and interest in WUSC and Uniterra;
Strong presentation and facilitation skills;
Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office and database management skills;
Skills in on-line tools, social media, photo editing and desktop publishing will be
considered an asset.

Language
 Fluency in oral and written English;
 Fluency in oral and written French is considered a strong asset.
