The news of
Black Mountain
Presbyterian Church
May 10-23, 2015
s the weeks unfold and we move into summer here in the Valley, I am hoping to
get to know each and every one of you on a first name basis. You will quickly discover
that I am a people person. I do not want to lock myself in the church simply working
on sermons or in meetings. I want to be out and about and become acquainted with
the people and the community I have been called to serve.
I do not only want to get to know you, but I want you to know me. I want to share
with you who I am. Many of you have seen my bio, but let me share with you some
other tidbits concerning my life.
My three biggest loves in the ministry are preaching, member care and
congregational/staff development.
Please call me Mary Katherine, not Reverend or Pastor.
I am a bit odd in that I haven’t eaten bread or sweets or any processed sugars
in the last two years! My body feels so much better without them!
I was named for my two great grandmothers, who I knew as Mother Mary
(Mary Munroe) and Mamoo (Katherine Woodward).
I am not a big sports fan. I’d rather spend my energy somewhere else but I
love to cheer my children on in their sports and I will always cheer for the
Davidson Wildcats even though I don’t attend many games.
I so enjoy cooking for my family! If I have an evening meeting at the church,
you will not see me at the church late afternoon because I’ll be making dinner
at home. Family dinner time is sacred to me.
I absolutely love being a pastor; it is life affirming for me and I can’t imagine
doing anything else. I feel so honored to be called to be your pastor.
I look forward to our ministry in the following months. I look forward to laughing
together and crying together and worshipping together and playing together.

Infant Nursery Caregiver
We are looking for a loving, caring adult to fill
the position of Sunday Morning Infant Nursery
Caregiver. This is a paid position for the hours of
8:15-12:15 each Sunday morning. If you know
of anyone who may be interested in this please
have them contact, Alice Patton, 669-2725.
On a beautiful sunny Sunday
afternoon, May 3rd, fifteen of
our middle school youth and seven
of our youth advisors hand-washed
over 25 cars for our church members
at Highland Farms, BMPC Session
members, and youth advisors ... and
the church bus! We all had a great time
washing cars, celebrating a beautiful
spring day, and visiting together –
young and old – in the shade with
homemade cookies and lemonade.
We intentionally didn't accept any
donations at the car wash, as this
was a time for our youth to express
their appreciation to church members
for their continued support of youth
ministry, and for the ways that our
older church members have lived their
lives of faith with integrity and as a
Christ-like example.
Thank You, BMPC for taking your
baptism promises seriously and for helping
to nurture the faith of all our young people
by the ways you teach Sunday school, help
with Logos, share a smile or a high five
in the Narthex on Sundays, send notes
of encouragement, inquire about what
is happening in their lives, and PRAY for
our babies, children, and youth and their
families. We give thanks to God for YOU!
Thanks to Bess Perryman, Nan Higgins, Joe
& Betty Jo Walker, Bill & Dee Cox, for helping
to host the event in their cluster at HF ... and
letting us wash their cars, too.

Program
The final program of the 2014-15 PW
year will be held on Tuesday, May
12, at 4:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.
Sheila Ellington, Hospitality facilitator,
has planned a delicious dinner to be
catered by Gateway Eatery. The cost
for the dinner is $8 and the cut-off
date for signing up or cancelling is
noon on Thursday, May 7.
The Birthday Offering Program is
an opportunity to learn about and
support PW efforts in working
for justice and peace in the world.
The new officers for 2015-17
will be installed.
Another activity which is always
of interest is the awarding of the
Honorary Life Memberships.
Two hardworking and faithful
Presbyterian Women
will be recognized.
Please plan to join us
as we enjoy an afternoon
of fellowship.

Appreciation corner
In preparation for the Western NC Presbytery Presbyterian
Women Spring Gathering at BMPC on April 25, the PW
were reminded what a fabulous church staff and family with
which we are blessed. Sexton Spencer Kilgore arranged
tables and chairs in all available rooms to accommodate
165 for brunch and lunch, as well as cleaned up after the
event in preparation for Sunday worship. Director of
Communications Jackie Kerr typeset 100+ name tags for
our guests. Office Administrator Lisbet Chrisman, was
our "trouble shooter" and helped us to coordinate the day's
activities. The lovely table decorations were supplied by
Director of Pre-School Ministries Alice Patton and Mistie
Cogbill's Giraffe class. Pastor Mary Katherine Robinson
took time out of her busy schedule to participate in the
program. Wayne Mullis, Bill Cox, John Evans, and Gene
Schimpf gave up their Saturday morning and stood out
in the rain for a couple of hours to assist our guests with
parking. John Smith and Hugh Mayronne assisted in the
kitchen serving the food and beverages. Many people
working together as a team made this a successful event.
We know that we are a blessed church, and we are
delighted to share our many blessings with the
community. Many thanks to all the willing workers
who assisted the PW in countless ways!

Gary and Marlene Van Brocklin are PCUSA missionaries
serving in South Asia. Previous to going back to the
mission field based in Sri Lanka in 2014, Gary taught at
Montreat College and at one time Gary and Marlene
worshiped regularly at BMPC. They serve as Regional
Liaisons for South Asia: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh,
Nepal and Sri Lanka. You are invited to come and
enjoy an evening learning about their ministry and
work in South Asia. We will have pizza and salad from
Pepperoni’s; donations accepted to cover the meal.

ThankYou BMPC family
What a fabulous Christian family we have here at BMPC! Your
phone calls, food, cards, visits and prayers have been such an
encouragement to us during these past weeks as Dave has been
recovering from two heart attacks in mid-March. THANK YOU
seems so inadequate, but we say it from the bottom of our hearts.

Our family would like to take a moment to say “thank you so much”
for everything this congregation and pastors have done for Callie and
us the past 12 years, especially the past three that have been so, so
very difficult. It seems the trials in Seattle have paid off, Callie’s 3 in
1 (37th) surgery has created an airway and an even more beautiful
face. She is getting good care from a team that can handle her rare
craniofacial disorder, Pfeiffer syndrome. We are struggling to line
up everything to make her nine appointments and first sleep study
happen in Seattle on May 18, but even in our darkest moments, we
have to continue to believe that God will work everything out, for we
have seen him perform miracles through Callie over and over again.
To God, we are beyond thankful and blessed. To you, our deepest
gratitude and thanks always.

Congratulations on a job well done! Your Black Mountain
Community blood drive on April 9 was a success. Because of your
efforts, 34 pints of blood were collected, and are ready to help save
lives. We also registered two first-time donors! We are committed
to ensure that blood and blood products will be there when you or
someone you love needs them, but we cannot do it without the support
of blood drive sponsors like you.

Donations for Nepal
Please remember the people of Nepal in prayer following the
earthquake. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) works around the
globe to respond to natural disasters and is committed to the long-term
response. To make a donation to PDA you may write your check
to BMPC with Nepal on the memo line.
