It is with a heavy heart that I had to hang up my red jumpsuit
and cape (and the hair). With the conclusion of Showboat
2015, I unfortunately cannot think of another club event where
the jumpsuit would be appropriate commodore attire.
With the arrival of spring, activities at the club are kicking
into high gear. In April we have our famous Easter Brunch
and Family Bingo Night. Additionally, the start of the 67th
Newport to Ensenada (N2E) is April 24. Again this year, we
will host a pre-race barbecue April 23 for racing crews and
BCYC members on the patio. I encourage all of our members
to attend – even power boaters like me are welcome. It is an
inexpensive and fun evening at the club.
The magician at our monthly Prime Rib Night has been a big
hit. Overall attendance is up and the feedback from members
on the food and the entertainment has been excellent. I should
mention to anyone who has not been, that the name is a bit of a
Showboat 2015
April 2015
misnomer. There are many other fantastic options besides prime
rib, including fish, chicken and several salads, so do not let an
aversion to prime rib keep you from this great monthly feast.
Prime Rib Night is normally the first Thursday of the month.
As in past years, May’s PRN will be on our season Closing Day
— Friday, May 8.
The lower level renovation
is progressing and should
be nearly complete by
Opening Day.
The Ship’s Store has stocked
some new and exciting
merchandise. There are
all kinds of new items, Renovation Update = CONCRETE.
including beach cover-ups
and bling and non-bling fashionable attire.
In closing, I want to thank Treasurer Gary Granbery and our
accounting staff of Controller Caitlin Ritchey and Dale Silva for
their outstanding efforts during the recent yearend close. Our
external auditors presented the 2014 draft financial statements
to the Board of Directors. They were approved by the board and
your copy will arrive shortly in the mail. Our books and records
are in excellent order and our financial situation continues
to generate adequate cash flow to support the present and
projected future needs of the club.

Can Work Be Fun?
This month I would like to highlight our Cruise Committee
and the wonderful plans they have for the 2015 cruise
season. Bill and Kristy Parr have put together a varied
and exciting series of cruises that will have something for
everyone to enjoy. By the time you read this, the Huntington
Harbour Yacht Club cruise will be completed and signups
for the April Lido Raft-Up will be underway.
Going to the Cruise Committee meetings is a delight. When
this group has so much fun and laughs discussing their
plans for the upcoming cruises, you know that they will
be great. Planning is ongoing for eight major cruises, with
the likely addition of a few pop-up cruises when weather
and the urge inspires. Each of the eight scheduled cruises
will have a different co-chair working with the Parrs. It is
obvious from the enthusiasm of everyone on the committee
that this will be a great year for cruising.
Bill and Kristy have done a remarkable job of bringing
some of our newer members onto their committee. This
certainly adds new life and ideas and provides these folks
with a chance to get to better know other members, making
them feel that this is truly the club for them. We are very
fortunate to have people as dedicated as Bill and Kristy
taking such an active role at BCYC.
April 2015
April is the fourth month of the year on the Gregorian
calendar, the fifth on the early Julian, and one of four months
with a length of 30 days. It’s also the month of the Newport to
Ensenada Race (N2E). This year marks the 67th anniversary
of the race — few competitions can claim such a long and
successful run. Are you entered yet? There’s still time. Do it!
The month of April is also when the second race of the
Lorin Weiss Series takes place. The ever-increasing Harbor
20 Fleet runs through a series of back-to-back windward/
leeward races – the top positions on the leaderboard can
change dramatically. For a front-row seat, join us on the
Race Committee boat as an observer.
Señor Taco wants to remind everyone that our world-famous
Taco Tuesdays start May 12. Remember, this is a member
party event and it is a race, with great food at an excellent
price! If you don’t have a boat, you can crew on one. If you
are a skipper, add a new crew member. Go to the Racing tab
on the BCYC website and register on the Crew List.
If you missed the Coastal Safety At Sea Seminar at the end
of February, you can find the slides on the club website
under the Racing tab. I’ve been a boater for over 50 years
and learned some good tips, so check out the slides. I plan
to make it an annual event on the BCYC calendar.

DID YOU
KNOW
? Important Information
Did you know that BCYC leases additional
parking spaces directly across the street
from the club? These easy-access spots are
available weekdays after 6 p.m. and anytime
on the weekends.
Mark Gaudio finished in first place in the Senior Sabot
Midwinter regatta, Feb. 21, against a field of 14 top racers
Did you know that one of the key ingredients
for hosting a successful event at the club
is to make an appointment with a member
of the Food and Beverage team? This will
assure that all details for your event will be
handled according to your requirements.

