Christian Academy of Louisville March 30, 2015 www.caschools.us/centurion-athletics CAL Lacrosse Tops Ballard Bruins 6-4 Friday night brought chilly temperatures and a visit from the Ballard Bruins to Christian Academy HS Boys varsity lacrosse team. Against Louisville area teams, the Centurions were undefeated this season in previous contests with the South Oldham Dragons and the Manual Rams. Track Teams Dominate Fern Creek The Lady Centurions thoroughly dominated a dual meet with Fern Creek, winning each of the 7 individual events and the 1 relay, in the abbreviated weekday meet. Senior Attackman, Joe Zeiser posted a hat trick, leading the scoring with four goals while Senior Attackman, Jonathan Lytle fired in two more. Holton Durenberger, Robert Donovan and Bryce Crawford all contributed to the scoring, each posting assists to Zeiser and Lytle. Centurion Defensemen and Midfielders worked well together to hold the Bruins to just 7 shots on goal in the first two quarters with CAL going into halftime up 3-0. Opportunities helped Ballard find the goal three of their four times in the second half drawing them into a tie late in the fourth period. Excellent transition and off-ball movement by the Centurions in the closing minutes lead to the game's final two goals and slammed the door on the visiting Bruins. The Centurions next home opponent will be the Collegiate Titans tomorrow evening, Tuesday March 31. Come out and support your Centurion lacrosse team! CAL 12 vs BALLARD 2 It was a very cold evening with snow flurries when CAL JV LAX took on Ballard JV LAX team. The game started at 7:27 PM and within the first 20 seconds CAL made the first goal! By half time it was pretty evident that Ballard was no match for the CAL JV Centurions with the score 12-2. The final score was 14-3 and always praise be to God no one was injured. Senior Callie Donaldson (triple jump), freshmen Morgan McIntire (1600 meter run) & Madalyn O'Dea (long jump) picked up individual event victories, then combined with Clara Lynch to take the win in the 4x400 relay. Veteran Maya Wright won the 200 and newcomer Juliana Sabbak won the 100 hurdles. The final team score was Christian Academy - 66, Fern Creek - 4. The boys team had a closer battle, but still came out on top, outscoring Fern Creek 53-43. The Centurions won the meet in the 'technique' events - taking individual wins in the 110 meter hurdles (Isaiah Ragland), shot put (Joel Shelton) and discus (Jed Clay). LOUISVILLE TRACK & FIELD PREMIER CLASSIC The Christian Academy track & field teams had great showings in terrible weather on Friday evening. The girls team placed 3rd out of 17 teams, while the boys team finished 4th of 16. With temperatures in the 30's and dropping and bitterly cold winds, the conditions were far from optimal, in the meet co-hosted by Assumption and Collegiate. But the Centurions didn't let the weather prevent them from having their best meet of the season. As has been the case all season, senior Lilli Popovich dominated the throws, handily winning both the shot put and discus. Isaiah Ragland showed his hurdle prowess, taking victory in the 110's and adding a 3rd in the 300. Milton Wright came out on top in the long jump and then added an 8th place in the 200 meter dash. Kenzie Stovall defended her high jump title from last year's meet, matching her season's best of 4' 6". Senior Michael Good showed extreme versatility, scoring for the Centurions in 4 different events - the 300 hurdles, triple jump and as a member of both the 4x800 & 4x400 relays. Similarly Clara Lynch, Madalyn O'Dea and Callie Donaldson contributed in 3 places, with all three being on both the 4x800 & 4x400 relays and then adding an individual event placing - Clara 5th in the mile, Madalyn 5th in the 400 and Callie 8th in the mile. Others scoring for the Centurions: Matthew Wine (high jump, 4x400), Joel Shelton (shot, disc), Jacob Miller (triple jump, 4x400), Jessica Bozell (triple jump, 4x400), Wes Wegert (110 hurdles), Jack Wegert (4x800) and Jared Johnson (400). Roberts also made official visits for field hockey to Centre College, Transylvania University and Roanoke College. “I chose Ohio Wesleyan because of its small class size, really great involvement in the community, and highly ranked sports teams with the opportunity to play field hockey. When I visited I also loved the team and