Multiculturalism
Australia has a very diverse culture and lifestyle. Australia’s original
inhabitants, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, are the
custodians of one of the world’s oldest continuing cultural traditions.
Nowadays, most Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people live in
cities and towns. Many people still remain on their traditional lands
and maintain aspects of their traditional lifestyles in a modern-day
Australia.
Today, with a population of 23 million, more than 20% of Australians
are born overseas and more than 40% are of mixed cultural origins.
Over 200 languages are spoken in Australia - after English, the most
popular are Italian, Greek, Cantonese, Arabic, and Mandarin.
Australian culture is as broad and varied as the country’s landscape.
Australia is multicultural and multiracial and this is reflected in the
country’s food, lifestyle and cultural practices and experiences.
Australia promotes a freedom of religion and facilitates the diverse
worship practices of its people through the establishment of places
of worship such as, Catholic and Anglican churches, Hindu, Sikh
and Buddhist temples, mosques and synagogues which are easily
accessible in major cities.
This diversity of influences creates a cultural environment in Australia
that is lively, energetic, innovative and outward looking.
