In March, Owls made a welcome invasion into the village hall when Tony Hewitt of Owls to Behold introduced us to eight of these wonderful birds. All abandoned by pet owners, or rescued due to injury, they are unable to hunt so cannot be returned to the wild and are looked after by Tony at his Wellingborough home. We learned some fascinating owl facts and had the privilege of getting up close to them during Tony's one hour talk. 2015 is the WI Centenary Year and Marilyn Knibb won the ballot to be our guest at a Garden Party hosted by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall at Buckingham Palace. We look forward to hearing about her experience. In the mean time we enjoyed our own WI annual meal at Wildwood. Many thanks to Alison for her organisation, the chatter and laughter indicated a very successful evening. Our next talk, on 13 April, is given by Douglas Maddy an illusionist and is entitled ‘Altered Perceptions’, how mind control works. We hope to see you there. NOTICE BOARD Parish Council In 1915, Corporal Jeffrey Satchell of the Royal Field Artillery, son of Thomas Satchell of Park Hill Lodge, Braybrooke, was given 48 hours leave of absence to get married. On Tuesday 11th May the bells of Braybrooke Church rang out when he married 18 year old Ethel Taylor, daughter of the late John Haydon Taylor of Lodge Farm, Braybrooke. The groom was probably wearing the Distinguished Service Medal which he had recently been awarded and which, according to the the Harborough Advertiser, he was proudly wearing in the village. One of the bridesmaids, Jeffrey's sister, Lucy Ann, later married another Braybrooke soldier, Ernest Hardwick in the church the following year. Jeffrey had to return to his regiment on Thursday 13th May and later that year he was invalided home with trench foot, lumps and nervous shock which had taken away his voice, in other words, shell shock. That same year his brother-in-law, William Hayden Taylor, joined up aged only 17 and was wounded later in the war. Its unlikely Jeffrey returned to the front and by 1918 he is listed as being attached to the ASC Remounts, who were responsible for providing horses and mules for the war from depots in the UK. The Neighbourhood Watch Scheme aims to build a stronger, safer and better community thus reducing the risk of crime in the neighbourhood. The Gossip is printed every 2 months.
