Week beginning May 4th Issue 12 Student Council Steps in! A little while ago the students of year 7, 8 and 9 took part in a circle time activity. The aim was to find out what the students could do to make Bryn a litter-less school and to care for their local environment. We have analysed all the feedback and this is what was said. We need to raise awareness: litter can cause harm to animals and damage the environment. We need to be honest about dropping litter and Tell someone that you have encouraged someone else not to drop litter. Make it a positive topic of conversation. The Eco team have put posters on all the bins they can. This is already making a difference. Bins now stand out more and have an important message. The world is NOT our waste bin! The caretakers have removed the small bins from the tennis courts which were always full and difficult to empty. They have been replaced by 3 large bins. Mrs Zdzieblo will be organising litter picks, both inside and outside school, throughout the rest of the year. We need to take action and volunteer to join But not just litter picks! litter picks and the Eco team. Elderly people in the local community have asked us for help to care for their gardens that they cannot manage any more. We need volunteers who would be willing to help. We need to put up posters to encourage people We need prefects and staff to patrol, spot litter droppers and give detentions. Say well done afterwards and make them feel good about it. own up when we drop it. We want students to respect those who do pick up litter. to put litter into bins. someone drop litter, tell them, and encourage them to pick it up and put it in a bin. We need to take action by getting more bins, getting bins emptied more regularly and by rewarding positive action. This feedback was taken to the student council and this is their response: Creating litter police is not the answer. It is time for us as individuals to take responsibility to challenge litter droppers ourselves. It is our friends that are doing it. Most of the time it is not deliberate. It is easy to volunteer – If you want to join in all you have to do is give your name to Mrs Zdzieblo. She can be found in S2 in the science area every break time. Challenge friends who drop litter. Volunteer to take action. Improve our environment. The Student Council is making the week of May 11th VOLUNTEER WEEK 1. We just forget or are too absorbed in doing something else that we let it happen. During this week we will have a litter pick of the school sports ground every day. So it’s time we all became litter challengers. During the winter months, a very limited amount of life could be seen in the reserve because weather conditions make it hard for flowers to bloom. Now that the spring has finally come, this has given plants chance to grow and animals to come out of hibernation. Last week when the conservation club visited the nature reserve, it was full of the signs of spring. We found over 20 different species of flowering plants and 2 types of funghi. These photos show you the true beauty of our nature reserve. The Mole is definitely getting active as its mating season approaches. We found mole hills spreading out all around the reserve. All seven of our primary feeders have already attended their Oracy sessions at Bryn which saw them take part in a range of fun and exciting activities aimed at consolidating their speaking and listening skills and exploring topics that feed into the exciting new Year 7 LINKS scheme that commences in September. Gwauncelyn, Maesybryn and Gwaunmeisgyn have already attended their reading sessions and we look forward to welcoming the remaining primary schools in the coming weeks. The final Year 6 sessions will take place in the second half of the summer term and will focus on writing. The Literacy Transition Programme is an opportunity for our future pupils to gain valuable experience of the environment at Bryn Celynnog while developing relationships with teaching staff, and applying and stretching crucial skills. All tasks feed into the first ‘LINKS’ topic planned for Year 7, bridging the gap between primary and secondary and providing pupils with a solid basis from which to begin their study at Bryn Celynnog.