Sabot C1 Success
Spring is underway and boaters are getting more and more
active on the water. Our Spring Sailing Program is in full
steam with close to 30 participants across all three classes –
it’s great to see everyone here on a regular basis again. We’ve
had perfect sailing weather so far this season, which is a
welcome change from the light-air winter months.
I
have
some
remarkable
achievements to mention from
our most dedicated BCYC junior
sailors. First and foremost,
congratulations to Zoe Johansson
on her performance at the Sabot
Midwinter Regatta, hosted by
Newport Harbor Yacht Club,
where she raced her way to the
top of the C1 fleet of 13 boats.
Moderate southerly breeze made
for perfect Sabot conditions,
providing an ideal platform for Zoe
to demonstrate her superior boat
handling and tactical knowledge. As a result of this win, she
has advanced to the next level – welcome to Sabot Bs Zoe!
Justin Coburn also
found success in the
C1 fleet at the SCYA
Manning Regatta in
Alamitos Bay, also the
2015 Sabot Nationals
venue in August. Justin
dominated the fleet
with a win in every
race except one! For
his efforts, he not only
received a class award,
but his name is engraved
on the perpetual trophy. Jake Johansson also achieved great
results, finishing in the top three in six of nine races. Despite
challenging wind conditions and only his 60 or so pounds
to work with, Jake stood next to his club teammate on the
podium in second place. Great racing by both of you.
BCYC sent one boat to the final regatta in the Shadden Series,
held inside the Long Beach breakwater. Skipper Cameron
Wood and crew Laurel Foster worked very hard all weekend
to keep the boat under control in sustained 15-knot breezes
with gusts to 20. Hailing from Newport Beach, we don’t get
the opportunity to practice in big wind such as this very
4
often, but these two did a great job and steadily improved
with each race against the best youth sailors in Southern
California.
Later in April is busy with high school sailing as the regular
season peaks with Pacific Coast Championships. The Gold
event will be held in San Francisco, while the Silver fleet
will sail in Cabrillo Beach. Those who perform well at Gold
PCC have the chance to qualify for Nationals next month
in Annapolis, MD. On a club level, we look forward to the
Lido Island Yacht Club Spring Dinghy regatta April 18-19.
With summer rapidly approaching, I hope to see more of our
BCYC team jumping in their boats to get a head start on the
Summer Sailing Program.

Prepare for
Bingo Night!
April is going to be a very big month for BCYC’s Junior
Board of Directors. We have several juniors competing in
various regattas along the California coast. However, most
importantly, the Junior Board will be hosting our annual
Bingo Night at BCYC April 10. Please make plans to attend!
This year, all proceeds from Bingo Night will go solely to the
Junior Sailing Program at BCYC. In the past, we have raised
money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) and
will be hosting events for LLS later in the year, such as the
Leukemia Cup. These proceeds will help keep our program
strong so that BCYC can serve as a learning environment for
future sailors. We are particularly excited about this year’s
event. With the largest junior board in club history, our
efforts have expanded, so we expect a fantastic evening.
The theme this year is space/science fiction and it will truly
be out of this world! Please feel free to dress accordingly, or
simply come prepared to enter a galaxy far, far away.
We invite everyone to join us on April 10 for the best Bingo
Night ever (at least in this galaxy). Enjoy a very cool event
and support the BCYC Junior Sailing Program.
A Note from our Chaplain . . .

Now is the time to start reviewing the vessel safety checklist in
anticipation of BCYC’s Opening Day event May 9 — the annual
Boat Maintenance Competition and Inspection. It’s easy to do and
you will have the satisfaction of a Bristol and safe boat with a
trophy or decal to prove it!
The competition is based on the Bristol condition of the boats
entered and is conducted by the Balboa Power Squadron. There
are two classes for point evaluation. Class 1 involves items
required by Coast Guard regulations, while Class 2 items are
necessary for the prudent operation of the vessel. Points are
awarded based on the following criteria:
Absent, not functioning or not easily accessible – 0
Functioning, but in poor condition – 1
Functioning, but in fair condition – 2 Functioning, and appears to be new – 3
The inspectors look for things like personal flotation devices,
navigation light operation, displaying the required CF number on
your dinghy and overall condition of the vessel. Sound easy? It is!
Available categories are: up to and including 34-feet; 35- through
45-feet; 46-feet and over; and electric boats