coaches,” said Roberts. Former CAL head field hockey coach, Jeremy Nelson, coached Roberts for three of her four high school years and spoke of her tremendous work ethic. “It’s one thing to show up, but it’s another thing to put in the effort. Alexis always gave 100%. The work she put forth is a reflection of her faith. Our faith is what pushes us to work harder, and you can see that in Alexis. God has given her a wonderful talent and passion for this sport. I’m very excited to see her hard work paying off in getting to play at the college level,” said Nelson. “We are most thankful for the strong spiritual foundation that was built here at Christian Academy and with our church family. That strong foundation will serve her well as she heads off to college,” said Alexis’ mother and CAL Assistant AD, Jennifer Roberts. Alexis received the Academic All State award for three years and was selected for this year’s senior all-star game. She plans to major in exercise science or physical therapy and looks forward to playing for the Battling Bishops next fall. 6 LAST WEEK’S GAME SCORES Tuesday, March 24, 2015 CAL 1 Male 6 Saturday, March 28, 2015 CAL 1 Trinity 4 CAL 1 Trinity 0 CALATHLETICS@CENTURIONAD 7 CAL Men's Tennis team defeated Collegiate 4-1 on Monday. Loren Simpson struck out two Cougars in the first, while the Centurions batted around, scoring 9 runs on several walks and a single by Kayla Chapman, a double by Riley Sexton, a triple by Caroline Lefan, and an in-the-park homerun by Simpson. The second inning was no different, with two more strikeouts thrown by Simpson, and singles for Elizabeth Ashley, Catie Kearfott, and Sam Thompson, and a triple for Simpson. The final score was Bullitt Central 0 – CAL 15. Great game, ladies! 11 The boys continued to play as a team, with everyone having a role and contributing to two wins last week. On 3/23, they face Highland and pulled out a 7-2 victory. Jacob Dupps got the start on the mound and pitched three no hit, scoreless innings, giving up only one walk and striking out six batters. He was relieved on the mound by Todd Crenshaw and making their first appearance on the mound this year, Casey Brown and Greg Lile. The hot bat at the plate was Casey Brown who went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s and scored a run. The next day was a cold one and the team faced the first place team from Newburg. Austin Richardson started the game for CAL and pitched 2 scoreless innings before being relieved by Charles/Joel Jessie who pitched another 2 scoreless innings while striking out 5 of the 7 hitters he faced. Jacob Dupps got the scoring started with a hard hit single that scored 2 runs. The game on Saturday was postponed due to the cold temperatures and will be made up later in the season. The boys have a goal of getting to the Middle School City Tournament at U of L’s Jim Patterson Stadium and are committed to playing their role to help the team #gettoPatterson! This week the boys will get to play with the freshmen team at PRP on Monday at 6pm, Tuesday they face Crosby Middle at Skyview Park at 7:45, Thursday they have a 5:30 game at Lyndon vs. Noe Middle and they will finish the week on Friday dressing with the freshmen team to face Male High School at 5pm. Week #2 It was looking as if Noe was going to shut the Centurions out last Monday, until the 3rd inning. In the third inning, Trinity Ramey, Samantha Marshall, Macie Howes, Rachel Burrows, Isabelle Rubsch, and Peri Tapp were able to get on base and make it home to make the final score CAL 6 to Noe 12. Our second game of the week on Tuesday was against Olmsted. The Centurion pitcher, Samantha Marshall, started the 1st inning out strong and Olmsted got three consecutive outs allowing the Centurions to come to bat quickly and begin to score. Both the rain and Olmsted began to come back strong, but the Centurions hung onto their lead and won the game 5-1. There are two games before spring break. Mark your calendars and come out and cheer the girls on to a victory: Tuesday, March 31, 2015 (5:30pm at Valley Sports Field) and Thursday, April 2, 2015 (7:00pm at Lyndon Field). 12 The 5/6 grade CAL BLUE lacrosse team hosted the Anchorage Anchors at home on Tuesday. Dylan Schwartz and Christian Walker scored goals for the Centurions. The team fell short 2-7. Our next home game is Tuesday (3/31). CAL RED at 6:00pm.
