The Banner “The Lord Is My Banner” —Exodus 17:15 barringtonumc.com Barrington United Methodist Church June 2015 Putting One Foot in Front of the Other: Stumbling along on the Journey of Faith At Barrington United Methodist Church, we recognize that all of life is a journey of faith. We live each day putting one foot in front of the other on the path that leads us to the kingdom of God. The journey is not always smooth—sometimes we fall. How do we get back up again after we stumble? This June during worship we will explore together the rocky parts of the journey that can trip us up and how to get back up after we fall. Summer Worship Schedule Starts June 14 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Pastor's Column by Rev. Chris Winkler Psalm 100 1 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come into his presence with singing. 3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name. 5 For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. I have often said that it is my understanding that the three things people want most from a church are meaningful, engaging worship; to grow deeper in faith and fellowship; and a place to serve God and their neighbors through acts of charity, mercy and kindness. As we look forward to our new Sunday morning schedule that begins on August 23rd, I will focus my next three Pastor’s Columns on our plans to enhance these three important aspects of our life together. Frederick Buechner says that to worship God means to serve God. He writes: Basically there are two ways to do it. One way is to do things for God that he needs to have done—run errands, carry messages, fight on his side, feed his lambs, and so on. The other way is to do things for him that you need to do—sing songs, create beautiful things, give things up for him, tell God what’s on your mind and on your heart, in general rejoice in him and make a fool of yourself for him… Continued on page 2 In this Issue Pastor’s Column, Connection Point, page 2; Calendar, page 3 Adult Ministries, Noah's Ark Christian Academy, page 4 Children's and Youth Ministries, page 5 United Methodist Women, United Methodist Men, page 6 Reaching Out in Love, page 7 Staff contact information, Upcoming Events, page 8 (continued from page 1) I hope these three descriptions of our worship services help you find a place, time and style that fits your needs 8:00 a.m. Chapel Worship It is my prayer that these sketches of the essential elements of these services and what they will be called will also give you language to invite others to come and join us as we sing songs, tell God what is on our hearts and minds and encounter the amazing God we serve. As you finally pack away those winter clothes, just remember there will be another Rummage Sale, October 2 and 3! So, if you're a person who likes lists, let us help you out! 1. Put aside those gently-worn winter items and any of your other treasures for the sale. Let your friends and neighbors know as well. Drop-offs will begin Sunday, September 27 and continue through noon on Wednesday, September 30. 2. Consider setting some time aside to come and help—it's a great way to meet new friends and it's always fun to see what you can find! We will be setting up for the sale beginning Saturday, September 26 and continuing through Thursday, October 1. If you haven't joined in the fun of this project, now is the time to start! 3. Marvel at the fact that donations of merchandise and time have made it possible for us to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to very grateful organizations in the past 80 plus years. 4. If you need more information, contact Mary Mellon to see how you might use your passion to be part of this historic service project. Mark your calendar and plan to bring a friend! We have a special request this year: we'd love to improve our clothing department, so are looking for skirt hangers (the clip type). If you are able to keep the hangers as you shop, please think about donating them to the sale! Just drop them off in the church office. Thanks!!! Thanks to all who purchased geraniums on Mother's Day. That fund raiser helped us to send the first part of our annual pledge to United Methodist Women. And, thanks to those who donated items for the May Baskets. Twelve baskets were delivered to twelve surprised individuals! United Methodist Men UMM Practical Christianity for Men The BUMC men’s faith development and service group has officially changed its name! To better characterize its activities, the United Methodist Men’s Bible Study Group is now UMM Practical Christianity for Men. There is no change to the mission as the group will continue to study the Bible, read books by important Christian thinkers, feed the hungry by working in the church’s garden and at Feed My Starving Children, man the USO at O’Hare, continue to aid worshipers with Portico Ministries, and undertake other educational and service projects. Regular meetings are 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on Saturdays but don’t miss the half hour of coffee and camaraderie before the meeting! Reaching Out in Love Upcoming Adult Mission Opportunities The Missions Ministry Group has been working to bring BUMC members opportunities to go out in the community and help. Below are the upcoming local opportunities. Upcoming dates at Epworth United Methodist Church: June 27, August 1, September 19, October 10 This mission project involves work on the church building (painting and cleaning) at Epworth United Methodist Church 5253 N. Kenmore Ave. Chicago, IL 60640 Please contact Scott Downing at sdowning@mcguirewoods.com with questions or dates you want to volunteer. As additional opportunities become available, we will post them. Norma Jung-Stein plants tomatoes in the Congregational Garden. photo: Christine Streed Join Us as We Plant the Congregational Garden! Over the past two weeks, volunteers have planted a portion of the 2100 tomato plants, 100 tomatillo plants, and various types of peppers that were raised from seed in a greenhouse. The planting continues as the weather permits. Your heart, hands and green thumb make a difference! Lou Schairer, a retired high school horticulture teacher, has been involved in the planning, planting, and harvest in the garden over the past six years. “It’s a big science experiment. We are always learning and trying something different.” The benefit is in the food provided to those in need. Just think, the average cost of a pound of vegetables is $2. If one butternut squash is 3 lbs., we can save a struggling family a significant amount of money by providing our harvest to local food banks. Another word of wisdom from Lou on the garden, “It’s a great place for people to really get down on their knees.” To be a part of planting please contact the church office at 847-836-5540. Feed My Starving Children Please contact Linda McGill from the Missions Ministry Group at mcgwilinator@aol.com to reserve your place on the team to pack meals for starving children. The next opportunity to pack meals is in Schaumburg, Saturday, July 18, 2015, 9:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m. Directions are at http://www.fmsc.org/location/Schaumburg News from Mission in Cambodia Katie Kirschner, missionary to Cambodia supported by BUMC, sent a ministry update. Here are excerpts from her letter. "I have been working with the Women at Risk project, Pkhaa Riik Chia Thmai (PRCT). The months I've spent working on this project have been wonderful and challenging, as the main focus has been a sewing program to best equip these women to know God and have skill that they might take with them. My heart is that through relationship with at risk women, we might creatively love, value and support them. I have loved this opportunity to do this and I plan on seeking even more ways to serve through my passion. Most on my heart are the women who have no community (those who have mental disability and are homeless, so therefore walk our streets alone everyday), single mothers, homeless women, women with at-risk pregnancies, and women in karaoke/prostitution. I am thankful for your support of me, for believing in me and the ministry I've joined here. Thank you for your patience and complete generosity. You have blessed me very much. Thank you!!