Spring Has
Sprung!
Calling all “Salty Dogs” to join us Saturday, April 18, for
our Annual Dog Show. This year, we are supporting the
Canine Companions for Independence. This organization
breeds Labrador and golden retrievers, and crosses of the
two, to become assistance dogs to serve the handicapped —
from war veterans to autistic children. Please come out and
support this event even if you don’t own a dog! It’s fun to
watch BCYC members and their furry friends.
Bowers Museum “The Mystery of Sanxingdui” was such a
wonderful exhibit, a fabulous Las Commodoras destination
in February!
Also, pictured here are the Marine wives we hosted in March
at our annual fashion show.
There are separate trophies in each of the first three categories for
both power and sail boats. Regardless of your boat’s size or type,
you can be a winner! Please contact me if you have any questions.
If you don’t want to compete, plan to sign up for the Coast Guard
inspection and earn your boat a safety decal. It is a courtesy
inspection and their findings are given only to the skipper of the
boat. Visit vesselsafetycheck.org for more details. The website not
only has an item-by-item description of the safety check, you can
also use Online Vessel Safety Check, an interactive program that
lets you determine if your boat would pass a safety check. This
same information is available in the front office.
The competition and inspection begin at 9 a.m. on Opening Day.
Find the sign-up sheet form by visiting bcyc.org. Bring your boat
to BCYC for the competition and Opening Day dock parties. The
club office will begin accepting dock reservations April 11 after
noon. Good luck!

Life Lessons
I have been a member of BCYC since 2001 and sailing for 12
years. From Starfish to varsity high school sailor, sailing has
taught me a number of things that have had a major impact on
my life. One is to always respect Mother Nature and her power.
Also, sailing has helped me be more patient and disciplined in
my everyday life. With the clock ticking away at three minutes
to the start of the race, I now patiently wait and manage my
time wisely to make sure my boat is prepared to begin the race.
Lastly, I have learned that no matter how bad the day is on the
water, it still will always beat any other day that I am not sailing.

Another
Season
Unsung Heroes
So far, it looks like we will have another year as good
as, or even better, than last year. Water temperatures
are already at 70 degrees mid-channel, and around
Catalina they are 71.3 degrees. If I remember correctly,
last year they were around 67 degrees at this time. Water
temperatures around Ensenada and points south are 72.4
degrees. There are already reports of yellowtail being
caught near the local offshore oil rigs.
I heard from a fellow member who sent me an article
– I won’t use his name, but he is a director, has a large
Bertram, and wanted to fish in a tournament in Costa
Rica. In the article it stated that the tourney contestants
released an average of 50 marlin per day on each boat.
That sounds hard to believe.
Since the lower-level renovation has eliminated the
fishing board, I will keep a record of the fish being caught
by our members. On each fishing trip, I would like you
to send me a picture of the biggest fish caught, its weight
and species, and whether you were fishing on a power or
sail boat – send to kipcyprus@aol.com. To help decide
the annual BCYC angler of the year award, you will get
one point per pound for your largest catch. Since it is
more difficult to work a fish off a sail boat, those fish will
be credited with two extra points. If you have any other
thoughts on this program, please let me know. Good luck
fishing.
Tis’ the season – yes I know the Holiday season has long
since passed, but you would not notice it by the activities
the club has hosted over the last two months. Starting with
the New Year’s Eve gala, then Super Bowl, followed by the
Women’s Sailing Convention, Valentine’s Day dinner and
Commodore’s Ball, all just through February. March saw a
successful four-day run of Showboat, the Las Commodoras
Fashion Show luncheon and, of course, Closing and
Opening Days just on the horizon. All the while, the club
is in the middle of a major renovation project and yet all
this seems to happen seamlessly. BCYC is blessed to have
an extremely energized, dedicated and passionate volunteer
force of members who unselfishly give of their time to make
sure we all enjoy these events and can tell our friends that
BCYC is not only the Friendliest Club on the Bay, but the
most active as well.
These in-house committees are working diligently to make
sure we all have the opportunity to enjoy the events that
make us the premier club we are today. If you have not
already done so, consider becoming part of the Membership,
House or Activities Committees as they are always looking
for additional help. I would also like to acknowledge our
staff, under the expert leadership of General Manager Scott
Jones, who have done such a magnificent job.
To all of you who serve and dedicate your time, thank you so
much for all your tireless efforts – you are truly our Unsung
Heroes.
What a catch!
It looks like Director Abbott Ayloush has
caught the first billfish of the year. I am not
sure if it counts when you are in Costa Rica.
Abbott’s catch took place during the second
leg of this year’s Los Sueños Signature Triple
Crown tournament, Feb. 25-28, and beat the
total releases from the same leg in 2014 by 629
billfish. Forty teams, comprising 161 anglers,
released a total of 1,688 billfish, including 21
marlin and 1,667 sailfish, in just three days of
fishing. Congratulations Abbott!
