For our first time ever, we will have our “$1000 Design Challenge”. The rules are simple. Take a photo, print a photo, or bring in a copy from a magazine, of a retail garment or accessory item that retails for over $1000. Be certain that the photo contains and visually shows the price of the item. Make that garment or accessory item. Bring the photo and your copy of the item in the photo and enter into our contest on Saturday at the Expo. All items must be entered in on Saturday by noon, voting will take place from noon until 5 pm and one winner will be announced at that evening’s Design Challenge. Winner will be the one item that is voted “Best” by the majority of voters. Winner will receive a NY Fabric buying trip (with Silhouette Patterns) PLUS $250. Cash. (Total Value of prize is $550.) Only one winner. Everyone can participate and all participants of ETA can vote one time. All entries will be displayed in the expo hall from noon until 5 pm on Saturday October 19, 2013. Please plan on attending and seeing what these women come up with. Specific location will be posted Saturday at the expo. There is no charge to attend and CHOCOLATES will be served. The Scenario: (Don’t miss seeing the results, Saturday, October 19th, 2013; 6-7 pm.) You are attending a high school reunion a little over three months from now. You are flying on a commercial airline to the reunion and only one carry-on bag allowed so all outfits must fit into the one carry-on bag. You will need three outfits and no one outfit can be repeated. These are the three events that you are going to attend. First day - Friday night get-together/mixer. Second day afternoon - “Memory Lane” photo shoot (must dress in the clothing style of the year you graduated.) Second evening - Big Outdoor Dance/Dinner The goal of this project is to have fun and see where your imagination can lead. Have fun and we are all anxious to see the results!! The patterns are the Designer’s choice and come from the above companies. Rules you must incorporate: 1. One item you make from the fabrics must be visibly worn at all three events 2. One item must be reversible. We all love to stay at the hotel. It is relaxing, comfortable, and we can visit longer with new friends. We have made a terrific effort to couple the hotel rooms with the conference, so you could just enjoy the weekend and treat yourself to a little get-a-way. 3. Some of all the fabrics must be used. 4. An additional $25 can be spent and will be reimbursed for anything purchased such as additional buttons, fabrics, etc. 5. All outfits must fit into the carry-on bag. 6. Patterns are free and unlimited from any one of the sponsors and ordered through the designer. Those patterns ordered must be used in the challenge. No other patterns may be used. 7. No additional fabric from personal stash allowed. Any notions may be used from your personal stash. Only an additional $25 can be spent on anything you need. Sewing Machines: If you are bringing a sewing machine, you may drop it off at the front of the hotel, then park, than go back to the bellman and he will help you get you and your machine to your classroom. If you are using your sewing machine for one or several days, you may check in your machine at the ETA California registration desk and we will keep it safely for you. Fitting Yourself, by Yourself - Saturday 2:30-3:30 pm You can do this yourself…fit yourself, by yourself…you do not need a group, you need the correct info and it is not out there in books…so come on in and sit on down and learn some correct information that will allow you to have more fun when sewing for your and learn to fit yourself, by yourself…and oh, bring a french curve!! 27. The Man Shirt Sunday - 2:30-3:30 pm What better way to say, “Thank you” or “I love you” than making your male friend his own shirt…he will love it, love you and wear it proudly. Yoga Pant variations… - Sunday 1-2 pm This Yoga pant thing is here to stay and so many great fabrics and so many great variations are being shown. Learn to remodel, update, or just make some new necklines. 30. New Ideas for Neckline and Sleeve Pattern Re-Drafting - Sunday 1-2 pm Like to learn how to lower or re-curve a neckline, V or square a neckline, yoke a neckline, empire a waist that fits, and many other types of re-drafting to your favorite tee. How about changing the sleeves by re-drafting, you can do this as well and I can show you how. Come with some changes you would like to make and we will try those as well. 31. Jacket UP, your style that is!!! - Saturday 4-5 pm Come learn some new ways to spice up your well-loved jackets, your newly purchased RTW jackets, or how about redesigning that old favorite jacket pattern that fits great but is starting to become boring. Correct Steps to take with Stay Tapes and Knits - Sat 2:30-3:30 pm All the little things you do while sewing with knits can add up to a very big difference in how professional the finished garment looks. Watch while Emma shows you and assortment of different knits and how to make stronger shoulder seams, straight side seams, non-warped hems on all types of knits/stretchy fabrics and a couple easy finishes for your necklines. 17 33. This class will begin with a discussion of Lettering as a design element. Instructions and demonstrations on using stamps, stencils, handwriting on cloth and calligraphy will be shown and students will be involved in practicing each techniques as it is being shown. Design Unique Fabrics with Paints - Sunday 10-noon Material Kit Fee: $15 (includes 3 ½ yard pieces of fabric, sponge brush, 2 paint brushes). Instructor will provide fabric paints, paint sticks, resists, beads, glitter and foils. This class will really unleash the box in all of us. First a discussion of fabric paints, resists and techniques and design with demonstration of all of these…and even if you don’t know what they are, you will love seeing it all in action, them jumping in and getting your hands involved. Next, a whole range of specialty paints, paint sticks will be shown how to use to create layers of design and again, students get to get involved, not just watch.
